Section 17.1

Marcela Alberto C.

Answer:
1. -Three importance of classification are: It helps in the identification of
living organisms as well as in understanding the diversity of living
organisms.

2. -Aristotle classified animals based on where they lived, while Linnaeus

instead used an animal's morphology, evidence from both fossil records
and living organisms.

3. -is the process by which scientists group living organisms. Organisms

are classified based on how similar they are. Historically, similarity was
determined by examining the physical characteristics of an organism but
modern classification uses a variety of techniques including genetic
analysis.

4. -The phylum would have more number of species as compared to that

of class. This is because according to classification phylum is bigger than
class. This means that many different classes can come under phylum but
phyla cannot come under class.

5. -Systematics may be defined as the study of the kinds and diversity of

organisms and the relationships among them. Taxonomy, on the other
hand, is the theory and practice of identifying, describing, naming, and
classifying organisms.

Section 17.2

Answer:
1. -The changing species concept has affected classification systems by
distinguishing one species from the other. It has the effect of making to
appear that species and their distinctive attributes are external and fixed.

2. -agamospecies (asexual), bio species (reproductively isolated sexual

species), ecospecies (ecological niche occupiers), evolutionary species
(evolving lineages), genetic species (common gene pool).

3. -This means that we are virtually certain to share a common ancestor

at some point in our evolutionary history. Although this 2 percent
difference can manifest itself as huge phenotypical differences between
species (such as between humans and chimpanzees), it indicates that our
species diverged relatively recently on the evolutionary timeline.
