EXT.

BOMB DAMAGED STREET -

DAY

FADE IN CILLY walks through a railroad underpass onto a street badly damaged by bombs. Cilly is 24, quite pretty with a pleasant demeanor. There is something about her open and friendly manner that men find very attractive. Air raid sirens begin to howl. Cilly begins to run. We hear the noise of the approaching bombers. Cilly runs faster until she arrives at a badly bombed apartment building. We see that only the ground floor is still habitable. Just as she is about to enter the building Cilly sees a thin, coltish, seven year-old girl, FLITZI running awkwardly towards her, her long braids swishing behind her - she has a wooden leg. Cilly dashes to scoop up Flitzias we hear bomb explosions all around. Cilly runs into the apartment building holding Flitzi tightly. 2 INT. KITCHEN, CILLYS APARTMENT DAY 2

Cilly comes into her large cluttered kitchen and puts Flitzi on the floor. Cilly opens a cupboard door - inside is a five year-old boy ANTON who is holding his hands over his ears. Anton has a sweet but rather mischievous face with unruly hair going off every which way. ANTON Mama! With Flitzi clinging onto her, Cilly grabs Anton from the cupboard. CILLY Quick now. Into the cellar. Cilly opens a trapdoor in the floor. The three rush down into the opening. Cilly reaches up and slams the trapdoor after them. 3 INT. OFFICE DAY 3

HANS STEINBRUCK sits opposite an OLD BUREAUCRAT in a sparsely furnished office. The expression on the old bureaucrat's face is of infinite boredom. Steinbruck is a large, good-looking, muscular 21 year old. TITLE OVER: GERMANY 1942 BUREAUCRAT So you want to join the Gestapo? HANS Yes! I think I'd be great at that kind of work. Working in a factory is not for me. I love adventure. That's why I went to sea. The bureaucrat looks at Hans' file.

2. BUREAUCRAT You're not in the party? HANS No. Politics don't interest me. BUREAUCRAT Let's go through your papers one more time. Your name is Hans Steinbruck and you were born on April 12, 1922 in Goslar. HANS That's right. BUREAUCRAT At five years of age you were sent to a municipal orphanage because your parents had lost their lives in an accident? Hans nods yes. BUREAUCRAT (CONT'D) You did not complete grammar school. In 1935, you were able to find a position as a cabin boy in the merchant marine. While serving in the merchant marine, you became sick with malaria? HANS Yes. Caught it in Africa. BUREAUCRAT Then you were in the army for just four weeks when you came down with malaria and fell off a tank and fractured your skull. You were discharged from the army. Now you're working in a greasy-spoon cafe?! HANS You got it all right. The bureaucrat grabs a big stamp and stamps REJECTED on Han's application. BUREAUCRAT Next! 4 INT. HOTEL RECEPTION AREA NIGHT 4

With a GIRL on his arm, Hans enters the lobby of a dilapidated hotel that has clearly seen better, even elegant, days. Hans and the girl are quite drunk and in the best of moods. They go to the reception counter. HANS We want your very best room.

3. The WOMAN at the reception counter doesn't react at all. Hans thinks he knows why and reaches into his pockets for money but doesn't find any. His girlfriend takes a couple of bills out of her purse and puts them on the counter. RECEPTION WOMAN We're full. Hans turns to his companion and makes a gesture to signify: "I can take care of this." HANS Listen. Do you know who I am. No.?! I'm an officer in the Secret Police you know, what people call the Gestapo. And I demand a room right now. You understand?! The reception woman gets two towels and a key from the shelf behind her and gives them to Hans. RECEPTION WOMAN Second floor, room 22. Register here. Hans registers and makes an expression to his girlfriend to indicate she should have known from the start that Hans was he master of the situation. The two go upstairs. No sooner are the two are out of sight than the reception woman picks up the telephone. 5 INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT 5

The camera moves along a wall which has numerous cracks. A young woman cries out. We hear her but we don't see her. The young woman sighs, cries out, groans. A man groans. The young woman cries out again. TITLE OVER: THE EDELWEISS PIRATES A TRUE STORY The camera moves upward and we see a large, dilapidated hotel room. In the large bed, Hans and the young woman are making love. They are both obviously having a grand time. 6 INT. HOTEL CORRIDOR - NIGHT The receptionist walks along a hotel corridor followed by FOUR GESTAPO MEN. They arrive at room 22. Through the door one can hear the noises of Hans' and the young woman's love making. The Gestapo men take out their wood clubs. 7 INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT Hans and the the girl are making love. The door to the room crashes open and the four Gestapo men storm in. The girl screams. The Gestapo men immediately start beating Hans with their clubs. They don't stop until Hans is unconscious and covered with blood. Then they drag him out of the room. 7 6

