Unit IV: CONTROL WEEDS

Self-Check 1
Give 5 bad effects of having weeds near your horticultural crops
 It reduced yield
 It contaminates crop yield which result to poor quality of the crop
 It harbors pest and diseases
 Weeds makes the farm operation more difficult
 They affect plant growth

Self-Check 2
• Give 3 examples of cultural method to control weeds
1. Field preparation
The land must be kept clear of weeds. Weeds shouldn't be permitted to grow.
This helps to reduce the growth of the weed seed population.
2. Summer tillage
It is one of the most effective cultural techniques for controlling the spread of
perennial weeds in crop cultivation. Prior to planting, the first round of tillage
should promote clod development. These clods, which contain weed propagules,
dry out and become desiccated. The shriveled weeds should be exposed to the
scorching sun by breaking the clods into smaller pieces during subsequent tillage
operations.
3. Growing of inter-crops
Intercropping offers the chance to use crops as weed control instruments since it
suppresses weeds more effectively than solitary cropping. Green gram and
soybean are two short-duration pulses that efficiently smother weeds without
lowering the production of the primary crop.

Self-Check 3
• Choose one method that you think is easy to use to control weeds and explain why
you choose that method.
Cultural method is one of the easiest ways to control weeds because it is
accessible and acceptable in variety of place and to small and larger number of
farmers. In addition to that it is beneficial among other methods since it does not
utilize chemical products and practices thus, it is ecologically sound.
Self-Check 4
Identify the type of weeds in the following pictures.

Self-Check 5
• In 1 paragraph give your own thoughts on how to prevent pest, diseases and
threats in your horticultural crops.

The initial state in preventing pest and diseases is to build a healthy soil
in that way the nutrients that the plants needs are sufficient. Other than that,
having a healthy soil means that there Is a low percentage that the soil borne
viruses or bacteria will be live in it. Other than that, planting a variety of crops
and changing the crop patterns will helps us to prevent such diseases since
there is a possibility that other plants are resistance to common pest and
diseases. Additional ways to control it are plant at the appropriate period to
avoid attracting pests and illnesses. Lastly, water your plants from below so
the disease that lives in the soil will not splash on the plants.
