Germany is a central European country.

It is the second most populous country in Europe and

the most populous of all European Union member states. It has a population of 83.2 million.
It is the fourth highest country worldwide in terms of gross domestic product(GDP) with a
gross of 4.26 trillion US Dollars. There are various industrial activities which include
manufacturing for automotives, machine building, electrical and electronic equipment. The
vast population and energy intensive industry stand in need of excessive electricity and
energy demand.

In terms of energy mix, Germany gets 44.6% of its energy from renewable sources. As part
of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the country intends to achieve carbon
neutrality by 2045 and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to
1990 levels.

As a major European economy, Germany is one of the EU's largest GHG emitters, making it
critical for the country to set and meet climate change mitigation targets. The trends of carbon
emissions per capita have decreased with time due to large scale deployment of renewables.
Though renewables have been a major source of power generation, it is important to note that
the recent Russia-Ukraine crisis has created an energy crisis in Germany, which has increased
coal production. The graph below represents the per capita emissions in Germany.
The group will create three scenarios for the project. As the first scenario, the group will
consider Business as Usual (BAU). We will consider the current situation as well as energy
trends in order to determine the results for 2050. It will reflect what happens if nothing
changes and things remain as they are. For the next scenario, the group will examine a rather
"optimistic" case of the NDC, and results will be generated for the investments required to
achieve the government's goals. For the final scenario, the group will work on a "special
aspect scenario" to determine how the country's plan for climate change mitigation should be
changed. This scenario will be a "practical" representation of what could and should be done.
The group chose "Increased Renewables" from the available list of special aspects for the
special case scenario. All the scenarios will include the group will look to optimize the power
generation with keeping in mind the increase in demand and the projections associated with
it.
