Aligning your vision with your organizational structure

Having the right culture is one vital factor for a successful business, but having the right
structure is equally important.

Now that you have considered the alignment between your vision and culture, you are ready
to explore how the structure of your organization can be developed. This will ensure that you
have the right people in the most appropriate roles to drive business growth.

Organizational structure
It is very important that you actively consider and design your organizational structure for
growth. Many small business leaders find organizational charts a helpful tool in visualizing
this structural design.

Organizational charts help you to identify areas in your business where staff may be
overstretched, and others where they may be underproductive. They also make clear how
staff relate to one another in terms of function and line management.
Whilst it is useful to begin with your current structure and staff, you should not be
constrained by them. You should focus on the roles that your business requires, and not just
the people themselves.

When you map out the roles and structure you will need for the future, you may find that you
have:

 gaps in human resources

 existing roles which need to change
 roles which you will no longer require.
In this lesson, you will consider

 your current organizational structure and

 how this will need to develop in order to support growth.
 You will then map out the roles that your business requires and identify any gaps.
 Once you have done this, you will create an Organizational Development Plan,
o which forms a clear roadmap for organizational change in your business.

Documenting your Organizational Development Plan (Exercise

4)

You have defined your future organizational structure, and identified where you will need to
develop staff, to recruit and find outsourcing partners. All of these activities require time and
resources, and you are unlikely to be able to do all of them at the same time. In this exercise,
you will complete an Organizational Development Plan – a prioritization tool that will enable
you to determine which actions are most important.
