Syllabus
This unit presents a systems approach to the principles, design and application of the major surface and
underground mining methods together with the associated equipment, services and infrastructure. The aim of this
unit is to provide students with the capability to select the appropriate mining method, together with its
associated equipment, services and infrastructure, for a given deposit. The unit covers principles of systems
engineering, mine services and infrastructure, surface mining methods (method selection, strip mining, open-pit
mining, high-wall mining, solution mining, surface miners and other mining methods), and underground mining
methods (mine access and development, long-wall coal mining, thick-seam coal mining, bord and pillar coal
mining, underground metalliferous mining method selection, room and pillar mining, cut and fill mining, sublevel
stoping, narrow vein mining, caving methods).
Introduction
This unit presents a systems approach to the principles, design and application of the major surface and underground mining
methods and the associated equipment, services and infrastructure. This unit aims to provide students with the capability to
select the appropriate mining method and its associated equipment, services and infrastructure for a given deposit. The unit
covers mine services and infrastructure, surface mining methods (method selection, strip mining, open-pit mining, haul road
design and other small-scale mining methods), and underground mining methods (mine access and development, sublevel
stoping, sublevel caving, block caving, cut and fill mining, long-wall mining, and room and pillar mining).

Learning Activities
At WASM, we are committed to providing real-world, authentic learning activities that prepare you as a future
mining professional. At Curtin, we use work-integrated learning (WIL) to describe many of these experiences.
To deliver on our commitment, every effort has been made to design some of this unit’s learning activities in
collaboration with our industry and community partners. More specifically, during weeks 4 and 8 many of these
experiences have been designed to yield maximum student benefit through face-to-face interaction with these
(and other) partners. Thus, we strongly recommend that you attend (in person) as many of these as possible to
connect with, learn from, and build long-lasting relationships with them.
Some of this unit’s learning activities may also benefit your broader studies at Curtin. Attendance at co-curricular
learning experiences is also highly encouraged, as is attendance at learning activities designed for other WASM
units (where places are available).

Links to these resources are available in Blackboard Reading List. Lectures and workshops will be prepared mainly
from these texts. For each lecture, students will be informed about the pages in a particular text for future
reference and detailed study. The unit materials, including Lecture and Workshop PDFs, hand-written whiteboard
notes, i-Lectures and concept videos, will be regularly posted on the BLACKBOARD. Pre-recorded concept videos
will be available as preparation tasks (prior to class activities) to focus on relevant computations or problems
during class.
Important Note: Given that iLectures are recorded remotely from Bentley Campus, the quality of iLectures is

1. Case Study (40%; Surface Mining = 20% and Underground Mining = 20%)
This assessment is divided into surface and underground mining methods. The students will work on this
assessment individually. Both surface and underground mining sections require separate submissions
through Blackboard. The assessment submission requirements are provided in the Problem Statement
available under Assessments in Blackboard. The surface and underground mining sections constitute a
number of problems on various topics. Each problem is a case with accurate data sets expecting students
to analyse the situation and apply design, production, and equipment selection calculation steps to solve
the case.

2. Project/Report (40%)
Project or Report is an individual assignment, and it provides an opportunity to analyse, discuss and offer
solutions to critical issues or problems in surface and underground mining operations. The students will
address diverse problems and suggest improvements based on their learning from various available
literature on the surface and underground mining techniques. In addition, this assignment may allow an
opportunity to investigate the application of emerging technologies in surface and underground mining.
In addition, 5% (out of 40%) of the marks will be allocated to students' participation in the training and
practice (exercise) during intensive Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activities, mine site visits and workshops
organised (week 4 or 8). However, this allocation may change owing to the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

3. Test (20%)
There will be an eTest conducted through Blackboard. However, students will be required to ensure
physical presence. A member of the academic staff team will supervise/invigilate the test. This test will be
comprehensive, i.e., it will cover all lectures, tutorials/workshops and any content discussed during the
semester. It will include multiple choice and computations based on surface and underground mining
systems. The structure of the test as well as the exact date and time (in week 13), will be shared with
students early in the semester.

Pass requirements
To pass this unit you must earn at least 50% overall mark aggregated over Case Study (40%), Report (40%)
and Test (20%).
Assessment Moderation
Pre-marking moderation
Mr. Anvar Mammadli will support the assesment moderations for this unit. He will review all assessments and
possible solutions as part of pre-marking moderation. The assessment marking details will be available within the
problem statement for each assessment.
Late assessment
Where the submission of a late assessment is permitted, late penalties will be consistently applied in this unit.
Where a late assessment is permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the Assessment
Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. For assessment items submitted within the first 24 hours after the due date/time, students will be penalised
by a deduction of 5% of the total marks allocated for the assessment task;
2. For each additional 24 hour period commenced an additional penalty of 10% of the total marks allocated
for the assessment item will be deducted; and
3. Assessment items submitted more than 168 hours late (7 calendar days) will receive a mark of zero.
Where late assessment is NOT permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the
Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will receive a mark of zero.
Assessment extension
Where an application for an assessment extension is permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit (refer to
the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):
1. A student who is unable to complete an assessment item by/on the due date/time as a result of exceptional
circumstances beyond the student’s control, may apply for an assessment extension on the Assessment
Extension Application Form as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. The form is available on the Forms
page at https://students.curtin.edu.au/essentials/forms-documents/forms/ and also within the student's
OASIS (My Studies tab – Quick Forms) account.
2. The student will be expected to submit their application for an Assessment Extension with supporting
documentation via the online form.
3. Timely submission of this information supports the assessment process. For applications that are declined,
delayed submission may have significant ramifications on the possible marks awarded.
4. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the due date/time of the assessment item
where the student is able to provide a verifiable explanation as to why they were not able to submit the
application prior to the assessment due date/time
Where an application for an assessment extension is NOT permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit
(refer to the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):
1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will be subject to late penalties or receive a mark of
zero depending on the unit permitting late assessment submissions.
Deferred assessments
If your results show that you have been granted a deferred assessment you should immediately check OASIS for
details.
Deferred examinations/tests will be held from 10/07/2023 to 21/07/2023 . Notification to students will be made
after the Board of Examiners’ meeting via the Official Communications Channel (OCC) in OASIS.
Further assessment
Further assessments, if granted by the Board of Examiners, will be held between 10/07/2023 and 21/07/2023 .
Notification to students will be made after the Board of Examiners meeting via the Official Communications

It is the responsibility of the student to be available to complete the requirements of a further assessment. If your
results show that you have been granted a further assessment you should immediately check OASIS for details.
