The novel “The Scarlet Letter” is written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and it is

considered one of the classics of American modern literature. It portrays the life of
a woman named Hester Prynne, who borne a child out of wedlock. For this reason,
she is looked down upon by the judgemental 17th century people around her, and
is made to wear a scarlet letter A for her “sins”, only able to gain the town’s
respect after a period of seven years. She is not the only character having to live in
guilt, however, as the father of her new-born child, Arthur Dimmesdale, a minister
loved by pretty much everybody, later became sick due to the ever-increasing
feeling of guilt and shame. His pain did not stop there, as he was constantly
tortured by Roger Chillingworth, Hester’s “late” husband, who was introduced into
Hester’s life as the local doctor. An outstanding detail is when Arthur ask Hester
and Pearl, their daughter, to stand on the town scaffold with him. This detail also
represents keeping your head up. Some days after that, Arthur admitted to be
Pearl’s father in front of the town, then passed away right after uncovering a detail
on his chest.