4. 8 EXT. A BOMBED-OUT AREA COVERED WITH RUBBLE - DAWN TITLE OVER: COLOGNE 8

It is raining, as three prisoners stand at the edge of the crater - their heads are shaved and theyre wearing prison uniforms. One of the prisoners is Hans. The second prisoner is an EIGHTEEN YEAR-OLD. The third prisoner is a broadfaced Russian called VLADIMIR. A large dud bomb lies halfway down the side of a bomb crater. Hans takes a tool out of his kit. The young prisoner stares at the bomb. HANS We should be able to get at it from below. That would be okay, but... YOUNG PRISONER What? Hans goes to the other side of the crater opposite the bomb and carefully kicks a little bit of earth loose. This produces a little avalanche that slides down to the bottom of the crater. HANS You see that? If that had happened on the other side... YOUNG PRISONER So what do we do now? HANS What do you think? We disarm the son of a bitch! VLADIMIR Let Vladimir do. Is bad day for bombs. Too much rain. Hans climbs down the side of the crater. 9 INT. A MILITARY TRANSPORT TRUCK - DAWN The rain has grown heavier. TWO GUARDS sit in the front of a military transport truck. One of them is smoking. The other unwraps a sandwich. 10 EXT. A BOMBED-OUT AREA COVERED WITH RUBBLE - DAWN With great care Hans examines the underside of the bomb, unconsciously grunting to himself. Finally he locates the fuse. HANS Here's the fuse. You take over. I have to go take a piss. 10 9

5. Hans climbs out of the crater, goes across the rubble field, ducks behind a half-destroyed wall and unbuttons his trousers. VLADIMIR Need number 38 wrench. The young prisoner nods and begins to climb up the crater. Half way up, he stops. YOUNG PRISONER What's a number 38 wrench? Vladimir stares at the young prisoner for a moment. VLADIMIR I go self. Vladimir climbs out of the crater, goes to a tool kit and gets a wrench. VLADIMIR (CONT'D) I go piss also. You stay there! As Vladimir walks about ten yards away from the crater to urinate, the young prisoner stares at the bomb but keeps his distance. Suddenly, dislodged by the rain, some dirt begins to slide down onto the bomb. The bomb begins to move. The young prisoner tries to climb out of the crater but keeps slipping back. YOUNG PRISONER Hey! Vladimir! As Hans is buttoning up his trousers, there is a deafening explosion. He throws himself flat on the ground. Fragments of rubble fly by and a piece of the wall behind which he is lying collapses. Then silence. Hans slowly raises high enough to see over the wall. Vladimir is lying on the ground. Just as Hans is about to go to him, the guards come running. Hans ducks back down behind the wall. The guards walk around the crater which has grown much larger. Hans creeps away. GUARD You can forget about those guys. As they leave, one of the guards kicks Vladimir's body. GUARD (CONT'D) Lets go home. 11 EXT. CILLY'S BACK COURTYARD - DAY The rain has stopped. Hans climbs over a wall to a back courtyard. The windows to adjacent apartment building are open and Hans hears voices coming through the windows. 11

6. 12 INT. CILLY'S APARTMENT - DAY Cilly sits at a table in front of her sewing machine in her large, untidy apartment. Five teenage boys aged from 15 to 18 are around her, some sitting, others standing. One sixteen year old, KARL RIPKE, whose trousers Cilly is mending rocks nervously from one foot to the other, embarrassed to be wearing only his underwear. Karl is powerfully built. He has a birthmark on one cheek. Perhaps, his most notable feature are his large, beautiful hands. There is some adolescent uncertainty about him but his eyes contain a pleasantly mischievous sparkle. ADOLF SCHUTZ, age 17, a tall, thin youngster with a pimply face and ears that stand out from his head, stands behind Cilly and watches as she sews. BARTHEL SCHINK, age 15, a heavyset teenager with a round childish face, crouches next to Schutz. The very handsome GUNTHER SCHWARZ, also 15, sits on a sofa next to FRANZ RHEINBERGER whose upper lip sports adolescent fuzz destined to be a moustache someday. His hair is sllcked back. Behind the gang of teenagers Flitzi and Anton are playing. Anton is smearing ashes on Flitzi's face and upper body. Cilly finishes sewing Karl's trousers and gives them to him. CILLY That's the best I can do. Be more careful next time. Karl quickly puts on his trousers. Cilly looks at the clock. KARL Thanks, Cilly. I'll do my best. RHEINBERGER You gotta be smarter to keep ahead of the Hitler Youth. KARL Youre not so smart your toupee doesn't fall off. Rheinberger automatically feels the top of his head and everybody laughs. CILLY Karl, could you close the window? Karl closes the window and Cilly turns on the radio. BBC ANNOUNCER (V.O.) This is the BBC in London. Today, in the early morning hours the (MORE) 12

