1. Consider a Yagi-Uda antenna to operate at 500 MHz with a boom length of 72 cm using
elements with diameter of 3.6 mm. Using the attached table and graph, calculate the following:

1. the number of elements in this array. [2 Marks]

2. the lengths (in meters) of the reflector and all the directors. [4 Marks]
3. the distance (in meters) between the reflector and the driven element (SR ) and the distance
between directors (SD ). [4 Marks]

2. (a) Fill the blanks for the following:

1. The basic unit of a Yagi-Uda antenna consists of ............ elements.

2. When the transmit antenna is linearly polarized with tilt angle (τt ) of 450 , and the receive
antenna has a tilt angle (τr = 300 ), the polarization efficiency (ep ) is ............
3. According to the attached Yagi antenna design table, when the boom length is 0.8λ, the
number of elements is ...........

(b) For the communication arrangements shown in Figure (1), if all the antennas are lossless
half-wave dipoles with the directivity given by:

cos2 π2 cos θ

D(θ, ϕ) = 1.64
sin2 θ
Find the received power (in dBm) at the two antennas in the building if the transmitted power
from the tower is 100 W at 1 GHz. [7 Marks]
