Samsung Pays 539 Million Dollars to Apple
by Hyeyeon Lee

This year on May 24th, a jury of U.S courts came to the verdict that
Samsung violated Apple’s design patent. In the lawsuit, which began in
2011, the U.S court decided that Samsung violated Apple’s design pat-
ent, but the Supreme Court accepted Samsung’s appeal that there was
a problem with the standard of compensation so it was cancelled. Since
then, trials have been underway to recast damages.
This past May 24th, the final decision was that Samsung needs to
pay Apple 539 million dollars. Everyone including Samsung and apple
thought that the money Samsung will pay to Apple will reduce, but
the figure represents 140 million dollars more than the $399 million
amount which was calculated in 2016.
Samsung first copied Apple and launched Galaxy S since Apple’s Ip-
hone 3GS launched in Korea. The year Galaxy S launched was 1 year
after Iphone 3GS was launched in Korea. When researchers examined
what Samsung copied Apple in detail, first, the silver border which is
surrounding the phone was the same. The color and material Samsung
used was also exactly the same with Apple’s design.
Second, Samsung’s Galaxy Ace +’s deposition of an introduction to de-
vice photo is the same as Apple’s Iphone 3GS which was in 2011. Then,
Samsung not only copied the interface of Apple, but also copied the
advertisement.
Samsung copied the design of the icons, the round edge of the icons,
the way the date appears in the calendar, and the dock which fits four
applications.

These are the icons of applications comparing
applications from both Samsung and Apple.
The telephone icon both have white on green
backgrounds. The Gallery icon of Samsung
and Apple both had sunflower images, except
Samsung zoomed in the sunflower. The Set-
tings icon are both designed with gears and
the memo icon is almost exact the same. The
icon which represents contact addresses of
Samsung and Apple both has a note with a
silhouette of person.
Lastly, Samsung’s material/shape/size of
the container boxes and the space between
the phone and the wrapping paper was the
same as Apple’s. Even after Galaxy tab was
launched, the wrapping container Galaxy tab
copied the whole design of iPad’s wrapping
container box.

Most of the Koreans’ reaction was that Samsung violated other’s de-
sign, but 539 million is too much money for a mere design violation.
Some of them said that they wonder what will happen to Samsung
after Samsung pays the money to Apple.

For the dressing, students need to wear formal clothes, not singlets, neither
ripped/labelled clothing and short shorts. All academy athletes are expected to be
there. There were also forms that all attending students needed to sign ahead of
time.

Dahee Jang, the Athletics Prefect was asked why this event was held in the first
place. She answered, “We are holding this event to acknowledge athletes that
have participated in academy sports throughout the 2017~2018 academic year,
and also to give out a special award to people who have shown a high level of
performance within the academy.”

The people in charge of this event are the Athletics Council including Dahee, and
Ms. Amber Boyce. This event is focused on branksome athletes and all the hard
work they have done, and all those time they had given away to attend in all of
those tournaments.

What Menu Do Branksome Hall
Students like the Most?
by Dorothy Eunsoo Jang

Another day at Branksome Hall Asia. It is 11:15, and students are milling into the
cafeteria to eat their lunch. Right in front of the entrance, there is a cupboard with
a sample of each menu available for the day’s lunch.

There are 5 menus you can choose from. International serves food from all over
the world with a different country as its inspiration every time. The Korean option
is always a secure and healthy division of food, always with some kind of Korean
soup, rice and some side dishes. The Grill provides rice or sometimes noodles that
are heated up right before we eat them, normally with tasty meat to go with it.
The Pasta option comes with a choice between a normal tomato sauce and an-
other kind of pasta. Lastly, the pizza stand is perfect for a “light” lunch. Like pasta,
the cheese pizza comes out every day, but also with a new variety.

All of these are good choices, but let’s take a look at what the students have to
say about this.

According to the 6th grade students of 6G, the Grill was the most loved. Nobody
liked international or pasta the best, while 10 people agreed that the Grill was the
best menu. Six people thought Korean was the best. Finally, three people voted
for pizza as the best.

When asked why, One student said that she selected grill because she liked it
most and ate it most often because the line was short for most of the time, and
that it was also yummy. Another student said that she picked pizza as the best
menu, because it suited her appetite the most, and also because there were vari-
ous kinds of pizza you could pick from.

