Naked eye

eye-catching. The headlights stand out on two levels, with the
LED daytime running lights at the top , joined by a chrome strip
where the RAM ram rests. The bumper incorporates the

Laterally, the ascending line that marks its waist , from the

driving position

Access to the driving position is comfortable and spacious,

facilitated by a handle on the "A" pillar . The adjustment of the

In general, the cabin of the RAM 1000 shows very rustic details,
suggesting its ability to be a functional vehicle for the family but
also for work. It incorporates rigid plastics in the center
console and the doors , having these covered with fabric in the
armrests.

The UConnect 5.0 system is manipulated through a 5-inch color

screen, with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and a built-in
GPS navigator . It is not understood why such a small screen
was included, nor why direct connectivity to mobile devices
was deprived. Likewise, it has dual-zone digital air conditioning
and cooling of the central glove box.

For passengers located in the back, access is somewhat fair,

with a reduced opening angle in the doors . There is good
distance for the legs but the angle of the backrest is sacrificed ,
too steep for long trips. The transmission tunnel is very high,
and it affects the space of the middle passenger.

Security

In the case of the Fiat Toro produced and conceived in Brazil,

the RAM 1000 falls somewhat short in the security item . It
only equips two front airbags , ISOFIX anchorages in the rear
seats, ABS + EBD and rigorous elements such as three-point
belts and head restraints for the 5 occupants.

Mechanics and performance

The dynamic behavior of this pick-up is very austere and calm.

The RAM 1000 is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter,
four-cylinder, 16-valve E-TorQ Evo engine that delivers 128
horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 170.4 Nm of torque at 3,750
rpm. It joins a 6-speed automatic with manual mode , with
front-wheel drive.

The suspension is exceptionally smooth, with independent

McPherson struts up front and Multi-Link at the rear . To
support the 650 kg load on the platform without affecting the
bodywork, the rear axle is higher. Sometimes there is some
understeer in curves , but since it is not a vehicle intended for
sports use, taking a curve at more than 100 km/h will not be
frequent.

Another relevant element is the brakes. Despite not having rear

discs, the effectiveness of the system is optimal and safe ,
managing to stop the vehicle in a short distance without any

acceleration and consumption

Como se dijo antes, la RAM 1000 está pensada como un

vehículo familiar o de carga moderada. Por eso, la aceleración
no es uno de sus fuertes y, de hecho, se ve afectada por la
relación de caja, muy larga y de respuesta lenta. Sin embargo,
esto no significa que sea un vehículo lento, pues su desempeño
está en el rango  de lo esperado para responder favorablemente
en las carreteras colombianas. 

Durante la prueba, se evidenció que su rango más óptimo está

entre los 80 y 110 km/h, con buena recuperación de motor y
caja gracias a la curva de torque. La velocidad máxima no
superó los 170 km/h, y su aceleración de 0 a 100 km/h estuvo
en torno a los 15 segundos.

Con modo normal, en diferentes topografías  y tipos de

carretera, arrojó un promedio de 32 km/galón. En carretera
llegó a 38 km/galón, pero en ciudad descendió a 27 km/galón. 
Allí, la eficiencia disminuye por la relación de caja, que exige
acelerar más de lo común. Al final, la autonomía del tanque está
en 520 kilómetros.

Conclusiones

Sin duda alguna, la RAM 1000 es un vehículo innovador, que

llama la atención en la calle por su diseño y concepto. La
capacidad y espacio de carga son suficientes para llevar
diversos elementos de peso considerable, y su suavidad de
marcha contribuye a viajar confortablemente en su interior.

No obstante, aún falta más publicidad y algunos ajustes

técnicos, con miras a ser un vehículo competitivo dentro del
pequeño segmento de las pick-up compactas al que RAM le está
apuntando. Llevar el ‘carnero’ es toda una responsabilidad, y a
este modelo aún podrían faltarle pergaminos para ello.
