Planning and Scheduling (PERT-CPM)

PA – 4 (Homework)

1. A project manager is usually assigned the responsibility of either managing a single large
project or many small projects at a time. Describe the different approaches to planning
and scheduling that must be used by these two types of project managers.

The method used to create the project schedule will differ depending on the project's size,
complexity, duration, staff, owner needs, and other factors. The project manager must select a
scheduling strategy that is easy to use and understand by all project participants. Two primary
approaches are often used: the Gantt chart (also known as the Bar chart) and the Critical Path
Method (sometimes called CPM or network analysis system).

A Gantt Chart is a project management tool that helps with project planning and
scheduling; it helps simplify complicated tasks. Timelines and tasks from project management
are translated into a horizontal bar chart, displaying start and finish dates, dependencies,
scheduling, and deadlines, how much of the job is accomplished at each stage and who is the
task owner. When the scope changes, this is important for keeping tasks on track when there
is a big team and various stakeholders. Because it is in bar chart style, it is easy to see progress
at a glance.

The Critical Path Approach/Network Analysis System (CPM or NAS) method is


widely utilized in the engineering and construction industries. The CPM provides
interrelationships of activities and scheduling of costs and resources. It is also helpful for
overall project planning and detailed construction planning. It does, however, have significant
limits when applied to complex engineering design work in the early phases of a project since
it necessitates a precise description of the interrelationships of activities.