The eruption of Mt. Kilauea in Hawaii
by Youngwon Hong

On May 3rd, 2018, Mt. Kilauea in Hawaii erupted. This caused many people to
evacuate the island. This volcano last erupted on January 3rd in 1983.

A number of big earthquakes happened during and after the eruption. This wasn’t
a small eruption and it has been continuing for days and days. When Mt. Kilauea
erupted, toxic gases came out which are very dangerous and can cause diseases.

Maija Stenback said, “The color was unbelievable, and the sound was unbeliev-
able.” The lava was very good to see because it was very big. It said that Kilauea
is one of the volcanoes that are active and the eruptions will follow with several
earthquakes.

After the eruptions, two homes were destroyed. People said that they could hear
the eruption from miles away and that meant that it was powerful and a very big
eruption. Officials told the residents to pack their belongings and also be ready to
evacuate. The eruption damaged more than 25 houses and a lot of people were
asked to leave and evacuate the island. The eruptions can happen during the fu-
ture so residents have to be aware and being ready to evacuate.

Kilauea is reacting by creating earthquakes so the people living near need to be

aware and prepare. Nearly 2,000 people Puna on the big island have been evac-
uated. More evacuations are expected as more lava’s coming out. So far, the lava
has covered 3.4 square miles of land. Residents should remain aware of further
dangers in the coming days and weeks.

Branksome Hall Asia Joins MUNexus 2018
by Yerin Kang
During April 20, 21 and 22, 2018, some students from BHA and other international
schools attended MUNexus 2018. For those who do not know, MUN stands for Model
United Nations. At MUNexus students experience the United Nations by roleplaying as
delegates of different countries to discuss pre-selected topics.

The MUNexus conference was at the Dwight School Seoul which is an international
foreign school located in Seoul’s Digital Media city. The students and teachers who par-
ticipated in MUN rode an airplane to Seoul, and stayed at the Stanford hotel, which was
near the school.

The MUN conference was divided into 4 groups: the Human Rights Council, the Security
Council, the EcoSoc Committee, and the General Assemblies (GA). The Human Rights
Council and the Security Council are for those people who have experience in MUN.
Every group started their conferences in different places around the school.

The conference in EcoSoc started with presenting your opening speeches. The Chair and
other delegates listened to the speeches, and sometimes those delegates passed notes
if they wanted to talk about the topic during the lobbying session. Lobbying session is
when you discuss with the other delegates about your topic.

Afterwards, you meet up with the people who researched the same topic as you. There
were 3 topics in EcoSoc: Tax Evasion (Movement of money), Natural Disaster and Child
Marriage.

The debate started after every team prepared for the debate. To prepare for the debate,
each team made resolutions about their topic. A resolution is a document that suggests
a solution to one of the given problems. The debate was about whether to change, edit,
or add amendments to the resolutions each team had made about their topics.

The next MUN activity, which is the Trischool MUN conference in the GEC, will start dur-
ing about Term 1 in Semester 1 next year. How about giving it a try?

Korea’s Air Condition Problems
by Joowon Park

People wearing masks because of

the fine dust . PC: SBS News
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) announced that,
in 2016 Korea was second place at fine particulate matter exposure. Fine dust is classi-
fied as class one at the World Health Organization (WHO). Fine dust can cause serious
problems like blues, suicide, Alzheimer’s disease, eye infection, baby brain development
disability, and lowered immunity. In 2014 in Korea 7 million people died because of air
pollution. And in 2018, 1 in 6 are dying because environmental pollution.

Dr. Dora from the WHO said that advanced countries have better air condition and the
poor countries have worse. Korea has 0.3 Million dollars per person in the GDP and is
therefore considered an advanced country. But while advanced countries have under
20μg/m³ at fine dust concentration, Korea had 27μg/m³ in one year. Korea is continuing
huge amounts of effort at stopping air pollution, so what is the cause of the huge air
pollution at Korea?

A huge reason of the air pollution in Korea is because of the Chinese Factories. Accord-
ing to the WHO, 30-50 percent of the air pollution in Korea is because of the factories
from China and Korea would be similar to other advanced countries with their absence.

