MEI Core 3 Functions

Section 1: The language of functions

Exercise
1. For each of the mappings below:
(i) Describe the mapping as either; one-to-one, many-to-one, one-to-many or
many-to-many.
(ii) State whether the mapping is a function or not.
(iii) State whether the co-domain and range are equal.

(a) (b)

(c) (d)

2. Find the range of each of the following functions.

(i) f(x) = 1 – 3x where x > 0
(ii) f(x) = x 2
where x 
1
(iii) f(x) = where  1  x  1
1  x2

3. The function d is defined as: d(n) = the number of factors of n, where n  .

E.g. d(25) = 3 since 25 has 3 factors: 1, 5 and 25.
(i) Find (a) d(6) (b) d(5) (c) d(16) (d) d(13)
(ii) Describe the set of numbers for which d(n) = 2
(iii) Describe the set of numbers for which d(n) is an odd number.

4. The function f is defined as:

1
f: x → .
x 1
(i) What value of x must be excluded from the domain of this function?
(ii) Find (a) f(2) (b) f( 3) (c) f(0)
(iii) For what value of x is f(x) = 2?

5. The diagram below shows the graph of a function f(x).
The graph passes through the origin and has a turning point at (1, 2).

Sketch the following graphs, giving the coordinates of the turning point in each
case.
(i) y = f(x + 2)
(ii) y = f(3x)
(iii) y = f(x – 1) + 2
(iv) y = f( x)
(v) y = 2f(x)
(vi) y = f( 12 x  1)

6. The graph y  x 2 undergoes the following transformations. Find the equation of

the new graph in the form y  ax 2  bx  c in each case (starting with y  x 2 in
each part).
3
(i) Translation through  
 1 
(ii) Stretch parallel to the x-axis, scale factor 12
(iii) Reflection in the y-axis
(iv) Stretch parallel to the y-axis, scale factor 3
 2 
(v) Translation through   followed by reflection in the x-axis
 0
(vi) Stretch parallel to the y-axis, scale factor 2, followed by translation through
1
  , followed by reflection in the y-axis.
 2

7. Explain how you could use transformations to obtain each of the following graphs
from the graph of y = sin x.
(i) y = 1 + sin(x + 30°)
(ii) y = – 3sin 12 x
