 GCM-X detection principle is based on ionization

 Ionized gas will transmit current when voltage applied

 Sub-micron particles affect the flow of current

 GCM-X measures subtle change in current (pA)

 Current is proportional to particle concentration

Shorted Rotor Winding Turns

Indicate insulation failure in the rotor

Result in higher electrical loss – and therefore decreased generator power and
efficiency – may limit machine output

Can result in thermal and magnetic unbalance and mechanical vibrations since
shorted coils run cooler
197 of 350 Confidential

Flux Measurements
Permanently mounted flux probe in air gap is sensitive to radial flux density as
rotor passes by the probe.

Flux density at each slot is a function of the number of active turns in the slot,
distorted by the air gap flux density at that point.

Shorted turns, result in a reduce slot leakage flux for the effected slot

Difficulties with Conventional Portable Tests

Operator needs to be present to collect data at appropriate

load points

Distortion of radial flux signal is minimal where the air gap

flux density curve crosses through zero – a function of
machine load

Must therefore take multiple readings at various generator

load points for maximum sensitivity to shorted turns.

- Endwinding vibration has the highest total loss mitigation
value of recent generator failures [1]
- Monitoring is the most cost effective method for units with

EV Interpretation – Summary

・Published levels based on data are:

- Erroneous: historic data may be from poor probe location and/or vibrating
fiber optic leads
- Ambiguous: acceptable levels reported don’t specify frequency (100Hz or
120Hz or frequency bandwidth)
- Incomplete: acceptable levels are displacement, but velocity/acceleration
should be incorporated at frequencies above a few hundred Hz

・Use with CAUTION!!

- < 100 μm (4 mil) peak to peak is considered acceptable
- > 250 μm (10 mil) peak to peak is cause for some concern

・Its better to monitor continuously and use vibration trend capabilities

Iris Database

・Iris Instrument Database (iid) with similar function as PD

- Setup information (sensitivity, location, direction)
- Data (raw, summary)
- Operating conditions (current, temperature, resistive load,
reactive load, voltage)

・Use impact testing to optimize sensor location

・Installation report will include high response locations with
a reference (slot number)
・Statistical distribution of data should be possible to
develop acceptance levels

・Stator endwinding vibration is again leading to premature

generator winding failures

・Best way to detect if a problem is occurring is by

monitoring endwinding vibration with modern fiber optic

- Iris has advanced the technology for safe and accurate
detection

・Experience indicates that some care is needed when

selecting probe locations to ensure valid results
- Iris can optimize the location of sensor installation
