Through the Magic Knife

Cal was bored! It was the third day in a row that he had to stay indoors
to look after his poorly sister. And to top it all off, it was a
beautiful day and he longed to be outside having an
adventure.

Cal was slumped at the kitchen table as the sun shone

brilliantly through the window. On the kitchen bench lay a
knife, its sharp blade gleaming. Cal noticed his reflection
on the blade and thought, ‘something’s not quite
right with this knife. I feel weird’.

Suddenly, an outline of a dragon appeared on the

blade. It looked so real! Blazing flames flowed from its
nostrils and its scaly wings stretched out as wide as his eyes
could see. With his heart beating like thunder, Cal didn’t dare to breathe. Just then, a hazy
cloud appeared in front of him. When the cloud vanished, he was face-to-face with the large
dragon, with fierce-looking eyes, standing in a dank, murky cave.

Stunned and petrified, Cal knew he had to escape. He darted out of the cave and ran for his
life! He could hear the beastly dragon behind him, gaining on him. The furious dragon, with
saliva drooling from its mouth, was ready to attack. Cal, in sheer panic and desperation,
searched for somewhere to hide. The ferocious dragon got closer and closer and with its
mouth stretched out wide, it charged at great speed towards Cal. Flames spilled from its
mouth like an angry, erupting volcano!

Cal just about managed to elude the dragon but knew he only had seconds to find some
respite. He scurried around the corner to find himself back at the opening of the cave
again. Suddenly, he found a little hollow that seemed just the right size for him to hide
in. Crouching down and holding his breath for the second time that day, Cal leapt into it
quickly. With outstretched wings and blazing nostrils, the dragon swooped down to follow
Cal but the hole was way too small for it to get through.

Unexpectedly, Cal found himself back in his bright kitchen once again. ‘Maybe being right
here suits me just fine’, Cal thought to himself, before noticing a strange burning smell and
bizarre scorch marks all around the window frame…
