Module 1 Lesson 1: Introduction to Wireless Networking

Objective:

• Describe the development and types of wireless network

Audio Script 1:

Welcome to Wireless Networking Course. The objective of this lesson is to describe the development
and types of wireless network.

So, in this video, you will learn about:

• Definition of wireless network

• Origins of wireless network

• Key terminologies of wireless network

• Types of wireless network

• Benefits of wireless network

By the end of this video, you will be able to describe the development and types of wireless networking
technologies.

Audio Script2:

So, what is a wireless network?

According to CISCO, wireless network is a local-area network that uses radio waves to connect devices
such as computers and mobile phones to the internet and to your business network and its applications.

Audio Script3:

What is the origin of wireless network?

• In the 1970s, the University of Hawaii conducted a research project by the name of Additive
Links Online Hawaii Area net (ALOHAnet).

o ALOHAnet research project set the foundation for the wireless networking services we
enjoy today.

• All wireless communications — including mobile, satellite, cellular, and WiFi utilize the ALOHA
protocol to establish an initial link.

Audio Script4:

What are the key terminologies for wireless network?

The key terminologies for wireless network that we will discuss in this course include:

• Radio wave

• PAN

• LAN

• MAN

• WAN

• Wi-Fi

• WAP

Audio Script5:

What is a radio wave?

• According to NASA, a radio wave is a series of repeating peaks and valleys.

Audio Script6:

How is radio wave generated?

The radio wave is generated by a transmitter such as antenna and then detected by a receiver. For
example, an antenna sends radio waves into a space. Then a receiver picks up the radio waves from
space. Transmitters and receivers are typically designed to operate over a limited range of frequencies.

Audio Script7:

What are the types of wireless network?

There are four types of wireless networks:

1. Personal area network (PAN).

2. Local area network (LAN)

3. Metropolitan area network (MAN)

4. Wide area network (WAN)

Audio Script8:

So, what is personal area network (PAN)?

Personal area network provides internet access to a very limited area — typically about 100 meters for
most applications using protocols like Bluetooth and Zigbee.

Audio Script9:

What is local area network (LAN)?

Local area network provides an internet access to an area like an office building or a house.

Audio Script10:

What is metropolitan area network (MAN)?

Metropolitan area network provides internet access to wider areas such as a city.

Audio Script11:

What is wide area network (WAN)?

Wide area network provides internet access to an area outside the range of the LAN and MAN. WAN
uses cellular technology to enable users to make phone calls to others connecting either through a
wireless WAN or a wired telephone system.

Audio Script12:

What is wireless fidelity (Wi-fi)?

Wireless fidelity (Wi-fi) is a radio frequency signal that is used to connect computers, smartphones, and
other devices to the internet.

Audio Script13:

What is wireless access point (WAP)?

Wireless access point (WAP) is a device that allows wireless devices connect to the wireless network.

Audio Script14:

What is a router?

According to CISCO, a router is a device that receives and sends data on computer networks. Routers are
sometimes confused with network hubs, modems, or network switches. However, routers can combine
the functions of these components, and connect with these devices, to improve Internet access or help
create business networks.

Audio Script15:

What is the difference between WAP and a router?

• A router acts as a hub to connect a local area network and manage communications among
devices.

• Wireless access point on the other hand, is a sub-device that provides another location for more
devices to connect on the network.

Audio Script16:

What are the benefits of wireless network?

There are four major benefits of wireless network:

1. Mobility and collaboration. This means you are able to stay connected while you are moving
around within the network area.

2. Accessibility. This means it expands access and enables people to stay connected.

3. Expandability. This means it allows you to provide access to other users without running cables
and wires.

4. Guest access. This means, it allows you to offer guest access network while keeping your
network resources protected. For example, businesses provide guest access of internet to their
customers.
