G
reg is a po rter at the Shepton H otel in N ew York.
A fter w ork, he alw ays goes for a coffee across the
street. A girl is sittin g in the coffee shop, near the window.
‘ It’s her a g a in !’ thinks G reg. ‘Sh e’s here every aftern oon.
I’m go in g to say h ello.’
G reg goes into the coffee sh op and gets a coffee. Then
he goes across to the girl’s table.
‘ H i!’ he says. ‘I’m G reg. C an I sit with you?’

‘ O K ,’ she says. ‘ I’ m C a ssie .’
‘I com e here for a coffee every day after w o rk ,’ says
G reg. ‘I’m a po rter at the Shepton H o te l.’ H e sm iles.
‘You have beau tifu l green eyes.’
‘H ave I?’ she says. She d o esn ’t sm ile.
‘Is som ething w rong, C a ssie ?’ he ask s. ‘You d o n ’t look
very happy.’
‘It - it’s n oth in g,’ she says.
‘Tell m e,’ says G reg. ‘M aybe I can help?’

‘Well . . she begins.


‘ G o o n ,’ says Greg.
‘M y stepfather is staying at the Shepton H o te l,’ she
says. ‘H e has my sketch books. I’ m an artist. W hen I
ask him to give them to me he says, “ N o . I want you
to com e b ack hom e to B o sto n .” But I d o n ’t w ant to go
back to B oston . H e ’s not nice.’

‘H ow lon g is he goin g to be at the h o tel?’ ask s G reg.


‘Two m ore d ay s,’ says C assie. ‘H e ’s in room 7 2 4 .’
‘M ayb e I can get the sketch b o o k s for yo u ,’ says G reg.
‘M aybe I can get into his ro o m .’
‘ C an you?’ she says.
‘M eet me here tom orrow aftern oon at 4 .3 0 ,’ says
G reg.
‘ O K , thank y o u !’ says C assie. ‘T h an k you very m u ch .’
She lo ok s at her watch. ‘I’ve got to go now. See you
tom orrow .’

When C assie gets b ack to her hotel roo m , she m akes a
telephone call.
‘H e llo ,’ she says. ‘It’s me. It’s O K , the b o y ’s go in g to
do it . . . Yes, I ’m go in g to get them from him tom orrow
aftern oon . . . O K , I can meet you there the m orn ing
after, at 10am . D o n ’t forget to bring the m oney - two
th ousan d d o lla rs.’

N ex t m orning, G reg arrives at w ork early. H e goes to find


room 724.
‘ I have to w ait for C a ssie ’s stepfather to go o u t,’ he
thinks. ‘I d o n ’t know his nam e, but it d o esn ’t m atter.’
G reg w atches the d o o r o f room 724. H e sees the girl
com e to clean the room s.
Som e m inutes later, a m an com es ou t o f room 724.
‘T h at m ust be C a ssie ’s stepfath er!’ thinks G reg.

H e w aits for the m an to leave, and for the cleaning girl to
go into room 724.
‘ I need to lo ok in the ro o m ,’ he thinks.
G reg w aits for the girl to leave the bedroom , then he
goes into the room and begins to lo ok for the sketch
books.
‘I m ust be q u ic k ,’ he thinks. ‘W here are they?’

Suddenly, G reg sees the sketch b o o k s by the bed.


‘ G o t them !’ he thinks. H e begins to look at the
pictures. ‘Wow! C assie is a great artist! T hese are g o o d !’

G reg is leaving the room when he hears the cleaning


girl call out to him.
‘H ey !’ she says. ‘W hat are you doing? C om e b a c k !’
G reg does not stop.
G reg finishes work that aftern oon and leaves the hotel
through a d o o r in the next street. W hen he gets near the
front o f the hotel, he sees the m an from room 724.
‘T h a t’s him a g a in !’ thinks G reg. ‘T h a t’s C a ssie ’s
stepfath er.’
G reg w aits for the m an to go into the hotel, then he
goes to the coffee shop.

C assie is at the sam e table in the coffee shop.


G reg gets a coffee an d goes to sit with her.
‘I have th em ,’ he says, and he p u ts the sketch b o o k s
on the table.
‘ T h a t’s g rea t!’ says C assie. ‘H ow can I thank you,
G reg?’
‘You can m eet me later,’ he says. ‘A fter I go hom e and
change out o f my p o rter’s u n iform .’
‘I’ m sorry, G re g ,’ says C assie. ‘ I can ’t tonight. M aybe
tom orrow n igh t.’

‘ O K ,’ says G reg. ‘T om orrow night. We can get som ethin g
to eat, first.’
‘Yes, O K ,’ says C assie. ‘I have to go now, but m eet me
here tom orrow evening at six o ’c lo ck .’
C assie gets up, ready to leave.
‘D o n ’t forget your key,’ says G reg.
‘ O h - er - th an k s,’ says C assie. She takes it from him
quickly. ‘See you tom orrow .’

