Activity 1 – Identifying Contributions

Scientists Contributions
1. JAMES CLERK MAXWELL He was the one who formulated a theory that an
oscillating electric current should be capable of
radiating energy in a form of electromagnetic
waves.
2. HEINRICH RUDOLF HERTZ A German physicist who first conclusively proved
the existence of electromagnetic waves and
showed experimental evidence of
electromagnetic waves and their link to light.
3. ANDRE-MARIE AMPERE Ampere is considered as Father of
Electromagnetism and he was the one who
demonstrated the magnetic effect based on the
direction of current.
4. MICHAEL FARADAY An English scientist who contributed to the study
of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. He
formulated the principle behind electromagnetic
induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis.
5. HANS CHRISTIAN OERSTED He was a Danish physicist and chemist who
discovered that electric currents create magnetic
fields. He also showed how a current carrying
wire behaves like a magnet. Oersted’s law and
the Oersted unit are named after him.
Guide Question:
Q1. (Answers may vary) The electromagnetic wave theory was developed through the different
principles and contributions presented by several scientists.

Activity 2 – Types of EM Waves

Direction: Identify the type of EM wave being described by each of the following statements in Column
A by rearranging the letters found in Column B. Write your answers in Column C.

Column A Column B Column C

1. They come just after the
ultraviolet rays. They are of ________________
shorter wavelength but carries

higher energy than the UV.
2. They have smaller
wavelengths than radio waves.
They are used in satellite ________________

3. They lie at the other end of
the electromagnetic spectrum.
They are shortest in wavelength

energy; thus, they are more
dangerous. These are emitted
by stars and some radioactive
substances.

spectrum. It has shorter ALVIRTOLUET
wavelength than the visible
light and carry more energy.

KEY TO CORRECTIONS
Assessment – Let’s Test Your Knowledge
1. C - UV radiation is in the middle of the spectrum and has more energy than
visible light. It is mainly the reason why it carries more energy in electromagnetic waves
compared to microwaves, radio waves and visible light.
2. B - Electromagnetic waves are measured using frequency
3. D - Gamma rays pack the most energy of any wave and are produced by the
hottest, most energetic objects in the universe.
4. B - Radio waves and microwaves lie at the longer end of the spectrum of
electromagnetic energy (kilometers and meters to centimeters and millimeters) while x
rays, gamma rays, infrared and ultraviolet rays have very short wavelengths.
5. D - Visible light waves are the only electromagnetic waves we can see. We
see these waves as the colors of the rainbow. Each has a different wavelength.
6. C - Their difference lies in wavelength: infrared at the long extreme
ultraviolet at the short extreme. After that as frequency changes, nature of waves also
changes.
7. C - A remote control uses light waves beyond the visible spectrum of light –
infrared rays, to change channels on your TV.
8. B - Doubling the frequency of a wave source (without altering the medium)
doubles the speed of the waves.
9. D - Electromagnetic waves can travel through a vacuum, that is an empty
space, whereas mechanical waves cannot. They need a medium to travel such as water
or air.
10. D - Gamma rays have the highest energies, the shortest wavelength, and the
highest frequencies.
