Manipal AUA

This program by Manipal AUA will empower you to study medicine

in the USA

Today, the aspirations of youth worldwide are drifting towards global

experiences. And the medical sector is no exception. An increasing
number of young medical aspirants in India are aiming to study
MBBS/Medical programs in the USA, UK, Canada, etc., to be practising
doctors in these countries. However, the lack of guidance, entry barriers,
entrance exams and regulatory bodies have proven to be some of the
biggest hassles for Indian MBBS aspirants in fulfilling this dream of
seeing themselves as doctors in the western world.

This is where Manipal American University of Antigua’s (AUA) Medical

Program is proving to be a perfect launch pad for students to fulfil their
dreams and aspirations.
What does it take to be a medical student in the USA?

Unlike in India and many other countries where students can enroll for the
MBBS program after 12th grade, students cannot directly enroll for MBBS
admission in the US. The US med schools offer the Undergraduate M.D.
(Medical Doctor) or D.O (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degree.
Students who wish to enroll in this undergraduate medical program must
complete a 4-year bachelor’s degree or a Pre-Medical Degree.

The next step would be the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
Students are expected to have a valid MCAT score. MCAT is a computer-
based, standardized examination, and the students who take this up will
receive a percentile rank along with their MCAT score. The higher the
MCAT percentile, the better it is for admissions to the medical school of
their choice.

Most Indian aspirants who aspire to study MBBS in the USA re-consider
their dream due to the above reasons and also due to lack of clarity about
the process. This is where Manipal’s offering can help the students.

What’s Manipal AUA’s solution?

Manipal American University of Antigua (AUA) offers a medical program

where students can start their medical education journey in India, pursue
their clinical rotation & residency in the US & ultimately realize their
dream of being a practising doctor in the US (or UK/Canada). Manipal
AUA’s medical program follows a transparent 3 phase approach. A
student can apply for this program post her/his 12th Grade:

Phase 1: 4 Semesters - Pre-Med Program (in India / Antigua):

This program is a 2-year pre-medical program, mandatory for a student if
they want to study medicine in the USA. Students may complete the
program in Manipal, India or at the American International College of Arts
& Sciences – Antigua (AICASA), Antigua. The curriculum provides a
comprehensive approach to premedical training, emphasizing the
development of critical thinking skills.

Phase 2: 4 Semesters and BSIC - MD Program (Pre-clinicals in

Antigua):
Upon completion of the pre-med program, the student moves into the MD
program at Antigua. Manipal AUA uses a unique curriculum (Curriculum
Next) based on recent curriculum developments in US medical education.
The curriculum’s structure is organ-system-based, preceded by a
foundations block in which students are taught the discipline-based
sciences underlying the organ systems. This program is completely taught
at Manipal AUA’s high-tech campus in Antigua.

The next part of Phase 2 is a 13-week Basic Sciences Integration Course

(BSIC) training program that prepares students for the USMLE Step 1,
which students must successfully complete before proceeding to Clinical
Sciences.

Commented [1]: Should include UK under clinical

sciences
Phase 3: 4 semesters - Clinical Sciences (Clinical Rotations in the
USA):
Students then complete the Clinical Sciences curriculum at any of the 40
AUA-affiliated teaching hospitals, where they learn from residents and
attending physicians to treat patients as part of a hospital team and interact
directly with patients. During AUA’s Clinical Sciences curriculum,
students continue to develop clinical and communication skills in all areas
of patient care under the direction of the medical faculty at teaching
hospitals in a patient-centred environment. Core and elective rotations are
conducted at these affiliated teaching hospitals, most of which are
affiliated with US medical schools. Students have the choice of attending
elective rotations in Canada, the UK and India.

After completing clinicals, students officially graduate as doctors from

Manipal AUA and then begin to apply for residency positions in USA, UK
or Canada, depending on their preference.
