(a) Show that center of pressure of an inclined immersed surface always lies below the center of gravity of
the surface. (10 marks)
(b) A hollow circular plate of 3m external and 1m internal diameter is immersed vertically in water, such that
the center of the plate is 6m deep from the water surface. Calculate total pressure and depth of center of
pressure. (10 marks)

Questions 2 1 1 C2,C4 20 40%

(a) Derive an expression for metacentric height of a floating body by using experimental method. (10 marks)
(b) A rectangular pontoon of 5m long, 3m wide and 1.2m deep is immersed 0.8m in sea water. If the density
of the sea water is 10kN/m3, find the metacentric height of the pontoon. (10 marks)

Questions 3 1 1 C2,C4 20 40%

(a) First derive Euler’s Equation of motion of a fluid and then derive Bernoulli’s equation from it. (10 marks)

(b) A 320mm x 160mm venturi meter is provided in a vertical pipeline carrying oil of specific gravity 0.9, the
flow being upwards. The difference in elevations of the throat section and entrance section of the venturi
meter is 300mm. The differential U-tube mercury manometer shows a gauge difference of 250mm.
Calculate discharge of the oil and pressure difference between the entrance and throat section. Take
coefficient of meter as 0.96 and specific gravity of mercury as 13.6. (10 marks)
