11-ABM

Activity 1. Strength of IMFA and Physical Properties of Covalent Compounds for each pair of
molecules, identify the one with the higher boiling point (BP), melting point (MP), viscosity (V),
surface tension (ST) and vapor pressure (VP). Briefly explain your choice.
BP M V ST VP
P
CCL4 – It is a polar CH4
molecule with a
dipole-dipole IMFA
type that is stronger
than London forces.

H2O – It is a polar H2S

molecule with a H-
bonding IMFA type
which is stronger
than dipole-dipole.

CH3OH – Methanol CH3CH2OH

and ethanol both
exhibit H-bonding,
although methanol
has a smaller molar
mass than ethanol.

CH3OCH3 – CH3COOH
Although both
molecules exhibit H-
bonding, acetone has
a smaller molar
mass than acetic
acid.
