Plastic by Any Other Name

The other day, I was reading the catalogue of a certain cosmetic company, when I was struck by the abundant use of the word faux. There was faux everything and I realized how our whole reality is being filled with faux items and we are getting used to it, to the point where we dont question its presence in our lives. Now, faux is surely a trendy and somewhat elegant word that can hold its own with all those others that represent some much-used new language these days. But let me point this out to all of us, including me, who are getting complacent: Faux is French for Fake and False!!!

What a buy!!

Whats wrong with reality, that we turn to things we can deceive ourselves with. Just call it what it is: plastic, vinyl, glass, whatever here are some examples that are already mainstream: Faux leather Faux diamonds and other gems (if were lucky theyre at least still glass) Faux gold and silver (base-metals with the right colour) Faux silk (rayon or polyester) Faux flavours (like jello or soft drinks, etc.) Faux whipping cream and ice cream (just go to Mc) Faux butter (one molecule away from plastic) Faux sugar Faux flowers Faux youthful appearance (Including body-enhancing treatments like botox where tox stands for toxin) Manipulated voices on recordings, as well as images like photos and ads

Im sure the list is much longer, and a great deal of it is fabricated from plastic or some of its components. So what are we teaching our kids? That we can design a better world than the one we have? Well, faux ocean breeze scents have never done it for me. I like the fishy, salty smell: and I like things that are really sour or some that I have to chew. Whats wrong with having to work for something real rather than accept it in plastic so that its available right away? Whats wrong with the age we are, because we might as well admit theres no getting away from it. Why are we covering up the truth? There is beauty in imperfection as we see it, there can be triumph in adversity and pride in changing ones attitude and seeing things the way they are without judgement. How boring to have things sugar-coated, completely missing the excitement of something different. I for one, want the real diamonds (and butter and cream )
