Ben Miller
“Diving equipment is more than the tools of a man’s
trade, it is his home under water, his environment
for hours at a time. It should be designed to get him
down and back safely so that all he has to worry
about is his job, not the equipment.”

BEN MILLER
Ben Miller, the man behind the designs of Miller Diving Equipment, a man dedicated to craftsmanship and
quality, principles too often lost in today’s world of mass production and imitation. Miller, a commercial diver
for over 11 years in the offshore oil fields of Louisiana, designed each piece of equipment with the concern
and expertise of a seasoned veteran. He personally tested each design in the field as he earned his living as a
deep-sea diver, a career he started in Louisiana in 1967.

THE LEGEND BEGINS

The 100 series bronze Miller Helmet was developed in 1969. In 1970 on a diving crew bus, returning from a
job in Grand Isle, Miller designed his weight belt buckle with stainless steel torsion spring. In 1971 he designed
the first heavy-duty diving harness, constructed with stainless steel rivets and washer plates and all stainless
hardware. Backpacks and various models followed in 1973 thus creating a state-of-the-art for the industry. In
the following 30 years he upgraded the designs of his helmets and gear, keeping the tradition of durability,
safety and easy maintenance.

LOOKING AHEAD
To continue to thrive as a business we must look ahead, understand the changing needs of our customers and
shape our business to prepare for what is to come..

NEW BEGINNINGS
Miller Diving is dedicated to continuing Ben Miller’s legacy of providing the diver with the highest quality, most
rugged and reliable commercial diving equipment that can be produced.

Miller Diving is now located in Santa Maria, California and is proud to manufacture and support the Miller Div-
ing line of products. Ben’s traditions of high quality craftsmanship and innovative designs to keep the Miller
Diver at the forefront of safety and technology will continue in his honor.

HONORING THE PAST

Miller Diving engineers are completing development of many of Ben’s original concepts and using new manu-
facturing processes and techniques to produce the highest quality products possible, “Honoring the past by
moving into the future.”

B WARNING
Do NOT dive in chemically, biologically, or radioactively contaminated water unless it
is firmly and clearly planned to dispose of or destroy the harness and extraction bridle
after use. This is due to the fact that webbing cannot be decontaminated or completely
sanitized after such exposure. Sanitizing agents can attack the strength and integrity
of the webbing, causing weakness and failure of the parts. This may lead to serious
injury or death. Do not dive in a contaminated environment unless you have been thor-
oughly trained and equipped for this type of diving.

Read this manual before using or maintaining the product, even if you have experience with other div-
ing products. If you have purchased the product new from a dealer, be sure to send in the
warranty registration card so we may keep you informed of any safety notices that affect
this product. If you resell or loan this product to another diver, be sure this manual accompanies the
product and that the person reads and understands the manual. In addition to the manual a log book
should be used to log all repairs, maintenance and use.

B CAUTION
Diving is a life threatening occupation. Even if you do everything right you can still be
killed or injured. None of the Miller Diving® products can prevent accidents, injuries or
death due to improper training, poor-health, improper supervision, improper job re-
quirements, improper maintenance or acts of God.

Important Safety Information: Miller Diving® products are intended for use by trained divers who
have successfully completed a recognized training course in surface supplied diving

of associated equipment. Many countries have specific laws and rules regarding commercial diving. It is
important for the user to understand the rules, regulations, and philosophy imposed by the governing,
regulating bodies whenever using commercial diving equipment.

Whenever Miller Diving® products are used in European Countries, which have adopted the C.E. cer-
tification programs, they must only be used with C.E. certified components. Diving operations should

 General Information

1.1 General Information

The Miller Diving® Easy Lift harness includes a rubber backpack to mount a bail-out cylinder, non-
removable shoulder straps, leg straps, chest strap, waist strap, seat support straps and stainless steel
D-rings for umbilical and tool attachment. Easy adjustments at the shoulders are made by simply pull-
ing down on the adjustment ends, or by creating slack on the load end of the webbing, therefore releas-
ing a stainless steel locking mechanism, then simply adjusting to the proper height. The blue webbing
for the vertical leg (height) adjustment is threaded through a stainless steel double back adjuster for
secure locking and trouble-free adjustments. All of the eight adjustable components of the harness have
neoprene adjustable sleeves to ensure secure and streamline adjustment ends.

The unique seat webbing increases safety when being used in combination with the Miller Extraction
Bridle. The design match of the two creates the ideal three point pick up of a conscious or unconscious
diver with unmatched comfort and security. Each harness has an identification plate attached to the
backpack with serial number, part number and manufacture date.

1.15 Pre-Donning Checks

Follow the Pre Dive Inspection Checklist (See
"1.20 Inspection Of The Miller Easy Lift Diving
Harness And Extraction Bridle" on page 20).

A Pre Donning Fitting should be performed the

first time the harness is used or if another user,
of a different size, is to use the harness. Correctly
adjust the height of the Leg Loops for the size of
user. The vertical position of the Leg Loop should
be mid way on the thigh. Once this adjustment
has been made, it does not have to be reset on
a daily basis, unless the size of the diver using
the harness changes. For correct orientation of
the harness and leg straps, make sure the round
head of the rivet is facing towards the diver.

1.20.2 Pre And Post-Dive Inspection

Procedure
Use the checklist provided on page 22 for in-
spection. At a MINIMUM, follow the steps be-
low.

1) Inspect the webbing and its stitching for abra-

sion, fraying, loose or broken threads, cuts, nicks,
severe wear. Check for signs of heat or chemical
attack (melt marks, discoloration or deformities).
Make sure all straps are present.

2) Inspect the stainless steel hardware such as

strap adjusters, V-rings and D-Rings. Check
for excessive corrosion, pitting, signs of crack-
ing, deep gouges and sharp edges. Make sure all
hardware is present, well secured (rivets and all
stitching in good condition) and in proper work-
ing order.

3) Inspect the rubber backpack for signs of heat

or chemical attack, cuts, nicks, or severe wear.

4) Confirm that the ID plates and care labels are

present.

1.20.3 Corrective Action

If upon inspection (or at any time) lack of main-
tenance or any damages are detected, or the in-
tegrity of the equipment has been compromised
in any way, remove the harness or bridle from
service immediately and mark “DO NOT USE”.
The equipment then must either be destroyed or
undergo repair and maintenance. Contact your
authorized Miller Diving dealer for evaluation
regarding whether or not the harness or bridle
is repairable. Or if questions, contact Miller Div-
