Role Play (Lack of education/limited exposure)

Narrator: After successfully pulling off their biggest project in their company, a group of coworkers was told by their
boss to have their one week vacation to a place they’ve never been travelled before as a reward for their hardwork.
Worker 1: Boss, maybe, we can have some fun in Thailand.
Boss: Well, sorry to break it to you but we don’t have enough penny for that. Maybe, next time. Think of something
just within the country.
Worker 2: How about Bohol?
Worker 3: I’ve been there.
Worker 2: How about Baguio.
Worker 4: Well, Baguio is so overrated.
Boss: Well, I’m gonna take you to Sulu. They’ve got nice beaches and majestic landforms there.
Everyone: What?
Worker 1: A huge Moslem community is in there. You know, Moslems are so aggressive.
Worker 3: I concur. You know, MNLF, Abu Sayyaf.
Worker 4: Are you gonna get us killed, boss?
Boss: Of course not. I grew up there in a small town called Talipao. I’m a Tausug and I want you to immerse yourselves
in our culture and learn something from it.
Narrator: And that’s it. The plan is final and unalterable. Though, deep down, the three have hesitations, but at the
same time, they don’t want to make their boss feel bad. At the Zamboanga Intenational Airport check-in line…
Stranger: Hey, man. Where are you from?
Worker 1: We’re from Davao.
Stranger: Where are you heading?
Worker 2: We’re going to Sulu for vacation.
Stranger: Terrible idea.
Worker 3: What did you just say?
Stranger: That’s a terrible idea.
Worker 4: Have you been there?
Stranger: Nope. But are you going to have yourselves back at home in pieces? No hands, no feet and beheaded?
Boss: I’m sorry? That’s enough guys. This man knows nothing.
Narrator: The four went terrified to what they have just heard. And after 16 hours of travel, on the plane from Davao to
Zamboanga and on ship from Zamboanga to Sulu, they arrived to their destination. At the beach….
Worker 3: Wohooo! The water is so clear.
Boss: Yes, it is. Sulu really has taken care of their nature well enough. By the way, I’m visiting my old friend tonight.
Do you want to come with me or just stay here at the beach?
Worker 2: Well, I think we’re good here, boss. We just wanted to seize the moment here.
Boss: Fair enough.
Worker 1: Well. You heard that? Boss is going to meet her old friend tonight and she’s gonna leave us all here. We’re
gonna buy buckets of beer and I’m gonna hit some beautiful Tausug women.
Worker 2. That’s a nice idea.
Worker 4: Men will always be men.
Worker 3: But we can flirt with some Tausug boys, too. Right, Anna?
Narrator: At that night, all of them were greatly influenced by liquor and a Tausug guy approaches them.
Tausug Guy: Hey, excuse me for a while. We are about to have our prayer right at that masjid. And I beg you to
minimize your voices, sir.
Worker 2: I beg your pardon?
Tausug Guy: To minimize your voices, sir. We will be having our prayer in few minutes.
(Worker 2 push the Tausug guy. They fight)
Tausug Woman: Hey. hey. hey. What’s happening here? Why there were so much bottles of liquor here?
Worker 1: Hey, beautiful.
(Tausug woman slapped the man)
Tausug Woman: You, jerked.
(The boss sprinted towards the tumult.)
Boss: What is going on?
Tausug Woman: Do you know them, Rashid?
Boss: Yes, they are my employees.
Tausug Man: I told them to minimize their voice but they instantly went over me and push me.
Tausug Woman: And that guy is a jaskass.
Boss: Is that true?
(The four denied)
Tausug man: I mean, they are drunk. What can you expect them?
Tausug woman: You should have guided them, Rashid. It’s your fault. They are your people. You should have told
them how to act, what to do, and what not to do.
Boss: I’m sorry, Sitti.
Tausug man: We can let you have fun. We can let you have a drink. But please, if we beg respect for a moment, give
it to us.
Boss: My apologies, Abdul.
Tausug Man: It’s alright Papong.
Boss: Guys, I want you to apologize to them.
Workers: We’re very sorry.
Tausug woman: I hope you guys learned a lesson. Be at least be knowledgeable to some’s cultures and practices
and more importantly show respect.
Tausug guy: Respect doesn’t cost you anything.
Them: You’re right
Narrator: And they shook hands and the Tausugs accepted their apology. A week went by and they headed back to
Davao with a lesson instilled in their mind that it is very important to have a knowledge regarding one’s culture. To
always possess sensitivity and respect. Otherwise, this can affect communication and interaction negatively.
