Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was convicted on Monday


by an accountability court in the Al Azizia reference and
sentenced to seven years in jail. He has been acquitted in the
Flagship reference.
A $25 million fine has also been imposed on him. He has been
taken into custody by NAB. His legal team have asked the court
to send him to Lahore instead of the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Judge Arshad Malik allowed Nawaz to be shifted to the Kot


Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. However, he will spend the night at
Adiala.

July 28, 2017
The Supreme Court disqualifies former prime minister Nawaz
Sharif as a member of parliament and deems him ‘dishonest’ for
failing to declare his assets from Capital FZE in the UAE. The
court gives NAB six weeks to file references against Nawaz
Sharif and his family.
September 8, 2017
NAB files three references against Nawaz and his family and one
against former finance minister Ishaq Dar. The references
include the Sharif family’s Avenfield properties, the Al Azizia
Steel Mills and Hill Metal Company, Jeddah, and Flagship
Investment Limited and 15 other companies owned by the
family.

September 14, 2017


The trial against the Sharif family commences in an
accountability court.

Accountability Judge-I Mohammad Bashir accepts NAB’s plea


to declare Hussain and Hasan Nawaz proclaimed offenders and
separates their proceedings in the three references.

Nawaz, who was in the UK at the time, was indicted in the three
references along with sons Hussain and Hasan, daughter
Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar.

November 8, 2017
An accountability court formally indicts Nawaz in three
references. The court rejects their plea seeking the clubbing of
all three corruption references together.
December 4, 2017
Hasan and Hussain are declared proclaimed offenders and NAB
is ordered to start the process of confiscating their assets.
March 8, 2018
Judge Mohammad Bashir gets a three-year extension in his
tenure. The president approved his extension till March 21,
2021.

Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer Khawaja Harris recuses himself from
representing Nawaz only to take a U-turn a few days later.
July 6, 2018
Nawaz is awarded 10 years in prison and Maryam Nawaz is
awarded seven in the Avenfield case. Maryam’s husband
Captain (retd) Safdar is awarded one year. They get shifted to
Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.

Nawaz’s lawyer says that Judge Mohammad Bashir should
recuse himself from hearing the other two references. He
pointed out that the evidence of the Al Azizia reference was
similar to that of the Avenfield reference.

the transfer of remaining two references to another judge.

October 5, 2018
The NAB director general and a member of the Panama joint
investigation team meet the two judges of accountability court.
The meeting was reportedly held in the chambers of Judge
Arshad Malik. Harris questioned the motive behind it during a
court hearing.
November 22, 2018
Nawaz starts recording his statement in the Al Aziza reference.
He remarked that NAB failed to prove that he is the owner of
the steel mills. He declined to present evidence in his favour.
December 13, 2018
Khawaja Harris completes his final arguments in the Al Azizia
and Hill Metal Establishment reference.

reference.
December 19, 2018
An accountability court reserves the verdict in the references
against the former prime minister. The verdict will be
announced on December 24, the court said.

After the verdict was reserved, Nawaz came up to the rostrum


and said that this is the 71st time he has appeared before the
court. “Is this my last appearance?” he asked. “It is your last
appearance,” the judge replied.

“My conscience is clear,” the former PM said, adding that, “I
don’t know why I have been treated this way.” All the
proceedings that were conducted in front of me were based on
assumptions, he said. Addressing the judge, Nawaz said, “You
are a judge, I hope you will ensure justice is served.”
December 21, 2018
An accountability court allows Nawaz Sharif to submit new
documents in the Flagship reference. NAB’s objections have
been set aside and the court will admit the new documents. The
documents relate to Hassan Nawaz’s assets. The court said that
in order to provide complete justice, documents are allowed to
be presented.
December 24, 2018
Judge Arshad Malik convicts Nawaz in Al Azizia reference and
acquits him in Flagship Investment reference. He has been
sentenced to prison for seven years.
