THE ANATOMY OF SIN (Part 3)

“Jesus answered them, “Most as-
suredly, I say to you, whoever
commits sin is a slave of
sin.” (NKJV) John 8:34
FOREWORD
Our last study proved to us that two goats were
needed yearly, for atonement in Israel: the LORD’S
goat, (w hose blood is collected and used as a
propitiation for the sin of Israel) and the live-goat
(which bore the sin of Israel away)!
We also saw two ‘deaths’ of Jesus: the exclusive
death and the inclusive death. The first goat
pictures the exclusive death of Jesus, in which He
died for our (acts of) sins, while the second goat pic-
tures the inclusive death of Jesus, in which He took
away our nature of sin!
It is also noteworthy that two crosses are implied in
the Bible: the cross on which Jesus died for us and
with us, and the cross (yoke) each believer in
Christ has to carry (in remembrance of his/ her
death with Christ, a daily reminder of the person s/he
is now and the indispensable connecting link needed)
to follow Him, successfully.
RECONCILING THE TWO ‘DEATHS’
The great challenge with sin is in its ‘stubbornness
and smartness’ - its ability to beat all security checks
and resurface, even after genuine repentance and
restitution.
You will notice that hardly have you repented and
confessed your sins, sometimes with tears, that you
start to notice an embarrassing craving (motions of
sin) for sin, from within you, again! You are not alone
in this! This is why many concluded that it is not pos-
sible to live above sin in this world, having tried,
many times, without any success.
As the first goat was killed and its blood taken to
atone for Israel’s sins for that year, so the shed-
blood of Jesus ended all sins (acts) ever committed
or will ever be committed! But, the sad truth is that
the blood of Jesus does not prevent the reoccurrence
of sins forgiven! Truth is, activity can be regulated or
stopped, but not nature!
Alas, in the same way, the dead goat reappeared (in
the live goat), so are our sins! We embarrassingly
start to notice an unrelenting craving for sin almost
immediately after our repentance and restitutions– a
situation which necessitated the ‘second death’ of
Jesus! The ‘second death’ of Jesus, was meant to
deal with the nature of sin in us. This ‘second death’
goes beyond forgiveness of sin; it brings deliverance
from sin!
Until the sins atoned for by the blood of the LORD’S
goat, are taken out of the midst of the people (by
the live goat), the confessed and atoned sins remain
with the people (as though no atonement or offering
was made for it)!
This implies that no matter how much blood of Jesus
is pled, to cleanse a man from all his sins, those sins
will yet reappear or remain in the live ‘unkilled’ goat-
the (living and stubborn) nature within, until it is
taken away by Jesus through His cross (Col. 2:14;
Eph. 2:16; Col 1:20,21)!
This nature of sin is only defeated, when a man lays
it on Jesus, by faith, and by the same faith, sees
himself included in Christ, when He was nailed to the
cross!
“Likewise reckon ye also your-
selves to be dead indeed unto sin,
but alive unto God through Jesus
Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:11 (KJV)
Until we all come to this knowledge or revelation (of
Christ’s victory over sin via the cross), our struggle
with sin will be endless!
You must regard, reckon and see yourself as dead
indeed unto sin, by your inclusion in the death of
Jesus on the cross, for you to cross to the side of
power and victory over sin.
LET US NEVER FORGET (WHAT WE WERE AND
WHO WE ARE NOW) Eph. 2:11-22
One wonders why atonement was a yearly affair in
the Old Testament! Is it just because the blood of
goats and bulls cannot remove sin totally? Not at
all. This repetition was deliberate! It is because the
atonement experience must be remembered, re-
peated, renewed and reaffirmed (from time to
time), to keep it fresh in the mind. Truth is that
anyone who stops looking at the serpent on the
pole, risks immediate death from snakebites, irre-
spective of how many times he must have looked
at the serpent on the pole (Numb. 21:5-9). To stop
to remember, repeat, renew and reaffirm the
atonement experience, is to remove its freshness
and reality from within, as implied in the New Tes-
tament parlance:
great wisdom, did this, so that our sin-loving bodies
no longer need to be slaves of sin or to be at the
beck and call of sin! We must remember this, always!
You can live a life of total victory over sin, by simply
believing, accepting and appropriating what Jesus did
for you on the cross. You lived the inherited
(depraved) life of Adam from birth, and now you are
to live, by inheritance, the (victorious) life of Christ,
also from the point of your new birth, by faith! As
you never struggled in the past, to live in unright-
eousness, so it will never be a struggle to live in
righteousness, for the life you now live in the flesh,
you will live by faith (Gal. 2:20,21)
May God give you revelation in this, unto your victory
over sin.

cross that the tyranny of sin over
us might be broken.” (Phillips);

“KNOWING THIS, that our old

man is crucified with him, that
the body of sin might be de-
stroyed, that henceforth we
should not serve sin.” (KJV);

“Your old evil desires were

nailed to the cross with him, that
part of you that loves to sin was
crushed and fatally wounded, so
that your sin-loving body no
longer needs to be a slave of
sin;” (LB) Romans 6:6

Though what Jesus did on the cross, by the inclu-

sive death, was once, and is enough for all times,
yet, that experience must be lived, daily, by the
believer in the cross of Jesus Christ, to activate
and deploy its power and sustain its victory. This is
why we must never forget that our sinful nature
died with Him on the cross so that the tyranny of
sin over us might be broken. Knowing this now,
and later forgetting it will weaken the power and
victory of what has happened on and in the Cross,
in our own lives!

Let us never forget that the old evil desires, that

old craving for sin, that part of us that love to sin,
has been crushed and fatally wounded! God, in His
