HOW TO CREATE AN
EFFECTIVE ENGLISH
LESSON PLAN

LESSON PLAN
Establish Your Focus

Before you do anything else while writing a lesson plan, consider

the lesson's main objective. Think about it:

What do I hope to achieve with this lesson?

At the conclusion of this class, what do I want my students to know

about English?

What are the results of learning?

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
Plan a Smashing Introduction
I suggest beginning each lesson with a fun warm-up
exercise.

There are several different categories of

recommended warm-up exercises. You may start by
playing a quick game based on the subject. For
instance, the students could play a few games of
Clothing Pictionary if you're in the middle of a
chapter about English clothing terminology.

How to Teach English: Asking a question in English

could start a brief class discussion. Alternately, you
may show the students a pertinent English-
language video clip from TED Talks, FluentU, or
YouTube.

Whichever approach you decide on, make sure it is

relevant to the lesson's subject so that your pupils
begin to think about it right away.

Create tasks and exercises that make use of

various skill sets.
Start the lesson when the class has warmed up.
Make sure that each assignment is created to test a
distinct set of English language abilities, including
vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, and
speaking.

You might not need to fit all five skill sets into one
class hour if your course is brief. Feel free to stretch
them out over a few class periods in this situation.

Plan Partner or Group Assignments

Find ways for your pupils to collaborate after the

lesson's main section. Although pair or group work
isn't required for every lesson, it can be a terrific
approach to make sure your students are getting
speaking practice in English language lessons.

Simply asking students to team up and share what

they wrote in class with their partner can be
sufficient. or to talk about issues surrounding the
lesson's subject.

If you're stuck for group project suggestions, keep it

straightforward and ask your students to pair up
and read each other their written work from class.
Alternately, divide the participants into groups and
give each group three questions to explore in depth.

Create an assessment

Spend some time towards the conclusion of the

session or unit making sure that the pupils have
understood the topic completely.

Quizzes, tests, projects, and presentations are all

acceptable forms of evaluation. Another option is to
simply set aside some time at the end of the lesson
for a group discussion during which you ask them
questions in English to gauge their understanding.

FOCUSE ON THE 5 MAIN
DOMAINS: VOCABULARY,
GRAMMAR, READING,
WRITING & SPEAKING

MAIN FOCUS

It's tremendously satisfying to teach English. You have the

opportunity to help students reach their goals by teaching them a
second language as a teacher.

Teaching is both enjoyable and difficult at the same time.

Fortunately, there are certain similar fundamental elements to
consider as you begin your journey regardless of whether you plan
to work with young learners or adults.

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
Vocabulary

Your kids must possess a broad working

vocabulary. It takes time to continually learn new
English terms, which can take years. Start off easy.
Make sure your kids are familiar with the
fundamentals, including colors, numbers,
everyday objects, relatives, and nations.

Ideally, each lesson you teach will incorporate

important terminology, and each and every class
will expose your pupils to fresh English
vocabulary. The first step to speaking English
fluently is learning vocabulary.

Grammar

Consider grammar to be the English language's

framework. To properly construct sentences using
the vocabulary they are learning, your students
must have a solid grasp of grammar.

Parts of speech like nouns (plural, singular,

countable, uncountable), adjectives, verbs (and all
the tenses!) and adverbs are important English
grammar concepts. After students have learned
these fundamentals, you can discuss subjects like
simple sentences versus compound sentences,
active voice versus passive voice, etc.

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
Reading

The ability to read fluently is one that ESL

students must master. They can increase
their vocabulary and learn good grammar
and phrasing through reading.

Reading comprehension and reading

performance are two things to consider
when teaching reading.

In order to demonstrate reading

comprehension, pupils must truly
comprehend what they have read. Verify
their comprehension of the text's overall
substance and its major vocabulary terms.
This can be accomplished through
conversation, inquiries, or worksheets
that provide pertinent English exercises
and questions.

Reading aloud to others helps students

understand the English language's
rhythms. This is referred to as reading
performance. They need to learn about
things like line breaks, where to breathe,
and the nuances between a comma and a
period. speed and

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
Writing

Learning how to write is a very valuable skill for

English language learners. They will require
writing proficiency in English if they choose to
study abroad or work for foreign businesses in
the future.

There are many ways to practice writing, and it

should be refined on a regular basis. Writing
abilities like those required for English essays,
reports, and emails are crucial for your pupils'
future success.

Speaking

The majority of ESL students will have been

exposed to English through native-speaking
English teachers and textbooks. The majority of
the time, reading and writing assignments in
their English education will have emphasized
vocabulary and grammar. These are crucial
abilities that lay the groundwork for the following
step, speaking.

The most significant skill you can teach your

pupils as a native English speaker is probably how
to talk. Although it can take years to become
fluent in English with excellent pronunciation
and natural phrasing, students must be aware of
how to behave in everyday English discussions.

