THE EFFECTIVENESS OF

COCONUT WATER AS AN
ALTERNATIVE LIQUID
FERTILIZER FOR PECHAY
GROWTH AND PRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Chemical fertilizers have helped
farmers and gardeners increase
agricultural yield. Chemical
fertilizers have a function in
increasing plant nutrients in
adverse weather conditions or
when plants require more
nutrients, but they also have a
number of negative side effects.
Waterway pollution, chemical burn to crops,
increased air pollution, acidification of the soil, and
mineral depletion of the soil are just a few of the
problem that chemical fertilizers can create.
According to the
National Economic and
Development Authority
(NEDA), 37% of the total
water pollution originates
from agricultural
practices, which include
animal waste and
fertilizer and pesticide
runoff.
For example, a recent analysis by Greenpeace of groundwater in Benguet and Bulacan
Provinces found that 30% of the tested artesian wells had nitrates levels above the World
Health Organization (WHO) drinking water safety limit. Other studies have also found
high levels of nitrates around sweet pepper farms in the Manguang area in Ilocos Norte.
However, there are proven alternatives
to this expensive agriculture system:
farmers are already fertilizing soils and
protecting crops with organic and
sustainable techniques that work with
nature, not against it, and which can
provide food for all (Pretty et al. 2003,
Badgley et al. 2007).
Coconut water is made from the clear liquid inside green coconuts.

Pechay, scientifically known as Brassica rapa is a popular
and a kind of vegetable that grows well in the Philippines

Ideally, it is eaten raw to prevent possible loss

of its nutritional value when heated. It is an
excellent source of income and a hobby even
for limited space adopting the very popular
vertical gardening with the use of recycled
containers as potting media. Probably this
vegetable is the fastest to grow. As you can start
harvesting pechay in more or less 30 days.
Organic farming
produces nutrient
rich, fertile soil
which nourishes the
plants. Keeping
chemicals off the
land protects water
quality and wild life
The Philippines, through
Republic Act 10068 aims
to strengthen the state’s
policy to promote,
propagate, develop further
and implement the practice
of organic agriculture.
Application of organic fertilizers is one of the favored methods of
rejuvenating depleted soils and sustaining fertility levels. In mature soils,
crops respond more to the addition of organic fertilizers than of chemicals.
(PCARRD, 2006) Successive cropping of pechay grown in pots with
vermicompost and ordinary garden soil as medium in different combinations
favored the growth and development of pechay and gave higher income.
Organic practices help keep our water supply clean of run-off from
toxic and persistent chemicals. Moreover, by prohibiting the use of
petroleum-based fertilizers and absorbing carbon dioxide from the air,
organic agriculture helps to reduce our carbon footprint and combat
climate change.

Scope and Delimitations
• The study generally
focuses on
determining The
Effectiveness of an
Organic Fertilizer
made of coconut
water.

In this study, the researchers will to provide an
Alternative Organic Liquid fertilizer that will be beneficial to
the following:

To the users, this study will benefit them in terms of
budget saving. The product will be accessible since the raw
Significance materials specially coconut trees are abundant in the locality,
of and also can be called DIY product.
To the researchers, this study will procure
the supplementary knowledge and background regarding the
Study effectiveness of coconut water as an alternative organic liquid
fertilizer for pechay growth and production.
To the learners and community, this study will enhance
their knowledge on the importance and potential of coconut
water and its uses.
To the future researchers, this study could serve as a
guide for them in case they would be conducting the same
study and that this could contribute useful information to
them.
