OUR VACATION

Key

1. Warm up

5 mins.
Call attention to the phrase have fun and work with the whole class to match the phrases with the pictures. Note
that the activities are presented as -ing forms (gerunds) in order to facilitate their use as present continuous verb
forms later in the lesson. Elicit/explain the meaning of a selfie (a photo that you take of yourself with your phone,
possibly to post on social media). Drill the pronunciation of all items. Then pose the follow-up questions (you
should elicit/explain a city break is a short vacation in a large city) and nominate students to answer; accept any
reasonable response.

1. buying souvenirs 2. eating ice cream 3. eating pizza 4. sightseeing

5. skiing 6. sunbathing 7. swimming 8. taking photos / selfies
Answers to questions:

1. Sunbathing, swimming, eating ice cream. 2. Buying souvenirs, sightseeing, taking photos.

2. Listening

10 mins.
Students will listen to the recording twice. The first time, they listen for main idea.– Explain the context and go
over the instructions. Play the recording and check answers. If students need to listen again, that’s fine. Then
students listen for detail and complete a gap-fill, writing three words in each space. Set the task and give them a
minute to recall the missing words if they can. Then play the recording and check answers.

a. d b. e c. a d. f e. b f. c
Answers:

1. the hotel pool.

2. remember the vacation
3. streets and buildings
4. Now I want

3. Language point

10 mins.
Students have already covered the basic forms and uses of the present continuous in the lesson plan, How’s the
weather? In this lesson, they are introduced to three further points: forming question-word questions, comparison
of the present simple and present continuous, and state (or stative) verbs. Go through the examples and activities
with students one by one. Elicit/explain the meaning of happen regularly ; if appropriate, you may want to translate
this into students’ L1. You may want to be more explicit in the final section and say that these forms are incorrect: "I
am liking ice cream. Now I am wanting ice cream too." Finally, drill the target language in all the example sentences
with the students.

1. question word
2. a form of to be
3. subject

OUR VACATION

4. verb + -ing
Grammar rules:

1. at this moment or around now 2. that happen regularly or are always true

4. Practice

10 mins.
Go over the instructions and read the example with the class. Students work alone and then check answers in
pairs. They will benefit more from the exercise if they rewrite the whole sentence rather than just numbering the
question words, and they also need to write full answers. Pose the follow-up questions after checking answers
with the class so students can demonstrate an understanding of how the present simple is used in contrast with
the present continuous.
VARIATION: if you want to take less time for this exercise and increase the level of challenge, do it orally only.
Students can work in pairs to rehearse their answers, and then you can check with the whole class.
NOTE: If students are finding this difficult, skip the speaking stage and do the extra practice/homework exercises
in class for additional support.

1. Where is he skiing today? - He is skiing in the north today.

2. Why are they buying souvenirs? - They are buying souvenirs so they can remember their vacation.
3. Where is she traveling right now? - She’s traveling in China (right now).
4. Why are you reading that book? - I’m/We’re reading that book for my/our English class.
5. Where are they sightseeing at the moment? - They are sightseeing in the city (at the moment).
6. Why do you take so many photos? - I take so many photos because I’m a photographer.
7. Does she like ice cream? - She prefers cake.

1. Both 6 and 7 use the present simple. In 6 this is

because it’s a regular event relating to a job. In 7 this is
because like and prefer are state verbs.

5. Extra practice/homework

2 mins to explain.
These exercises can be assigned for homework or used instead of the speaking activity if the class needs more
support. If you use these for homework, make sure that you mark the exercises in a future class, or collect them
from students and mark them yourself outside class. If you prefer, you can make the answers available to students,
and they can check their own answers.

1. are 2. taking 3. take

4. doing 5. eating 6. doesn’t like
7. fun 8. souvenirs 9. are
10. So 11. hate

6. Speaking

13 mins.
In this stage, students will activate the vocabulary and grammar from the lesson in a speaking activity. Go over
the instructions for the activity and give students a few minutes to look through the dialogue before they start
work. It will be helpful to point out to students that they will need to look at what comes both before and after

together to write in the missing information. Monitor and support as necessary.
Students can practice their dialogue and perform it for another pair to see how they handled the task. Encourage
them to discuss any differences and make suggestions/corrections. Round off the session by correcting any errors
with the target language that you noticed while monitoring the speaking, including pronunciation. The answers
shown are sample answers; you can accept any reasonable alternatives that both suit the context and are accurate.

These exercises are designed as a cooler activity if you have time in your lesson. In this activity, students can
identify five water sports that people do at the beach. Go over the information and give students a couple
of minutes to match the words and pictures. Check answers, including pronunciation, and pose the follow-up
questions to open a brief discussion for pairs or the whole class.