A WELL-THOUGHT-OUT
STRATEGY FOR GETTING
STUDENTS WHERE THEY NEED
TO GO

POINTS
Once you have a good idea of where your students are, you can start
planning how to get them where they need to go.

You will most likely have some goals set by your school or district,
as well as some goals set by yourself. In either case, you should sit
down with your students, discuss the goals with them, and solicit
their feedback.

STUDENTS ARE MORE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR

LEARNING WHEN THEY BELIEVE THEY HAVE A SAY IN
IT.

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
You can set objectives for the entire class
if the majority of your learners are
working at a comparable level.

You might opt to divide your class into

groups based on English proficiency if the
students' levels are wildly dissimilar.
Then, set objectives for each group.

By assigning the entire class the duty of assisting

each student in achieving the objectives, you may
foster a sense of community in the classroom.
Everyone collaborates. Everyone aids one
another. Everyone must be represented.

CREATE "I CAN" STATEMENTS FOR YOUR

GOALS.

For illustration:

When the semester is over,

I can read at least 100 words per minute.

I am capable of using the appropriate subject-
verb agreement.
I'm able to read and comprehend materials
relating to Earth science.
I can use proper grammar to carry on a
simple chat with a friend.

HOW TO BE THE BEST
POSSIBLE ENGLISH
TEACHER

TIPS

There are a plethora of different English instructor kinds and

approaches available. You'll determine what kind of ESL teacher
you want to be eventually, but in the interim, consider the following
advice for getting started.

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
Encourage others
It's critical for you to maintain a good
outlook and to be supportive of your
students, even when they are having
difficulties.

Students can grow and learn through

constructive criticism and feedback, and it
fosters a positive and secure learning
atmosphere.

Invest in Your Resources

Online, there are a ton of fantastic books,
movies, podcasts, lesson plans, and other
ESL resources! Utilize all of your options.

Be Fun
But try not to be too silly. Knowing
where to draw the line is crucial!

You want to interact with your pupils

and keep the class conversation going
while maintaining their respect.

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
Keep in mind that each student is
unique.

We must stress this again and again.

Your pupils are all distinct persons.

They could pick things up at various
rates and in various ways. I advise you
to mix up your English lesson plans for
these and other reasons. This gives
every type of learner the opportunity to
excel.

While a more outgoing student would

prefer to give a speech, a quiet,
reserved student might be able to
express themselves more well in an
essay. Of course, all students must take
part in each activity, but you shouldn't
only highlight activities designed for a
particular type of learner.

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
Avoid lying
Normally, I would assume that this is
self-evident. However, you could feel
under pressure to be an expert in
everything as an English teacher,
particularly if you also teach ESL and
English culture.

However, that is not a reasonable

expectation.

Be honest with students if you can't

answer their questions with absolute
certainty. A student might inquire, "Do
they say soda or pop in New Jersey?
"Just be honest; you don't chance to
know off the top of your head.

I suggest answering with anything along

those lines, " What a terrific question,
I'm not sure, you know. I'll follow up
with you after tomorrow's lesson."

You are simply human, just like your

students. It's ok that you simply do not
know everything. Go online after class
to find a solution, then update your
students the following day.

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
Always prepare a fallback lesson
You need to be ready for anything and
everything as an ESL teacher. Maybe
just 30% of your students show up to
class because they have the flu. Due to
this, you cannot complete your original
lesson plan! Or perhaps the school's
internet is down.

Always have a backup lesson prepared

for these scenarios. This may be as easy
as having a game of Jeopardy available,
a word game packed away in your
purse, or a short narrative on hand.

Give schoolwork
Don't give classwork merely for the
purpose of giving them. Give students
just enough homework to maintain
their understanding of English.

This is crucial if you don't see your kids

on a daily basis. Learning the English
language involves regular practice and
exposure to the language.

BUILD TRUS WITH
PARENTS

BUILD TRUST

Some parents are wonderful and supportive, while others are not.

Most parents are good people who love their children more than
anything else in the world. Even with the best of parents, they don't
care nearly as much as they should.

WE KNOW HOW MUCH TIME AND EFFORT WE PUT INTO

OUR STUDENTS AS TEACHERS. OUR PARENTS,
HOWEVER, DO NOT.

TRUEINNOVATORS.COM
They are not permitted to observe our
classes. They only hear what their
children say after school, and children
do not always relay information fairly
and objectively.

This can be like a barrel of TNT waiting

for someone to light a match at the next
parent-teacher conference.

THIS SITUATION CAN BE COMPARED

TO A BARREL OF TNT WAITING FOR
SOMEONE TO LIGHT A MATCH AT THE
NEXT PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE.

Building trust with your parents is the

best way to make your life easier, have a
greater impact on your students, and
endear yourself to your school's
administration.
