Intro Cum Thesis Rise of the Machines

“The Rise of the machines” is a familiar trope in Sci-Fi. “The Matrix” is one such masterpiece, it
portrays the narrative of “Artificial Intelligence (AI) taking over human” encapsulating the dangers of
it. As AI becomes more prevalent in our daily lives, the potential dangers of it are no longer just a
fantasy. While technology has revolutionized our society, there are some underlying threats that we
should be aware about.
Point 1 Job Automation and Disruption
You may ponder, when did AI start their takeover? Since always! Job displacement has been an issue
ever since 1980! Research conducted by Zippia shows that by 2030 about a quarter (45million)
Americans could potentially lose their job to AI automation. Technological advancement could lead to
people like yourself losing your job. Like the movie, the machines took over majority of jobs, leaving
humanity with little purpose of autonomy.

Point 3 Autonomous Weapons

AI has fulfilled its duty by rendering “aid” to us. However, it has no way of making moral and ethical
judgements. The concept of revolutionizing warfare using AI proved worrisome, as it could lead to
unintended consequences, such as the killing of innocent civilians.

Point 2 Bias and Discrimination

In the film, an AI hierarchy was established; evaluating the worth of individuals. AI system are trained
on biased data and therefore might make decisions that perpetuate and amplify discrimination
against certain groups of people. A study done by McKinsey showed that AI can embed human and
societal biases and deploy them at scale. By integrating AI into our lives, our decisions and policy
making may not be ethically right.

Conclusion
The benefits of AI are undeniable, but we must also be aware of the potential dangers. It is
important that we take steps to mitigate these risks, such as through regulations and oversight.
As we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with AI, we must also ensure that
we are taking the necessary precautions to keep ourselves and society safe.

It's not a cardinal sin to let AI to be AI, but a simple security measure around the AI will help
offset their potential risks. Plus, more AI applications with safety features is something none
of us could ever refuse.

"The Matrix" is a Sci-Fi masterpiece; it portrays the narrative of "Artificial Intelligence (AI)
taking over humans", encapsulating its dangers. As AI becomes more prevalent in our daily
lives, the potential dangers of it are no longer just a fantasy. While many praised technology
for revolutionizing the society, there are some underlying problems AI creates such as
unemployment, discrimination & autonomous weaponry.

When did AI start its takeover? Since always! One of the most significant concerns is job
displacement. “By 2030, it is said that about 45 million of Americans could potentially lose
their job to AI automation” (Chris Kolmar,2021). Technological advancement could lead to
you losing your job. Similarly in “The Matrix” the machines took over most jobs in the movie,
leaving humanity with little purpose and autonomy.

What’s worse? AI is capable of being prejudice against us. How you may ask? AI systems are
built upon data; therefore, it could embed human and societal biases contain within.
Eventually, “making decisions that perpetuate and amplify discrimination against certain
groups of people.” (James Manyika, 2019) <Insert another point>

If that wasn’t enough, the recent trend of automating weaponry prove to be worrisome.
Imagine putting a bias lifeless-being with no moral and ethical judgements behind lethal
machinery capable of eradicating humanity! Does “Terminator” ring a bell?

To AI or not to AI? While I do not discredit how AI has contributed to society. I urged you
readers to render and process the possible implications it brings. It's not a cardinal sin to let
AI to be AI, but a simple security measure around it will help offset the potential risks. Plus,
more AI applications with safety features is something none of us could ever refuse.
