TIPS ON HOW TO LISTEN WELL
TO A POEM:
❖ Do an initial reading of the poem.

❖ Think of the experience as if you are listening to a
simple story being told instead of a complex piece of
art.
❖ Imagine that the voice of the persona come to life as if
the persona is personally conversing with you.
ALLUSION
Is an indirect reference to a popular
place, thing, or person with which the
reader is presumably familiar.

“Wow, Einstein… Thanks for the tip.”


“Cupid’s arrows only work if you have a heart.”
“That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles and my
daddy said ‘Stay away from Juliet‘…”
SYNECDOCHE
Is using a part to represent a whole
or a whole to represent a part.

“He’s the brains of the operation”

“You have my whole heart.”

“I need a headcount by morning,”

“Give us this day our daily bread.”


MYTONOMY
Is substituting a word or phrase for
something that is closely associated with
it.

“Joe’s new ride was expensive.”


“When I came to visit, my friend offered me a cup.”

“While I’m sleeping, my dog tries to steal the covers.”

“Today at lunch, I sat with the jocks.”
