This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the problem,

different industries that manufacture paint, adhesive, pesticide, and household cleaners

One of the most common and abundant naturally occurring scaffold material is
the collagen. According to Parviz, J. (2010) in the article entitled “High Yield
Orthopaedics”, the word collagen means “ glue producer” that came from the Greek
word ‘kolla’, meaning ‘glue’. Collagen can be extracted from various tissues such as
tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues and can be obtained by boiling the
skin and sinews of horses and other animals. Collagen is the main protein of connective
tissue in animals and is the most abundant protein in mammals, making up about 25%
protein that contains specific amino acids such as Glycine, Proline, Hydroxyproline, and
Arginine. Collagen makes up approximately 30% of the proteins within the body that can
be found in bones, tendons, and ligaments. It is also present in all the smooth muscle
tissues, blood vessels digestive tract, heart, gallbladder, kidneys, and bladder holding
the cells and tissues together. Collagen microscopically occurs in elongated fibrils. It is
mostly found in fibrous tissues such as tendon, ligament, and skin, and is also abundant
in cornea, bone, blood vessels, cartilage, intervertebral disc, and the digestive tract.

some of that type I collagen which is the main component in tendon, bone and skin
tissue, type II collagen is present in the cartilage and the conjunctiva of the eye and the
type III collagen is found in blood vessels. In the process of extraction, the materials
used to produce collagen were distilled water, NaOH, and acetic acid. The collagen
isolation process with the hydro-extraction method consists of three stages, namely pre-
treatment with NaOH solution, hydrolysis with the acetic acid solution, and extraction
The first stage is the process of pre-treatment with NaOH solution aimed at
eliminating non-collagen proteins and other impurities such as fats, minerals, pigments,
and odors. The second stage was hydrolysis with a solution of acetic acid (CH3COOH)
to change the structure of collagen fibresto to facilitate the extraction process. The third
stage was extraction by a hydro-extraction method. The extraction result was in the form
of a collagen solution, then the solution was dried with a freeze dryer to obtain dry

contribution for the shoe industries in Marikina City by making a shoe adhesive that is

The study of De Almeida, P. F., et. Al. (2012), entitled “Collagen extraction from
chicken feet for jelly production “, showed that the collagen extract from chicken feet
can be alternative ingredients to make jellies for the food industry. The previous
researchers used raw materials from animals to make a jelly ingredient to lessen the
waste in meat industries. The previous study focuses on the evaluation of five attributes:
the appearance, flavor, aroma, texture, and willingness to consume the product. This
study evaluated the product using the Sensory-analysis method wherein they measure
and analyze human reactions perceived by sense of smell, sight, taste touch, and
hearing.
Similarly, the present study also utilizes the use of collagen extract from chicken
feet as the main ingredient. However, the previous study used this ingredient for jelly
production while the present study used this raw material in making shoe adhesive.
Also, the present study uses a descriptive-evaluative method, which involves interviews
and questionnaires to gather data that is different from the previous study.

that, it supports the present research to pursue making adhesive that is organic, natural,

skin, scales, bones, and fins as the main source of collagen while the present study
used chicken feet. Also, the study of Fehng focuses only on the extraction of collagen
and suggested its feasibility for making adhesives. In the present study, there is an

Sources of Data
The sources of data in this study were gathered from 3 groups of respondents in
at Barangay Tumana Conception 1, Marikina City during the first quarter of the
academic year 2020. The primary data are obtained using Purposive Quota Sampling, it
is a non- probability sampling that is selected based on the characteristics of the given
population
and the objective of the study. It is also known as selective or Subjective Sampling.
The Research instrument used in the study is adopted and modified from the study
of Baluyot, et. Al., (2019), entitled” Multipurpose Liquid adhesive using melted
polystyrene in orange (Citrus Sinensis). The survey checklist is consisting of two parts,
the profile of the respondents and the evaluation part. The first part includes the name
of the respondents(optional), the gender, age, and the social group where they belong.
In the second part, which is the evaluation part, it includes the checklist with four criteria
stability. The evaluation of three groups of respondents was measured on a Likert scale,
4- strongly agree, 3-agree, 2-disagree, and 1-strongly disagree. At the bottom part of
the questionnaire, the researchers include the comments and suggestions of the
respondents for further improvement of the study. The researchers asked an approval
letter for the process and validity of the research and signed it to the SHS Principal of
Marikina Polytechnic College. Thereafter, the formal letter for the Content and Construct
The Data were gathered through validated survey questionnaires. The researchers
surveyed the area of Baranggay Tumana Concepcion 1, Marikina City, and chose 15
potential targets within every three groups of respondents, which are the Shoe
Manufacturers, Shoe Sellers, and Consumers. Each one of the respondents was given
a set of questionnaires and has an opportunity to critique the developed shoe adhesive
by giving them a sample product. The questionnaire has 3 parts, and the last part is the
comments and suggestions for the respondents which merely give ideas to the
researchers on how to improve the developed product. Thereafter, the data gathered
