Historically, the Chitpur Road, thriving with
traditional craft-oriented commercial activities
and connecting the northern part to the south-
ern part of Kolkata, flourished as the most im-
portant backbone since the early growth of the
city. The urban pattern developed at Chitpur
over the centuries is very organic with its narrow
and irregular street layout, very large palatial
and contrasting small buildings, and courtyards,
either isolated in a large plot or attached on two
