STEM Writing Contest Contest

FEB. 2, 2022 - MARCH 9, 2022

New York Times journalists in the Science, Health and


Technology sections explore scientific topics in a way that is
engaging and understandable to the general reader.

For this contest, The Learning Network invites you to bring


that same spirit of inquiry and discovery to finding a STEM-
related question, concept or issue you’re interested in, and, in
500 words or fewer, explaining it to a general audience in a
way that not only helps us understand, but also engages us
and makes us see why it’s important.

We're looking for...

An engaging hook that Research and/or quotes An explanation of


grabs readers' attention from experts to give why the topic matters
context and credibility

Contest Rules
The contest is open to students ages 11 to 19 in
middle and high school anywhere in the world.
Each submission must be 500 words or fewer.
Please include cited research, but be very careful to
put quotations around any direct quotes you use, and
to cite the source of anything you paraphrase.
Please submit only one entry per student.
