At the Southwest Jiaotong University, in the School of Architecture and design, the
autors of this article showed how bamboo steel is composed of recyclable sinocalamus
affinis with rich resources in China, environmentally friendly phenolic resin and moisture.
The high-performance multi-purpose bamboo-based fiber composite processed with
multiple technologies does not require special care and maintenance in use. Based on
good elasticity and toughness, high intensity, high weather fastness, fire resistance,
carbon-negative environmental protection and long service life of bamboo steel, this paper
starts from the feasibility of its application to bicycle design and designs panda bamboo
steel bicycle in combination with the principle of bionic design. This paper analyzes design
elements of panda bamboo steel bicycle and further illustrates its realizability,
practicability, vitality and feature of Sichuan culture through the verification of model test
program and analysis on model dimension.

In this paper the autor share many important facts about the recycling bikes, from
the bike in itself, talking about how the bike is one of the most popular modes of
transportation and its rising popularity, going by the “E-bikes” and how they have
been rising in many European countries and showinf us how due to their electrical
assistance, e-bikes could increase the number of people cycling and the potential
uses of cycling, to the resesign potencial, the bikes are designed towards
audiences that cares more about the environment, but the manufacturing
processes have remained somewhat traditional, which reveals many inefficiencies
when compared to current manufacturing trends while bike designs are made from
a wide variety of materials and shapes that are adapted to the needs of each user,
improvements can be made. Using new production methods, with less resources
can achieve the same or better results, such as additive manufacturing, the use of
renewable materials, and the generative design process.

Recent advancements in open source self-replicating rapid prototypers (RepRap)

have radically reduced costs of 3-D printing. The cost of additive manufacturing
enables distributed manufacturing of open source appropriate technologies (OSAT)
to assist in sustainable development. In order to investigate this potential, this
study explores the use of RepRap 3-D printers to fabricate widely used Black
Mamba pedals in the developing world. A CAD model of the pedal was created
using parametric open source software (FreeCAD) to enable future customisation.
Then polylactic acid, a biodegradable and recyclable bioplastic, was selected
among the various commercial 3-D printable materials, based on strength and
cost. The pedal
was tested following the CEN (European Committee for Standardisation) standards
for Racing bicycles for static strength, impact, and dynamic durability. The results
show the pedals meet the CEN standards and can be used on bicycles. The 3-D
printed pedals are significantly lighter tan the stock pedals used on the Black
Mamba, which provides a performance enhancement, while reducing the cost of
raw PLA or using recycled materials, which assists in reducing bicycle costs. For a
return on investment, other bicycle parts could also be manufactured using 3-D
printers, hence this model of distributed manufacturing of OSAT may be technically
and economically appropriate through much of the Global South.
