LESSON 1 ART HISTORY

What is art history?

Art history is the study of objects of art considered within their time period. Art historians
analyze visual arts’ meaning (painting, sculpture, architecture) at the time they were created.

1| MODULE 1: ART APPRECIATION

Art history doesn’t consist in simply listing all the art movements and placing them on a
timeline. It is the study of objects of art considered within their time period. Art historians
analyze visual arts’ meaning (painting, sculpture, architecture) at the time they were created.
Also, another of art history’s mission is to establishes authorial origins of artworks, i.e.
discovering who created a particular artwork, when, when and for what reason.

Iconography is a major part of art history. It consists in analyzing the symbolism of works of
arts. For instance, art historians identify the visual elements of a painting and interpret its
meaning. Art historians are interested in what the works of art represented at the time they were
created. It is a way to learn about the civilizations of the past.

LESSON 2 ART APPRECIATION

What is art appreciation?

The term art appreciation is referred to the knowledge of the general and everlasting qualities
that classify all great art. It is seen used to refer to the exploration of visual art forms or the
introduction of basic principles of visual literacy. It refers to analyzing the form of an artwork to
general audiences to enhance their enjoyment of such works of art. It may be analyzed without
reference to subject matter, symbolism or historical context. Art appreciation can be subjective
depending on personal preference to aesthetics and form, or it can be based on several elements
and principle of design and also depends on social and cultural acceptance. Most of the modern
art critics and art historians draw back from this term, underrating art appreciation as demanding
too little serious thought.

LESSON 3 ART, CREATIVITY, IMAGINATION AND EXPRESSION

Why do people create works of art?

''Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,'' said the famous Spanish painter Pablo
Picasso.
Art is an important part of being human. Not only we have the ability to create tools and modify
our surroundings, but we also have the curiosity for making objects look beautiful. There are
many possible reasons and explanations as to why humans make art and it would probably take
years to identify each one of them, but let's explore some of the most likely reasons that humans
create art.
Some of the main reasons for creating art include:
Making our surroundings more beautiful. Creating objects to decorate our surroundings has
motivated the creation of many types of art, such as architecture, painting, sculpture, jewelry,
design objects for every day use, and many others.
Creating records of a specific time, place, person or object is also a major motivation for art.
Paintings of individuals, battle scenes, or even those artistic wedding photographs could be
considered art made for the purpose of recording something specific.
Expressing and communicating ideas also moves the creation of art, including expressing
religious beliefs, artwork for criticizing elements of society, for educating people, even for
showing that we are capable of doing something no one else has tried before.
There are countless other reasons for the creation of art. But art has been important for mankind
since the early dawn of civilization. Our ancestors started to create art at least 30,000 years ago.
Among the oldest known examples of art are the prehistoric paintings on the walls of caves in
Europe and Asia, depicting human and animal figures and small items for decorating the body.
Since those days, art and mankind have evolved together.

2| MODULE 1: ART APPRECIATION

What is creativity?

Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities

that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves
and others.

Why creativity is necessary in art making?

Creativity is necessary to study because it is a vital part of the human experience and
encapsulates the highest level of human performance. The research of creativity provides cues
for people to become better problem solvers and to think outside the box to promote ingenuity.
Creative thinkers invent, innovate, educate, problem solve, inquire, and explore.

When can you say that a person is creative?

Creativity have many meanings especially in every generation and country. Sometimes it is a
matter of ability to do specific things that require handiness. Back in the past “creative people”
are able to invent things such as technologies we use now. Then, there came an era where
creativity evolved around paintings and huge sculptures.

Being creative today relates to the ability to produce art in many forms like:

If a person has a thing for organizing actors and actresses on stage then he or she can be a
Director

If the person has a talent of using or blending of colors into an art then he can be a painter

If the person has knowledge about stones or carving from solid surfaces then he can be a sculptor

You see creativity is only limited in our time and place. If in other places our talent isn’t worth
anything, then maybe somewhere our talent is considered a high class advantage.

Creativity isn’t only about:

Doing Art
Ability to produce visually perfect stuff
Or able to have a wide imagination
We can say that a person is Creative….

If he or she has the ability to stretch his or her imagination into something worthwhile or
something that pleases people, or if the person is able to think of a visual quickly and able to
execute it then he or she is CREATIVE.

Activities:

PART 1: If you were an artist, what kind of artist will you be?

PART 2: What art field will you explore? Why?

PART 3: How can you utilize the art to express yourself, your community, your relation to
others, and with the earth?