Recently, the reason why during 2018, the air pollution in Seoul has more traffic and
smoke that cause huge air pollution, and Jeju that is form clean area, has the similar fine
dust amount, was because Chinese factories.

“If the air pollution can’t have solution until 2060, 110 of 1 million people will die faster,”
said the OECD warning to Korea in June 2016. Also, the professor of nature medicine,
Jeongwoen Lim said that if we don’t concern stopping the air pollution until 2024, at the
capital area,19,958 people will die earlier. The related social cost will be 12 trillion 3259
hundred million.

The Korea Environment Institute (KEI) said that using the big data, by the standard cost
of 2013, the sum hospitalization of one person will be 377,000 won.

The air pollution range is getting higher at Korea. We need to stop getting more prob-
lems caused by air condition.

music chart. The Billboard Music Awards have been held since 1990 in December. This
year’s host was Kelly Clarkson. The most awarded people were Ed Sheeran and Ken-
drick Lamar.

Red Carpet Fashion

At last year’s BBMA Red Carpet, Camila Cabello wore the best fashion when she wore
her red laces dress. Hailee Steinfeld wore the second best, because of the lace and the
pattern matched with the color of the dress.

At the 2017 BBMA Red Carpet the worst fashion that singers wore, was all black for
Noah Cyrus because the black didn’t look good on her. Another worst fashion is Nicole
Scherzinger because there are so much skin showing, but she looked beautiful.

On this year’s BBMA Red Carpet THE best fashion was Taylor Swift in a Versace dress,
and Kelly Clarkson’s floor-length, all-black dress. Dua lipa had her makeup just right for
her dress and it looked amazing.

THE Worst fashions on this year’s Red Carpet was Jennifer Lopez with her leather dress
and Jenna Dewan who wore a short dress that looked weird somehow.

All of these dresses were all expensive and the singers wore it how they wanted to.

2018 BBMA host Kelly Clarkson said that “To prepare for
hosting the Billboard Music Awards, I already [had] 20
costume changes planned.”

Celebrities were interviewed and photographed on the

read carpet. As this event was really important performers
needed to look good.

by Yerin Kang

Dua Lipa performed at the Billboard

Music Awards (BBMAs) on May 21,
2018 in Los Angeles with her song
“New Rules.” She is currently (The
week of May 26, 2018) the 20th on
the “Artist 100” chart from Billboard.

Dua Lipa is an English singer-

songwriter. She debued in 2015,
and released her album, Dua Lipa, Dua Lipa performing “New Rules.” PC: Billboard

more. The song she had performed, “New Rules,” went to the top 10 in the United
States.

Billboard is an American entertainment media brand. Some popular events Bill-

board has opened are the super bowl 2018 or the BBMAs. For artists to attend
the BBMAs, they have to get enough popularity, before Billboard will ask them to
attend for the next annual music awards.

As the fans watched Dua Lipa’s live performance, many of them fell in love.

“She was gorgeous on stage,” said Hyeji Kim, a Branksome Hall Asia Student, and
Dua Lipa fan.

“This is honestly my first time watching Dua Lipa perform this song live and I ab-
solutely loved it. This was a really good performance, the dancing was good, and
the set looks stunning. I can’t wait to see her perform more songs from her album
in the future... I love this song so much, but I think it’s time they let her do more
because her album is filled with so many great ones,” tenorbuds, a YouTuber
commented.

With the loving comments, there were also many other fans who expressed their
displeasure with the performance.

“The Brit Awards performance was way better than this one. Everything seemed
off here,” commented Popcorn Bros. (Youtuber).

“This flamingo is so weird. Looks like she was laying in raw meat...” said Gabriel

The Best k-pop songs on 2018 May!
by Youngwon Hong

As k-pop is loved all around the world, many people listen to it and purchase
merchandise which means goods that are sold and bought. As the idols and the
entertainments make new songs, fans get busy voting for them to make a hit.
There are of course famous and infamous groups. Some groups became famous
because they tried hard in order to move up a little bit. Looking at the best k-pop,
I decided to only use the top 6 k-pop songs of May 2018.

