Context and Rationale

To live life to the fullest, one must be well. When a person lives a healthy

lifestyle, the body stays in good shape the mind is sharp and alert. A healthy

lifestyle would lifespan and also repair the body and mind. Human happiness

depends fundamentally on having excellent health.

By enhancing physical, mental, emotional, and social health through

increased knowledge and influencing attitude towards caring for one’s well-being,

health education empowers people and enables communities to live healthier

lifestyles.

According to DepEd Memorandum no. 023 s. 2020, sates that the

Department of Education (DepEd), through the Bureau of Learner Support

Service-School Health Division (BLSS-SHD), maintains it commitment to provide

good nutrition to learner’s midst the Covid-19 pandemic. As such, it shall

continue the implementation of the School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP) for

school year 2020-2021 to address hunger and encourage learners to enroll

contribute to the improvement of their nutritional status, provide nourishment for

their growth and development and help boost their immune system and enhance

and improve their health and nutrition values. To realize this objective this study

is a way to alleviate malnourished Filipino.

According to World Health Organization a vital component of health and

development is nutrition. Stronger immune system and longer lifespans are all

associated with better nutrition. Children who are healthy learn more. Malnutrition

poses serious risks of human health in all of its manifestations. The double
2

burden of malnutrition that exists today, particularly in low- and middle-income

nations, involves both undernutrition and overweight malnutrition can take many

different forms such as undernutrition (wasting or stunting). Insufficient vitamins

or minerals, overweight, obesity and the ensuing non-communicable diseases

linked to diet. The global burden of malnutrition has substantial and long-lasting

effects on individuals, their families, communities, and nations in terms of

development, economy, social issues, and health.

According to UNICEF Philippines, every 95 children in the Philippines die

from malnutrition. Twenty-seven out of 1,000 Filipino children do not yet past

their fifth birthday. A third of Filipino children are stunted, or short for their age.

Stunting after 2 years of age can be permanent, irreversible, and even fatal. The

Philippines issue with child malnutrition and stunting. With a prevalence of 33%,

stunting in the Philippines is mostly result of unequal access to nourishing food,

prolonged hunger, and inadequate nutrition in the first 1,000 days of life.

The San Jose Elementary School, Libon Albay is an Elementary School that

produces professionals in town. But since pupils vary in their nutritional status

there are pupils that were found to be malnourish. Selected pupils of San Jose

Elementary School were the respondents of the study. That’s why the

researchers get the weight of the pupils to determine whether the problem exist.

So as the information gathered by the researchers, the intervention feeding

program will be developed to alleviate malnourished pupils.

3

Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

To alleviate the malnourished pupils of San Jose Elementary School, the

researchers will conduct a feeding program. The intervention is design to benefit

and contribute to the pupil’s nutritional status

The feeding program seeks to offer pupils in educational facilities

additional help through meal program. Through intensive nutrition and health

education, it also strives to improve the knowledge, attitude and behaviors of

parents and pupils enrolled in school. In a similar way, it aims to enhance and

maintain the nutritional status of all target pupils. Its ultimate objectives are to

improve food security enhance population nutrition and thus raise Filipinos

quality of life.

The researchers will get the height, weight and age of the pupils of San

Jose Elementary School that will serve a basis for the data needed for the

malnourished pupils to be selected. Followed by conducting the feeding program.

The researchers will also get the height, weight and age of the pupils after the

intervention was administered to assessed if the intervention as effective.

The goal of this study is to measure the efficient of Feeding Program in

Alleviating the Malnourished Pupils. The intervention of the researchers is

conducting a feeding program for four (4) sessions. The following are the

suggested menu for each session:

1st session: Guto with Egg and Bread

2nd session: Champorado and Bread

4

3rd session: Pansit and Sinapot/Turon

4th Macaroni session: Soup and Bread

To execute this feeding program, the researchers will solicit fund. The

intervention is unique from other intervention because it will be accomplished and

perform by the researchers.

Action Research Questions

Specifically, this study seeks answer the following question.

1. What is the nutritional status of the pupils of before the intervention?

2. How effective is the implementation of feeding program in Alleviating the

Malnourished Pupils?

3. What other intervention can be proposed in Alleviating the Malnourished

Pupils?

Action Research Methods

In order to perform the study on the respondents, this study will use an

experimental research design that make use of pre-experimental design.

Since only one set of respondents will be use in the study, it is determined

that this form of research design is adequate. Data will be gathered both before

and after the intervention is given out.

A. Participation and/or other Sources of Data and Information

The study will make use of purposive sampling. Only those who

required it were considered in the study because it aimed to help the

malnourished pupils of San Jose Elementary School. Utilizing the

necessary number of respondents based on the requirements of the

study.

The weight, height, and age of the San Jose Elementary School

pupils in San Jose Libon Albay will serve as the main sources of data and

information for the current study, which will include a total of 20

respondents.

The information necessary to support the problems stated in this

study will be gathered using the following tools.

1. Feeding Program

Feeding program will be used to alleviate the malnourished

pupils of San Jose Elementary School. This refers to the strategy

innovated by the researchers. It will be conducted for four (4)

sessions.

The following will be the menu for each session:

1st session: Guto with Egg and Bread

2nd session: Champorado and Bread

3rd session: Pansit and Sinapot/Turon

4th session: Macaroni Soup and Bread

2. The weight, height, and age of the respondents.

This will serve as a basis of data needed to select the

malnourished pupils and will be used to compare the result after the

intervention will be administered.

B. Data Gathering Methods

The researcher will take action once the research instrument has

been completed. To obtain the information required to support the posed

action research issues, the stages below will be observed.

The selection of malnourished pupils at San Jose

Elementary School will be based on pupils’ weight, height, and age. Data

on the malnourished pupil’s height, weight and ages will be collected

before and after the intervention, and both sets of data will be used to

determine whether the intervention was effective or not. The feeding

program will then be implemented. The results will be evaluated

depending on the research problem, and the output will be the research

problem and the output will be interpreted after the data has been

statistically summarized. This form of sample design will be used in this

study by the researchers since there were twenty (20) malnourished pupils

who were required for the study.

8

C. Data Analysis

The statistical tool that will be used were the following:

Difference Level: This will be used to determine if there is a difference

between the weight, height of the respondents before and after the

intervention.

The formula is:

DL= D2 – D1

where DL= Difference Level

D2= Data after the Intervention

D1= Data before the Intervention

Likert Scale. This tool will be used to determine the Effectiveness of

Feeding Program in Alleviating the Malnourished Pupils of San Jose

Elementary School.
