The causes and prevention of child abuse

Child Abuse has been a very common issue in society . child abuse can happen due to poverty,
family stress, abuse of substances (drugs, alcohol) and psychological struggle.

Poverty is the state of being extremely poor .Even though some people are in financial need
they often times do not maltreat their children, poverty can increase the likelihood of abuse,
particularly when poverty is combined with other risk factors, such as depression, substance
use, and social isolation there are higher risk of child abuse .The socioeconomic status of
families does affect levels of child maltreatment. Child abuse enclose a wide range of behavior
that harms children, including neglect, physical abuse, and other forms of abuse. Children with
working mothers and absent fathers are more likely to be subject to neglect and abuse.when
single mothers work, child maltreatment is considerably more likely to happen, perhaps because
single working mothers are more neglectful or abusive, or because their children are left in the
care of someone who is neglectful or abusive. Parents may be stressed by their jobs, have
difficulty making ends meet, and feel mentally drained and unavailable to care for children at the
end of the day .Some parents abuse their children thinking that it's the child’s fault as to why
they're going through poverty.

Family stress has a high rate of causing child abuse .The long-term effects of abuse or trauma
can include: Severe anxiety, stress, or fear.when parents are isolated socially or lack sufficient
emotional or financial support. Stress resulting from job changes, loss of income, health
problems, or other aspects of the family environment can increase the level of conflict in the
home and affect the ability of parents to cope or find support.Exposure to violence can harm a
child's emotional, psychological and even physical development. Children exposed to violence
are more likely to have difficulty in school, abuse drugs or alcohol, act aggressively, suffer from
depression or other mental health problems and engage in criminal behavior as adults. Parental
stress was found to play an important role in abusive families. Physically abusive families were
significantly more often low income, had younger mothers with less education, more frequently
reported a family history of child abuse, and were more likely to be abusing alcohol or drugs.
Abusive mothers are more stressed due to frequent life events, and have a more negative
perception of these events, mothers had higher rates of both depression and state anxiety.
Parent substance use and psychological struggles can have negative effects on children. When
parents ingest alcohol and drugs into their system it takes an effect on their brain ,which causes
them to behave a particular way. Therefore when people drink and do drugs they have a
tendency to get physical with their loved ones and project their anger and frustration onto their
kids by physically and verbally abusing them , which later on takes an effect on their mental
health . When situations like this happen to children it will affect their learning and will cause
failure in school . Children shouldn't have to be scared of their parents , their parents are
supposed to be their safe place , where they can talk about their emotions without being
devalued .

Why is prevention of child maltreatment important? ,because it can be avoided. abuse and
neglect can lead to negative consequences such as depression, developmental delays, and risk
of developing substance abuse during adulthood. Some preventions of child abuse are ;
educate people on the signs of child abuse , teach children their rights and values so that they
will report the abuse and Listen to the children so that they will feel valued and be willing to talk
if he/she is being abused.