Everyone has different opinions because most of students know and like k-pop
while some do not really like it. I first did a quick survey about what songs stu-
dents like the vote and I wanted to see what was the most famous of all.

This is the chart of the best songs from 1st to 6th. PC: Melon
This chart shows if songs came higher or lower and how many times. This chart
changes recently because people listen to different songs. In the right side of the
chart, there is a heart sign which means how many people liked the music.

The 1st place currently is from BOL4 which is a girl band which makes a hit when
the music is released. In 2nd place is Fake Love which is BTS’s song which is a
famous song because BTS is a globally famous boy group which started as a hip-
hop group and decided to change to another theme and was successful.

There are famous groups like BTS, Exo, Twice, Red Velvet, Seventeen, and more.
If the groups have lots of fans, they will be most likely to get awards easily and
get to the top 1 from the song chart.

Since there are lots of fans of BTS in our class, the song by BTS had the most
votes of all. I think they had the most votes because there are lots of fans. The
survey helped me a lot to see what songs are famous from my classmates and
even though I did not ask the reason, it made me wonder the reason. I knew a lot
from the survey and it was very helpful.

How did BTS win ‘Top Social Artist’?
by Riwon Jang

On May, 20th 2018 the BBMAs

were held in Las Vegas. BTS won
the ‘Top Social Artist.’ Famous sing-
ers such as Justin Bieber, Ariana
Grande and others were chosen as
candidates. BTS won overwhelm-
ingly with 94 %. Other singers were
1% or 2%. It was the first korean
singer to win the BBMA for two
consecutive year. They were also
awarded in ‘Top Social Artist’ last
year. Before them, Justin Bieber
BTS on stage at the BBMAs (2017). PC: Billboard News
had been awarded for six years.

BTS is a K-pop boy band group. BTS debuted June 13th, 2013. They have 7 mem-
ber (RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook). RM is leader and rapper of BTS .
SUGA and J-Hope are also rappers. Jin, Jimin, V and JungKook are vocal members.
They are all Korean. Even though no foreigner is among the members, it is popu-
lar abroad.

The identity of the ‘Top Social Artist’ is known as‘ Social 50 Chart.’

The Social 50 chart picks the most active artists in society. They organize and
rank artist media streaming, weekly albums, and followers. Therefore, the higher
the ranking in ‘Social 50 chart,’ the higher the probability of receiving the prize in
‘Top Social Artist.’ BTS is very strong on the social 50 chart.

The Social 50 chart isn’t the only that is important to get ‘Top Social Artist’ award.

After two to three weeks of voting, voters will be selected for the award, includ-
ing the annual album sales numbers, streaming and social data index.

BTS was strong in all these conditions. The reason they were strong in all these
conditions was because they have great fandom. They have a fans big enough to
sell out 40 concerts in 19 cities last year.Even the fans are dedicated to them.

They won only ‘Top Social Artist’ last year, but this year they won the award and
performed on stage. They are growing every year.

Historical Meeting of President Donald J. Trump
by Gaeun Hur
and President Moon-Jae In
On May 22nd, President Donald J. Trump and President Moon-Jae In met in the White
House to have a short discussion about North Korea’s situation. Mainly about the de-
cision of Denuclearization and the meeting between Donald J. Trump and Kim Jong Un
which will be held June 12th in Singapore.

Before they met in earnest in the White House, President Trump and President Moon-
Jae In talked on the phone about the meeting in the White House on May 19th. They
also shared their opinions and ideas about the topic of meeting.

For the meeting with the two presidents, people expected that they will talk about the
deep truth and thinking about Denuclearization and Korea’s peace. Reporters said the
actual meeting became like an interview of two presidents talking about the meeting of
President Trump and Kim Jong Un of South Korea.

In the meeting, President Trump mentioned that he thinks Kim Jong Un is “serious”
about Denuclearization and wondered if he will meet with South Korea. Because of the
questions about meeting with Kim Jong Un, President Trump said he has some condi-
tions that he wants and if that conditions are not met, he will cancel the meeting.

Through the whole discussion about Denuclearization of South Korea, President Trump
showed a negative attitude about the meeting.

