Problem(s)
1. From the Example 2 (Slides in Ch02_Facilities Planning product, process and schedule
design)
a. Propose your layout
I1 = 438,692.8
I2 = 432,967.6
I3 = 53,146.3
Choose day is 28 days and 9 hours
We have:
438,692.8
Number of hours I1 is = 1740.8444
28∗9
432,967.6
Number of hours I2 is = 1718.1253
28∗9
53,146.3
Number of hours I3 is = 210.8980
28∗9

So one machine can assemble and average of one machine is 210.9

1740.8444
Line 1 is = 8.2544 machines
210.8980
1718.1253
Line 2 is = 8.14 machines
210.8980

Line 3 is 1 machine
I4 = 103,092.8
I5 = 51,020.4
103,902.8
Number of hours I4 is = 412.3127
28∗9
51,020.4
Number of hours I5 is = 202.4619
28∗9

So, one machine is assemble and average of one machine is 202.5

103,092.8
Line 4 is = 2.02 machines
51,020.4

Line 5 is 1 machine

b. Carry out the sensitivity analysis when changing in defective rates

Rate of d1= 0.06, d2 = 0.05, d3= 0.04, d4= 0.05, d5=0.06
We have:
D1 x N1 = 0.06*1,740.8
Defected = 104.45
Good = 1,740.8 – 104,45 = 1,636.35
Defected/ Good= 104.45/1.636.35 = 6%

D2 x N2 = 0.05*1,718.1
Defected = 85.905
Good = 1,718.1– 85.905= 1,632.2
Defected/ Good= 85.905/1,632.2 = 5%
D3 x N3 = 0.04*210.9

FL-HW1 Page 3 / 7
Defected = 8.436
Good = 210.9 – 8.436 = 202.464
Defected/ Good= 8.436/210.9 = 4%

D4 x N4 = 0.03*412.3
Defected = 12.369
Good = 412.3 – 12.369 = 399.931
Defected/ Good= 12.369/399.931 = 3%

D5 x N5 = 0.02*202.5
Defected = 4.05
Good = 202.5– 4.05 = 198.45
Defected/ Good= 2%

c. Comment on the space requirement if area for each defected item is 5 times vs. good
item
We have the formula to determine the space requirement:
Space requirement = Number of good items + 5*number of defective items (space unit)
Based on the result calculated from question 1b, we have:
• D1 x N1:
• Defected = 104.45 * 5 = 522.25
• Good = 1636.35
• Defected/Good = 31%
• Space requirement D1 x N1 = 1636.35 + 5 * 104.45 = 2158
• D2 x N2:
• Defected = 85.905 * 5 = 425.25
• Good = 1632.2
• Defected/Good = 26%
• Space requirement D2 x N2 = 1632.2 + 5 * 85.905 = 2062
• D3 x N3:
• Defected = 8.436 * 5 = 42.18
• Good = 202.464
• Defected/Good = 20%

FL-HW1 Page 4 / 7
• Space requirement D3 x N3 = 202.464 + 5 * 8.436 = 245
• D4 x N4:
• Defected = 12.369 * 5 = 61.845
• Good = 399.931
• Defected/Good = 15%
• Space requirement D4 x N4 = 399.931 + 5 * 12.369 = 462
• D5 x N5:
• Defected = 4.05 * 5 = 20.25
• Good = 198.45
• Defected/Good = 10%
• Space requirement D5 x N5 = 198.45 + 4.05 * 5 = 219

Space requirement for all process = 2158 + 2062 + 245 + 462 + 219 = 5146 (space unit)
Comment:
• Because there are a lot of missing data points and the processes are merely
approximate, there will still be numerous limits in this operation even after getting an
estimate of the necessary space. For example, lack of inventory levels, storage units,
storage methods and strategies, building constraints and equipments and personnel
requirements, etc.
• However, because reality will require a lot of data and vary over time, making it
impossible to always adapt, the statistics computed above will not be exactly
accurate or close to reality.
