Heat transfer within solid bodies is usually a$ributed to the thermal conduc!on.
However, when the body is surrounded by the gaseous or liquid media, addi!onal heat
transfer mechanisms are involved and heat transfer analysis requires the fluid dynamic
analysis, which is highly complicated. In prac!cal engineering, when the temperature
distribu!on is required only within the solid body, media is excluded from the analysis and
replaced by the convec!on boundary condi!on set on the body surfaces. This is much
simpler, but requires finding out convec!on coefficients for each par!cular situa!on,
depending on the surface type and orienta!on, media speed, temperature and other
factors.

This calculator provides the natural convec!on coefficient. Calcula!on algorithms and
formulas are based on Natural Convec!on Heat Transfer Coefficient Es!ma!on

Film temperature Tf = 30.5 °C (303.65 K)

Temperature difference ΔT = 9 °C
Characteris!c length L = 0.5

Prandtl number Pr = μ·C / k = 0.703, where

μ - fluid viscosity,
C - fluid specific heat and
k - fluid thermal conduc!vity.

Grashof number Gr = L3ρ²g·ΔT·β / μ² = 142987659, where

ρ - fluid density,
g - gravita!onal accelera!on,
β - fluid thermal expansion coefficient.

Rayleigh number Ra = Gr·Pr = 100554597

Nusselt number Nu = L · h/k = 27.03