Otherwise, President Moon-Jae In said President Donald J. Trump will lead the meeting
with Kim Jong Un well, and the meeting with President Trump and Kim Jong Un will hap-
pen smoothly without problems. President Moon-Jae In gave expectations and hopes to
President Trump with saying, “The person who is in charge is President Trump.” He also
asked to the secretaries and main officials in the White House to give Korea positive
help before the meeting started.

President Donald J. Trump and President Moon-Jae In showed opposite opinions

through the meeting which did not match each other well. This point made the original
meeting time, which is 30 minutes, reduced to 21 minutes.
All the people in the White House
showed their embarrassment about
the meeting being shorter than they
expected.

Even though the meeting with Presi-

dent Trump and President Moon-Jae
In finished well, President Trump an-
nounced that he canceled the meet-
ing with Kim Jong Un on May 24th.

Long-Hated Crimes Against
Street Cats Increases Rapidly
by Dorothy Eunsoo Jang

A series of street cat abuse cases have recently been found. These crimes were
committed in the most cruel and bizarre ways. As the small pranks on these cats
swell to violations, many are saying that the government needs to conduct thor-
ough investigations as well as try to change the negative perspective towards the
animals.

According to the Incheon Street Cat Protection Coalition on May23rd, a burnt cat
was discovered near Yongju-dong, Gyeonggi Province. It was rescued by the the
Protection Coalition and is being medically treated. Not only is it suffering from
the burns on the inside of its ear, but it is also suffering a severe injury on the
lower part of its arm such as necrosis and maggots. Another case was found pre-
viously around the same Province. According to the Animal Action Kara, on May
9th, a body of a cat was found cut into pieces. The pieces were cut neatly, like
someone used a pair of scissors. Plus, it’s innards were nowhere to be seen.

In March, two incidents were also discovered. One had pulmonary bleeding from
a rib fracture along with difficulty in breathing. Two weeks later, an indentation
of its eyes were also found. As these abuse cases happened subsequently, the
voices of animal protection organizations are getting louder. They think that these
brutal attacks to innocent animals are actually done by humans. The organiza-
tions raised the issue and reported it to the police, but the suspect has not yet
been found.

Such savage incidents targeting animals are continuing to occur. To meet with
this, the animal protection law has been strengthened recently. Animal abuse is a
two year prison sentence or 20 million won.
The problem for this issue is that street
cat abusers are extremely hard to identi-
fy. Investigators also spent up a long pe-
riod of time, because they had to inquire
random people. In addition, many offi-
cials are not aware of the animal protec-
tion law properly, and also there are no
specific owners of these street cats. Due
to these kind of problems, the investiga-
tion is forced to take a back seat.

This cute cat just wants to be loved.

Sinking of MV Sewol
by Yerim Jeong

Second-year high school students took a boat called the “Sewol ferry” to Jeju Is-
land to take a field trip. The students going to Jeju Island thought about the school
trip with much expectation. Suddenly the waves hit and the wind began to blow,
and the boat began to tip over, and the announcement asked everyone to wait on
the boat.

The students followed the announcement in fear, as the ship began to flip over,
and some of the students started to swim themselves out of the boat.

When the ferry capsized, the news reported, ‘The ship capsized, but the students
were all rescued.’ But after a few hours, on the left side of the news, the num-
ber of people who died, the number of survivors, and the total number of people
came out to the public. As time passed, the number of people who died grew, and
citizens get worried.

After the ferry sank, the government explained that the ship was leaning a little
bit because of the heavy load on the bottom and the ship sank because of the
movement. However, survivors said it was not. Also, when the ship sank, the first
person to be rescued was the captain of the Sewol ferry. The announcement con-
tinued to broadcast what the staff had recorded, not what they were saying live.

Over the years, it has been four cycles and citizens continue to express regret
over the ferry disaster. The government has resumed the rescue of the failed stu-
dents, which it stopped for a while, and is still making a lot of efforts to do so.

Mr. McAdams’ Debut!

Mr. McAdams has a very interesting story! For background information, There is
a British TV show called ‘Rosie and Jim’ for children, that aired on TV from 1990
to 2000. To briefly explain the story, there are these rag dolls, Rosie and Jim. They
ride a narrowboat that is also named ‘Rag doll.’ They follow the ‘Rag Doll’s owner
and driver together. However, no one knows about them because they only move
when no one is looking. Even the owner does not know!