G reg is finishing his coffee when he sees his friend, M ike.
‘Y ou’re in trouble, G reg ,’ says M ike. ‘Ja k e R u sso ’s
sketch b o o k s are not in his room - roo m 724. And there
are C C T V pictures o f you com in g from that ro o m .’
‘Wh - who is Ja k e R u sso ?’ ask s G reg. Suddenly he’s
not feeling very well.
‘An a rtist,’ says M ike. ‘H is pictures sell for th ousan d s
o f dollars. A nd his sketch b oo k s sell for th o u san d s, to o .’

‘D o you have them ?’ ask s M ike.


‘ N o - er —a girl h as th em ,’ says G reg.
‘W hat girl?’ ask s M ike.
A girl with green eyes,’ says G reg. A nd he tells M ike
ab ou t C assie and her stepfather.
‘But it’s not tru e!’ says M ike, when G reg finishes
speaking. ‘Ja k e R u sso d oesn ’t have a wife or a
stepdaughter. You have to find that girl and get the
sketch b o o k s, G reg. A nd you have to do it before the
police find y o u !’

G reg w alks hom e to his one-room apartm en t.


‘H ow am I go in g to find her?’ he thinks. ‘She has
Ja k e R u sso ’s sketch b o o k s now, so sh e’s not goin g to
meet me again. Is she goin g to sell them for a lot o f
m oney?’
There is a police car in the street, n ext to G reg’s
apartm en t.
‘ O h, n o !’ he thinks. ‘T h ey ’re w aiting for me. I can ’t
get into my apartm en t now.’

T h at night, G reg sleeps on a train in the subway. But early
the next m orn ing . . .
‘Hey, you !’ says a m an. H e ’s the subw ay cleaner. ‘G et
up! You can ’t sleep here all d ay !’
‘ Sorry,’ says Greg.

People are arriving to get their trains now. O ne o f them


stop s and look s at a p h otograph in his new spaper — and
then at Greg.
‘It’s him ,’ thinks the m an. ‘It’s the young m an in the
n ew spaper ph otograph . T he police are lo ok in g for h im .’

‘I have to get ou t o f here q u ickly!’ he thinks.

G reg runs.
‘S to p !’ calls the policem an .

‘I have to get out o f this u n iform ,’ thinks G reg. ‘People


know Pm the porter. M aybe M ike can give me som ething
different to w ear.’

W hen he gets to M ik e’s apartm en t, M ike opens


the door. ‘I need som ethin g to w ear,’ G reg tells him.
‘I can ’t go b ack to my apartm en t. M y p ictu re’s in the
new spaper, and — ’
‘Yes, I know,’ says M ike. ‘It’s O K . C om e in .’

‘W here’s the girl?’ ask s M ike. ‘D o you k now ?’


‘N o ,’ says G reg.
‘W hat can you rem em ber ab o u t her?’ says M ike.
‘T here m ust be som ethin g to help you find her.’
‘Y es!’ G reg says, suddenly. ‘H er key! A key to a room
in the D olphin H otel! It’s a sm all, cheap hotel near 42nd
Street. She m ust be staying there. W hat’s the tim e?’
‘ N early nine o ’clo ck ,’ says M ike.
‘M aybe sh e’s there now,’ says G reg. ‘I have to go!
T h an k s, M ik e .’

Twenty m inutes later, G reg is near the D olphin H otel.
‘A m I too la te?’ he thinks.
Suddenly, G reg sees C assie com e ou t o f the hotel.
‘C a ssie !’ he calls. ‘Wait! I have to talk to you !’
C assie sees him , but she d o esn ’t stop. There is a car
w aiting for her. She says som ethin g to the driver and
gets into it quickly.

‘ O h, n o !’ says G reg.
‘Pier 83,’ says an old m an in the street.
G reg lo o k s at him. ‘W hat?’
‘T he girl is goin g to Pier 83, W est 42nd Street, for the
Circle Line b o a t,’ says the old m an.
G reg sm iles. ‘T h a n k s!’ he says. And he begins to run.

G reg runs all the way to Pier 83. People are getting on to
the b oat, and he gets a ticket.

O n the b o at, G reg lo ok s for C assie. But a w om an


with a new spaper is lo ok in g at him.
‘It’s the young m an in the p ictu re!’ she tells the m an
with her. ‘ C all the police, E d d ie.’
T he m an gets his ph on e and calls the police.

Som e tim e later, G reg sees C assie. She is talk in g to a m an.


But G reg does not see two policem en get on the b o at.
They quickly find G reg. ‘W here are Ja k e R u sso ’s
sketch b o o k s?’ the first policem an ask s him.
‘I d o n ’t have th em !’ says G reg. ‘You d o n ’t w ant me!
You want her! She has the sketch b o o k s.’
‘Hey, look! H e ’s righ t,’ says the second policem an .

T he tw o policem en move quickly to C assie and the man.
‘I d o n ’t u n d erstan d ,’ says C assie. ‘H ow . . . ?’
‘T he two o f you are com in g w ith u s,’ says one o f the
policem en. ‘Y ou’re in tro u ble.’

Later, G reg and a policem an take the sketch b oo k s


b ack to the hotel. Ja k e R u sso is very happy to see them
again.
‘I’m sorry, M r R u sso ,’ says G reg, and tells him
everything.
‘It’s O K ,’ says the artist, sm iling. ‘But stay away from
girls with beautiful green eyes!’
