I. Background Information

Course Title: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN – V

II. Course Objectives:

At DCSMAT, the goal of Faculty Members is to facilitate the students to secure excellent academic
results in University examinations.

Number Course Objectives


1. Design of buildings / built environment of more complex nature in a campus incorporating
campus planning principles with detailed site analysis –circulation diagram, function, form,
structural system, climate, materials and all services like sanitary and water supply, lighting
and ventilation fire fighting, acoustics, lifts escalators etc. also to develop skills for working in a
team.

2. To emphasize the importance and need of Detailing in Design.


3. To create an awareness of Building rules/National Building Code of India /other
regulations such as cinemas regulation act, CRZ etc.
4. Application of Design brief and check list for all projects. (Systems approach)
5. Development of communication skills.
Syllabus

a) Major Project 1: Design of a CAMPUS including designing the various buildings that constitute
the campus. Use of campus planning principles, waste management (solid & liquid), rain water
harvesting, use of renewable energy, landscaping swimming pool etc including all services,
acoustics incorporating circulation diagram, development of concept of design, building
bylaws/codes etc. (individual/ groups of small numbers)

Detailed design of one or two buildings in the campus not done before.

b) Minor Project 1: Study tour of 5 days duration of campuses within the state or neighbouring
states. This is conducted to facilitate the design of campuses as directed in the major project
and becomes a prelude to it. Preparation of necessary study reports, videos, power point
presentations etc.

c) Minor Project 2: Projects to boost the imagination/innovation and demand of the weaker
section of the society- Cost Effective housing for EWS

III. Teaching Learning Methods

 Class Room lectures & discussions in interactive mode


 Class Presentations by individual / group of students
 Case studies and Practical Illustrations
 Monitoring and guiding the students at each stage of design process
 Study tour/ workshops as demanded by the course
 Activity based classes and workshops :The students to have to work on making paintings, Sculptures,
models etc, by utilizing the facilities provided at the workshop facilities like Chitrashala, pottery,
Carpentary etc.
 Interactive sessions will be conducted by inviting the industry professionals related to particular
topics relevantly wherever it is necessary to give the students to understand and access the need
and requirements.
 Design reviews at every stage(pin up/table top/ppt )

 Assessment by course faculty at every design process


 Assessment by the permanent review panel at the end of every design stage including final
internal design review
 Final external assessment by external examiners

VII. Design Projects Introduced

Design of a CAMPUS (Design of a Campus: School of Architecture and Design)


Major Project 1 including designing the various buildings that constitute the campus. Use of

To Consider Tropical Architecture, Democratic space/ social space, Tropical
Urbanism, Architecture and Culture, and Sustainable Architecture aspects in
Design.

IX. Instructions to Participants

1. All forms of assignments are compulsory. Individual / Group assignments and topics for
presentation will be informed by Faculty member in advance either through Moodle /
group mail or directly in class. Students are expected to contact the Faculty Member before
presentation of each topic in the class.

2. In order to maintain uniformity, follow the diagrams given in the class for various
theoretical concepts.

3. Participants are expected to prepare detailed study notes after attending lectures.

4. Students are expected to refer the recommended text / reference books for preparation.
Web sources may also be referred for enriching the discussions and assignments.

5. Students are urged to discuss privately any impairment-related requirements face-to-face


and/or in written form with the courses facilitator.

6. will not tolerate cheating of any kind and consider it as a serious academic offence. The
work that a student submits for grading must be the student’s own work, reflecting his or
her learning.

7. We expect all the students to strictly follow the deadline which is prescribed in the session
plan including all the submissions.

X. Student feedback
Students will be asked to provide course and teaching evaluations based on policies laid down by
the Institution. In addition, the faculty can take feedback from any student and the class
representatives.

XII End of the Course Report

The instructor shall prepare a report indicating the ‘planned Vs achieved’ items in the course plan,
the general feedback, hurdles in delivery of the course, plans for improvement and other remarks.