Now, to the point: Mr. McAdams had an appearance on the show! He said that it
was in the episode called the ‘Summer Fun.’ He was running and the narrowboat

Have you heard Branksome Hall Asia’s History?
by Hyeyeon Lee

Have you ever heard about how the name ‘Branksome Hall’
was made? Have you ever heard about why is our school’s
uniform is green? Have you ever heard about why this
school was built in Jeju? There are lots of fun and interesting
informations about the history of Branksome Hall Asia that
are hidden.

First, the name. The word ‘Asia’ which comes on the end of
Branksome Hall follows because Branksome Hall Asia is
built in Jeju, which is part of Asia. Then how about
‘Branksome Hall?’ There is ‘Brankholme Castle’ which is a
five-story tower at Branxholme, at about 3 miles
south-west of Hawick in the Borders region of Scotland.
The castle was extensively remodelled by William Burn in
1837 for the 5th Duke of Buccleuch even though it was first
Branksome Hall uniforms.
burned down. The name ‘Branksome Hall’ was named after PC: Branksome.on.ca
this castle.

This is Branksome Hall Asia’s uniform, and also Branksome Hall Canada’s. There is a lot of
green. Have you heard why? The color of our uniform is adopted from the Hunting Stewart
tartan which is related to the Scottish origins of Branksome Hall. Many students know that the
main color of Branksome Hall is green. However, many students think and feel that the color
purple is also becoming our school’s main color because we can easily see both green and pur-
ple together on a athletic team uniform, bus, school file, school finalsite, pen and etc.

Many people who are interested in BHA or related to BHA like students and parents seem like
they are also interested in the school uniform, and there is a lot of difference between people
who love our school uniform, and people who hate our school uniform. People who don’t like
the uniform mostly don’t like it because they only like the original green or colors which are
light greens such as Emerald, Mint and bright cyan, not the dark green in our uniform.

Third, this is why Branksome Hall Asia was built in Jeju even though there were many places
in the world where they could build another Branksome Hall campus. As a JDC initiative, they
decided to build international schools in Jeju because they wanted to provide education for
Korean students who were going abroad to study. Also, our school Branksome Hall Asia has an
exchange camp to Branksome Hall Canada, and the reason why we have an exchange camp is

Hawaii, Kilauea Volcano Eruption
by Julia Hyojeong Yang

On May 17th, the mountain of Hawaii,

Kilauea Volcano started to erupt. There
were houses near the mountain and the
lava spread down the mountain including
near the houses.

Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes.

The eruption took place after several
earthquakes. Previously, there was a 6.9
eruption earthquake on May 4th. The
eruption happened near the Leilani estates The toxic gas is coming out from the mountain. PC: BBC
on Hawaii island.

After the eruption began, people lost their homes because of the flowing lava. Nearly
2,000 people evacuated. People are still staying in emergency shelters, but they have
no clue what to do next. Another related deadly situation is the toxic gas. People are
breathing the toxic gas released from the volcano which has chemicals that are bad for
their health.

Mini history behind the volcano: in 2008, a new gas vent opened and this made the
volcano to develop into a lava lake. As the lava flows out, the blocks and plates from the
volcano flowed down together and there becomes a lack of blocks and plates. The ash
comes out as it prepares to erupt. The ash falls into people’s backyard and it was very
toxic and poisonous. In addition, during the eruption, there was one report that says one
man was hit by a rock by the volcano when he was just sitting on his balcony.

All these times, the volcano eruptions were all dangerous. Since the year 1500, 280,000
people have been killed by volcanic eruptions. 60 volcanoes have erupted each year. The
reason that is very dangerous is that it can reach temperatures of 700℃. Throughout
the years, the biggest volcano eruption that happened is in Pompeii which happened
in 79 AD. The whole country was destroyed by the eruption. The most dangerous time
was when the volcanic lava flowed into the power plant site. If the lava flowed into the
power plant, it could release more toxic gas.

