I’d like to tell you about my analysis of the story “Three men in the boat”.

It
is really amazing story written by Jerome K. Jerome. He is one of the popular
and well-known English authors. He is famous for writing essays, short
stories, and novels. Especially, he is famous for his special humor, all his
stories are based on that sparkling manner of writing.
The topic of the passage under analysis is cooking of an Irish stew .
The main issue of the passage under analysis is the relationship between the
men and the plot bullid around the idea that people can make everything if
they will try enough.
The problem of the text its humor lies in the way the three men are utterly ill-
equipped for their boat journey and also how people can solve the problems
together .
The main idea considered in the novel is the relationship between the city and
country life, as the three men decide to go on a trip to escape from the stress
of the city and give themselves a break. But they are romanticizing nature too
much and end up facing difficulties trying to perform basic life activities.
Actually, this phrase from the text may also show the idea: “I don’t think I
ever enjoyed a meal more. There was something so fresh and piquant about
it. ..Here was a dish with a taste like nothing else on earth.” It means they
great success in cooking supper.

Summary:
The travelers went for a walk round fairy-look Soning: every house was
smothered in roses, there was an old country inn with square courtyard and
low quaint rooms.
It was still early when they get settled and George suggested that with the
vegetables and the remains of the cold beef and general odds and ends they
should make an Irish stew. Harris and the narrator started peeling potatoes
cheerfully, but their light-heartedness was gone by the time the first potato
was finished, it was about the size of peanut, and George said they had to
scrape them. Scraping was even harder as polatoes were such an
extraordinary shape: all bumps and warts and hollows, four potatoes in five -
and-twenty minutes, and then picked out all the odds and ends and the
remants such as cabbage, potted salmon, cold boiled bacon into the pot.
Towards the end the dog Montmorency strolled away and reappeared with a
dead water-rat in his mouth, presenting it as his contribution to the dinner.
Discusing whether the rat should go or not, George said he would rather be
on the safe side, however Harris called him a man who hampers the world's
progress. That Irish stew was a great  success there was something so fresh
and piquant about it and it was nourishing too.
The mood of the story is rather emotional and ironic, realistic. In some parts
it’s cheerful, in some – quiet and restful, lyrical for example in describing
nature.
Linguists peculiarities: humor of situation,
humor of words for example potatoes were such an extraordinary shape : all
bumps and warts and hollows. Also the most significant devices of humor are
irony , metaphors for example Jerome ironically criticizes human
weaknesses, such a laziness, lying or drinking.
Also the text presents descriptions, some utterances for example words of the
George and Harris.
Also text divided into 7 logical complete parts :
1. Sonning
2. A splending opportunity
3. Peeling potatoes
4. Scraping potatoes
5. The recipe
6. An experiment
7. A great success
The first logically complete part starts from the beginning till the words
«awkward stairs and winding passages». Part is called Sonning. Harris,
George , the narrator and Montmorency got out at beautiful village and they
were walking around and enjoying the spectacular view.
The prevailing mood of this part is relax , lyrical and happy it’s provided by
using of certain stylistic devices. First of all there are a lot of bright epithets
such as «fairy-like nook» , «veritable picture», «quint rooms and awkward
stairs ». This epithets help us to create a picture of the place in our mind and
also show how lucky the characters are to stay at such a pictures place.
What’s more the author uses some comparison for example «it’s more like a
stage village» to show us the picture of the scene and also create the
particulars and details of it . Also there are some metaphors such as «they
were bursting forth in clouds of dainty splendour» which is used to make the
language more beautiful and rich. Furthermore we can observe a metonymy
of the village politics that bring quite humor affect because it’s seems like the
local old men group were great politicians discussing important state issues.
The second logically complete part starts with the words «we roamed about
sweet Sonning» and ends with the words «we should make an Irish
stew.»The possible title of this part is a splending opportunity. This part tells
the reader that after the characters roamed about Sonning they decided to go
back to one of the Shiplake islands where George suggested that they should
make an Irish stew with all the remains they had.
The prevailing mood of this part is more energetic and active than in the first
part. The author enhances the desired affect with the help of syntactical
construction. Let me bring the examples of it . «We roamed» , «we decided» ,
«we got settled», «we should make», it shows that the characters perform a
lot of activities. With the same stylistic device the author also name the first
character George: «he said», «he would show», it gives the reader an
opportunity to see George as the leader of the group , he always contribute
ideas, gives commands to Harris and the narrator and all in all he makes the
final decisions but with the phrase he would show us what could be done up
the river in the way of cooking, the reader can  understand that he is not an
expert of cooking but he wants to be better in this way. The characters are
excited about the idea of slap-up supper and we can see it with help of
epithets such as «splendid opportunity» , «a good slap-up supper». When the
narrator enumerates the products they have with the vegetables and the
remains of the cold beef and general odds and ends, he achieves the
humorous affect how could it be possible to make a good dish with so make
various eggs.
The third logically complete part stats with the words “it seemed a
fascinating idea” and ends with the words «you must scrape them.» Name of
this part peeling potatoes.
In this part George gathering wood and made a fire and tells to narrator and
Harris to peel potatoes but they were wasting them and George said that they
should scrape it.
