Abstract: This project presents a method of power saving and a means to reduce the electricity bill. The proposed system uses an embedded based controller in addition to a power meter sensing unit, microcontroller, LCD display and relay driver. The total amount will be read by the meter sensing unit, the microcontroller gets data and displays on LCD. If the power consumed predetetermined power, automatically power will be shutdown and we also have a provision to given alarm sound to consumer before the whole amount is reduced. This will reduce the extra usage power and only predetermined amount can be used. This system can be used in house and industries.

PREPAID ENERGY METER WITH TARIFF INDICATOR INTRODUCTION

The embedded technology is now in its prime and the wealth of knowledge available is mind-blowing. Embedded technology place a major role in integrating the various functions associated with it. This needs to tie up the various sources of the department in closed loop system. The proposal greatly reduces the manpower, saves time and operates efficiently without human interference. This project puts forth the first step in achieving the desired target. With the advent in technology, the existing systems are developed to having built intelligence. Ours being a developing country the power consumption is increasing on large scale to meet the growing demands. Power generation is widely based on the non-renewable sources and these sources being depleting some means have to be found for power saving.

It is a scheme of electricity billing system called P REPAID ENERGY METER WITH TARIFF INDICATOR which facilitate in improved cash flow management in energy utilities and reduces problem associated with billing consumer l iving in isolated area and reduces deployment of manpower for taking meter readings.

we are using the AT89S52 as a controller. The features and detailed descriptions were explained. Power supply A power supply unit is a device or system that supplies electrical or other types of energy to an output load or group of loads. The term is most commonly applied to electrical energy supplies, less often to mechanical ones and rarely to others. The transformer steps up or steps down the input line voltage and isolates the power supply from the power line. The RECTIFIER section converts the alternating current input signal to a pulsating direct current. However, the pulsating dc is not desirable. For this reason a FILTER section is used to convert pulsating dc to a purer, more desirable from of dc voltage. Display unit A liquid crystal display (commonly abbreviated LCD) is a thin flat display made up of any number of colour or monochrome pixels arrayed in front of a light source or reflector. It is often utilised in battery-powered electronic devices because it uses very small amounts of electric power. Relay and Driver A relay is an electrical switch that opens and closes under the control another electrical circuit. In the original form , the switch is operated by an electromagnet to open or close one or many sets of contacts. Relays are components which allow a low power circuit to switch relatively high current ON and OFF, or to control signals that must electrically isolated from the controlling circuit itself. The relay is driven by the relay driver ULN2003A IC.

Meter sensing unit The thermopile infrared sensor consists of series of 116 thermo elements, forming sensitive region si e of 545 micrometer (diameter).T he sensor is hermitically sealed into a TO-5 metal housing, with an optical filter. This standard filter allows measurements to be made in the spectral range above 5 micrometer wavelength. The thermo sensor exhibits an almost white noise,

comparable to a ohmic resistance it is a constant versus frequency up to its frequency limit, and is directly proportional to incident radiation. Advantages 1. Fault detection is done very quickly. 2. We can save the energy and time. Applications 1. EB station 2. Power generator side 3. Industrial side Conclusion The prepaid energy meter designed in this pap er is reliable, robust in use, easy to implement. The man power required by the electricity board, with the use of prepaid energy meter considerably reduces and saves the revenue of the electricity board. Further it also saves considerable very useful time of the consumer in paying the electricity bill by standing in the long queue. Thus the prepaid energy meter is not only useful one for the electricity but also for the common man.