One of the people who was experiencing the volcano eruption said, “It was like when
someone plays the bass really heavy, and you can feel the bass you could really feel the
power and the lava. It sounds very explosive.” Some people didn’t want to leave their
homes when the volcano eruption started. The lava was just red and glowing, and the
rocks were just glowing too. It was just 1200c so, people could walk away normally.
The lava is not too hot temperature so people just walk normally and they are kind of
fine with it.

Kid Normal: Super without
by Ms. Briard
Super Powers?
If I’m being honest, when I first picked up the novel
Kid Normal by Greg James and Chris Smith, I put it
back. While you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, I
was definitely guilty. I mean, the edges of the pages
are yellow, and not in what I’d consider an attractive
way.

At the time of purchase, I was at the What the Book

Fair and I wanted to get a variety of books from all
sorts of genres and styles for my classroom.

As I arrived at the check out, Kid Normal had migrat-

ed back into my basket. Thus, my fate was sealed.

No regrets.

The novel is about Murph Cooper. Desperate to find

called “capabilities” or “capes” for short. Children
enroll to learn how to control powers like super strength or speed so that they can either
enter the world as future heroes, or merely gain control of less desirable capabilities
(transforming your head into a giant fog horn or summoning two tiny horses) and return
quietly to the normal world. Murph, being a normal kid, doesn’t quite fit in. But with an
evil wasp-man on the loose, he just might have to step up!

The novel is a blend of images, text, and font choices that come together to add a depth
to the story, especially when it comes to sounds. The authors work full time as radio DJs
and this is definitely apparent in their writing. They include jokes and sometimes inter-
rupt their own story to speak directly to the audience. I can almost imagine them reading
parts of the story aloud.

While I fell in love with the overall story and quirky cast of characters
(again, summoning miniature horses?), my favourite part of the book is
how James and Smith use descriptive language--something I never
thought I’d say. The descriptions, however, are hilarious. Half of the time Scan for a special

compare characters, settings and objects using similes and metaphors
that are utterly ridiculous and I can’t help but burst into laughter.

For the hysterical writing, engaging plot, and interesting characters, I gave this book 5
out of 5 stars. I would recommend it to students and teachers who enjoy a superhe-

MUNexus EcoSoc
by Joowon Park
The MUNexus event that was from April 19 to 22, 2018, was a great experience for many other
people that participated in the conference. It was held at Dwight international school, and the
students that went to MUN were able to sleep at the Standford hotel for 3 nights.

First of all MUN is abbreviation of Model United Nation, which is a conference that is similar to
a real UN conference. MUN was divided into 3 groups for Branksome Hall Asia students. There
was the General Assembly, the EcoSoc committee, and the Human Rights Council.

Today we will look in detail at EcoSoc. At Ecosoc, there was 9 people from Branksome Hall Asia.
There was delegates for Ghana, Vietnam, Czech, Ireland, Morocco, Bonasia, Qatar, and Kuwait.
Branksome Hall Asia students was divided into 3 teams in their councils and went into other
rooms with other school members. Ecosoc was held in the assembly hall of the school.

During the conference the delegates of the country and the leader, which is the president,
cannot say their own names. They need to speak in third person and say their country names or
‘President.’ For example “The delegate of Ghana stands up.”

The first day, EcoSoc did opening speeches by going up at the platform. The opening speech is
a speech saying our country’s opinion related to the three topics that were measures to regu-
late the movements of money, natural disasters, and child marriages. Also when the delegates
think that they have similar opinion, delegates can send messages by writing on the memo pad
that MUNexus gave before the conference began. After then, delegates can talk at the lobby
session.

Then the delegates get time until the end to meet people that is related in each topic and get to
write about the rules related to the topic together. From the second day to the last day, dele-
gates get to change our rules that each topic made yesterday, by talking together. From this
point the real conference begins.

During the second day night, the delegate gets social meeting at the Standford hotel wearing
anything that delegates like. This time can be the time to build up social relationship for the
delegates. According to the students that went to MUN they said that the social night was one
of the things that kept in their memories.
At the last night before going back to
Jeju, the students was able to go to
Hongdae and play for 2 hours. Many
of the 6 graders that went to MUN
said that the time when they went
to Hongdae was the best memory at
MUN, and said that they wanted to go
to MUNexus again next year.

I wish that the students that want to

go to MUN next year can learn from
this article, and get help from MUN.
