Siberut Aggregated Biomass Gasification Power Plant (SABPP) Project

Dates (start/end) : Phase 1: Ensuring Security of Feedstock through bamboo Propogation and Harvest
for a Biofuel Project in Siberut, Kab. Mentawai 21 October – 30 November 2016

Description of project:
PT Clean Power Indonesia will develop biomass-based energy in a small village on Siberut Island, Mentawai
regency, West Sumatra. The project undertakes piloting of innovative gasification technologies and power
plants using bamboo. Perhaps the greatest challenge facing implementation of community-based biomass
energy projects is ensuring security of feedstock. The project proposes using introduced fast-growing bamboo
species as well as native bamboo found at the project sites. However, issues of feedstock security are not
limited to the bio-geographical questions nor is supply of feedstock to a project not merely an arithmetic question
of growing feedstock in sufficient quantities. In this community-centered operation on Siberut Island, social
issues are at the heart of feedstock security. Calculation of sufficient supply of feedstock will depend on the
social composition of the community, how they work together and the social capital they have, the condition of

geographic location of the land which they own, and the type of management and land capacity for feedstock
production.

energy in remote villages in Siberut Island, Mentawai Islands District, West Sumatra. Three villages targeted in
this project are Madobag and Matotonan Villages in South Siberut District, Saliguma Village in Central Siberut.
Bamboo grows in the three villages, but from the analysis of raw material needs for the plant states still less if
only using raw materials from the existing bamboo. Therefore, it is necessary to plant and cultivate bamboo to
provide sufficient and sustainable power generation. PT Ekologika Consultants got the task to plant bamboo on
the land that has been set by the group of bamboo growers in the three villages.