The prevailing mood of this part is gloomy, stressful but in the beginning it
rather creative and optimistic mood but close to the end of the part it has
changed.
There are many epithets in this part such as a fascinating idea , cheerfully,
skittishly. This epithets show the engagement of the characters and they have
produced a picture of the ignorance to start making an Irish stew. In the
phrase «George gathered wood» , wood is a metonymy which refers to part
of a whole.
Also there are a lot of hyperbolism for example «I should never have thought
that peeling potatoes was such an undertaking», the word undertaking is used
to show how seriously the character take such a simple task. Another
example of hyperbolism is «The job turned out to be the biggest thing of its
kind that I had ever been it», it shows the humor aspect along with
comparison «it was about the size of peanut» and it’s an example of humor of
situation. And also in the end of this part «George came and had a look at it.
He said: "Oh, that won't do! You must scrape them» it shows his leadership
side.
The fourth part of the text can be called harder work than peeling. These part
begins from the words «so we scraped them» and ends from the words«It
shows you what can be done with economy and care». The whole passage is
permitted with an irony and humor which goes against the mood of the
passage sadness and dispersal. The author uses a lot of devices to show that.
There is a comparison «harder work than peeling» its use to show the
absurdity and humor of the situation. Also there is a epithet «extraordinary»
this description of the potatoes shows us the changing of the narrator’s
perception of  potatoes, he started looking for a small details in such an
ordinary thing like a potato because he spend a lot of time and afford fighting
it. We can see a graduation in the text «all bumps
and warts and hollows» this linguistic devices help us to understand the
humor of the situation but the next sentence show us that the battle with
potatoes was lost «we struck» has a humorous meaning in that case. There is
a contrast between numerals
«We worked steadily for five-and-twenty minutes, and did four potatoes» the
author shows us that characters worked so long and they had such a tiny
progress. This linguistic technique is used to show humor. Also the author
use hyperbole «it seemed difficult to believe that the potato-scrapings in
which Harris and I stood, half-smothered, could have come off four potatoes»
it shows the contrast how little they peeled and how much garbage were
around them.
And there is a metaphor «we should require the rest of the evening for
scraping ourselves», people don’t scrape themselves but in this case it’s
correlating with potatoes. There are syntactic parallel construction such as
«we scraped», «we worked», «we struck», «we said» it show us that
characters are cooperating and working all together with the same activities.
The fifth logically complete part starts with the words «George said» and
ends «thicken the gravy» it’s called the advantage of Irish stew. In this part of
the story George, Harris and the narrator picked out all the odds and ends and
the remnants such as cabbage, potted salmon, cold boiled bacon and emptied
that into the Stew.
The prevailing mood is creative and proactive. This part is filled with humor,
for instance the phrase«I fished out a couple of eggs that had got cracked» is
quite ironic.
The metaphors such as «fished out» and «emptied that into the pot»   is used
to characterize the main characters and help to explain an idea and make a
comparison. The author also uses some other stylistic devices such as a
gradation , in the phrase «all the odds and ends and the remnants» and
oxymoron «cold boiled» about bacon which combines to opposite meaning.
As for syntactical stylistic devices there is a parallel construction, several
sentences begin with the word George for example «George said it was
absurd», «George stirred it all up», «George found», «George said they
would thicken» the author uses this expressive mean to emphasize George’s
leading role in the process of cooking and his leadership position since he
control everything.
The sixth logically complete part starts with words «I forget the other
ingredients» and ends «German sausage». The possible title of this part can
be an experiment. The extract of the story tell us how the three three friends
are discussing whether to add dead water-rat into an Irish stew or not.  The
text is written with touch of humor.
The prevailing mood is relaxed but active. The author employs a member of
stylistic devices that produces humorous effect for example the author uses
epithets to describe Montmorency at the moment when he was bringing a
water-rat for example «earnest and thoughtful air», also the author
exaggerates the image of a dog and makes us laugh at certain absurd thing
such as serious discussion of the idea to add rat in a dish or not. The humor
effect achieved by using metaphors for example «every little helped» and «be
on the safe side». Also there is a discussion which make a humor of situation
itself. Furthermore this part has the most emotional place it’s Harris words
which provides with a rhetorical question and it’s a climax of the text.
The last part can be called a great success.
It describes how in the end an Irish stew turned out to be very great , it tasted
nourishing , fresh and piquant.
This last passage can be described as extremely happy and satisfying in a
comparison with a mysterious previous part. The mood is converted by
author through different stylistic devices for example it starts with a phrase
«It was a great success, that Irish stew» and it shows the result of the
experiment. Epithets such as «fresh and piquant», «a new flavor »,
«nourishing» are used to express the level of happiness of the involved
characters. What’s more , comparison  «like nothing else in earth», metaphor
«it was a poem» and hyperbole «I don't think I ever enjoyed a meal more»
their aim to help evoke positive feelings and helps to readers in-vision how
great is supper turned out to be. A phrase «One's palate gets so tired of the
old hackneyed things» is metonymy and it is used to express a person
through word palate and to show that everyone enjoyed this supper. And the
last sentence in a final passage «it was nourishing, too. As George said, there
was good stuff in it» is used as a means of indirectly given a reader some
additional information on George and how he believes this supper was a
success with his contribution as a leader of the group.
