One Too Many Crickets

Despite the repeated theme, movies about ferocious, deadly and terrifying insects and wild
creatures are still the vogue; nothing like scaring your socks off to provide a delightful eve-
ning’s entertainment. However, a real experience I had with a scorpion is worth recounting.
All scorpions have long bodies with five-segmented tails that can be arched over the back.
The tail ends in a bulb-like poison gland or stinger. Scorpions have four pair of legs with
two large pincer-bearing arms in front. Between the last pair of legs is a comb-like structure
to identify surface texture and detect prey. Scorpions are arachnids, as are spiders.
A scorpion has two eyes on the top of its head and usually 2 to 5 pair of eyes along the front
corners of the head. They do not see well, however, and must rely of sense of touch. They
are well-designed killing machines. Not much stops them.
Several years ago I knew someone who kept a large green scorpion in an aquarium as an
unusual pet. The colour was a brilliant emerald green, metallic and iridescent like an ancient
scarab. It looked to me to be about the shape of a Maserati and had the construction of a
tank. Formidable and indestructible, it was about 4” long. It feasted on crickets but they had
to be live prey. The aquarium was constantly jittering with little black crickets that would
disappear one by one leaving only a scrap of leg behind as evidence of the carnage. Relent-
lessly they were picked off day by day. The crickets knew they were trapped with an over-
whelming enemy but had no escape. Inexorably they were hunted down and chewed up.
Great January They clearly knew they were doomed. The crickets were tiny and vulnerable; the scorpion
Films!! was huge and covered with shimmering, thick green armour. No contest.
Crickets don’t top my list of admirable or clever species. Generally, I consider them to be
21 - Piranha 3D pretty mindless. However, something interesting happened when one too many crickets was
accidently introduced to the scene. They began to organize and construct a battle plan.
28 - Machete There’s no other way I can describe it. They mutually decided to form a counter attack in
order to survive. By all rights this was a suicide mission given the capacity of their enemy

« pg. 1 One Too Many Crickets

They grouped together to distract and

confuse the scorpion. While he was try-
ing to kill one of them others leaped at
his head and began to take out his eyes. It
took multiple efforts over many hours
but when they had blinded him they
moved in to pierce and amputate his leg
joints one by one. The guerrilla warfare
lasted days as the crickets slowly but
relentlessly crippled the gigantic scor-
pion. Some crickets were lost in the me-
lee and some were damaged. But they
kept regrouping and coming back.
After three days the scorpion was incapa-
ble of movement and the surviving crick-
ets moved in for the final coup de grace.
Together they had accomplished the
seemingly impossible defeat of a techni-
cally overwhelming adversary.
It served as a big lesson. No enemy is so
big that it cannot be brought to terms
eventually through persistent determina-
tion. Given enough time an error or over-
sight will occur. This will be the greatest
of opportunities and must not be missed.
And, remember even crickets can rise to
the occasion when in desperate peril.
When their campaign was over the crick-
ets disbursed around the glass tank and
went back to being the little dolts they
had always been. But, for a few days
they were courageous and heroic and
masters of their universe. JK