7. BBC ANNOUNCER (V.O.) (CONT'D) last German army troops left Sicily. The seventh U.S. army under General George Patton and the eighth British army under Montgomery... (static sounds) The broadcast is interrupted. SCHUTZ About time. GUNTHER How long you think it's going to take before they're here? RHEINBERGER (sings) I lost my heart to an Italian girl Has anyone seen my heart? I want it back, I want it back. Cilly turns the radio off since all that can be heard is static. CILLY Now...will you all get out of here. Ive work to do. The teenagers leave except for Karl who hesitates. He takes a bouquet of red and white geraniums out of his satchel. KARL The flowers are for you...I thought... CILLY Oh, thank you, Karl. The red ones are particularly beautiful. Karl blushes. He wants to say something more but Cilly has already turned her attention to her children. CILLY (CONT'D) You little pigs! What are you doing? Karl leaves. ANTON I'm making Flitzi black. 13 EXT. CILLY'S BACK COURTYARD - DAY CILLY (O.S.) Stop fooling around, Anton, and take the ashes out! Hans is looking around the courtyard. There is no way back because the courtyard wall is too high. Behind a little wall, he discovers two large trash bins. 13

8. He lifts the lid of one of the trash bins and clambers in. Anton comes into the courtyard, goes to the trash bin where Hans is hiding and dumps his bucket of ashes over Hans who takes the lid away from Anton and puts it back on top of the bin. Very thoughtfully, Anton crosses the courtyard and goes back inside. 14 INT. CILLY'S APARTMENT - DAY Anton come back into Cilly's apartment. CILLY Anton? What is it? ANTON There's a man in the trash bin. CILLY Nonsense. There's nobody...come on, I'll show you. 15 EXT. CILLY'S BACK COURTYARD - DAY Cilly takes Anton's hand and goes with him to the trash bins. Flitzi, whose face and upper body are now completely black follows them. CILLY Which one was it? Anton points to one of the trash bins. Cilly lifts the lid. CILLY (CONT'D) You see, there isn't anyone... She gives a little scream. HANS Psssst. Please, don't scream. Very embarrassed and smiling, Hans stands up. He is covered with ashes and dirt. 16 INT. CILLY'S APARTMENT - DAY Cilly comes out of the bedroom. She is carrying some men's clothing and a large sponge. Hans, naked above the waist, is standing at the kitchen sink and washing himself. He is very thin and his shoulders and back are covered with scars. A number is tattooed on his forearm. He is an attractive man but seems a little helpless. Both children are completely absorbed in watching Hans. Flitzi is a little suspicious but Anton is just fascinated. Cilly observes Hans with even more fascination than the 16 15 14

9. children. She gives the sponge to Flitzi and the clothing to Hans. CILLY Here... HANS Thanks... Cilly starts to wash Flitzi. Hans chooses a shirt and puts it on. HANS (CONT'D) Are these your husband's? CILLY No. They're Otto's. I was engaged to him. He was killed in Russia in '41. HANS And the kids? Cilly puts the sponge in the hot water and vigorously scrubs Flitzi's face. FLITZI Ow! CILLY They're Otto's, too. We were going to get married as soon as Otto's garage took off. At this moment there is a knock on the door. HANS (whispering) Who's that? CILLY No idea. Cilly pulls the rug back and opens a trapdoor that had been covered by the rug. CILLY (CONT'D) Go down there. There is another knock on the door. Hans disappears into the cellar. Cilly closes the trapdoor and covers it again with the rug. Cilly goes to the door and opens it. It is MARIA, age 40, Cilly's neighbor and close friend. Maria's figure is well rounded and her face shows her very warm heart. MARIA Hi, Cilly. Here's for the butter I borrowed. I got some from a comrade. It's first class.

10. CILLY Thanks, Maria. It could have waited until tomorrow. See you. Cilly closes the door in Maria's face. 17 EXT. IN FRONT OF CILLY'S APARTMENT BUILDING - DAY Maria's face shows her astonishment at Cilly's abrupt behavior. At this moment, the air raid sirens start to howl. Maria hammers on Cilly's door. Cilly opens the door. CILLY Come in. But don't you dare say anything. It's my business. 18 INT. CILLY'S CELLAR - NIGHT The air raid is at its height. There are deafening sirens, loud explosions and the whistle of shells. The cellar walls shake. Plaster dust descends from the ceiling. The overhead light flickers. Cilly, Maria, Flitzi and Anton are sitting on a cot. Hans sits on another cot. Maria looks at Hans. They are all frightened, but particularly Hans whose forehead is covered with sweat. He looks at the cellar door uneasily. There is another bomb explosion very close by. The overhead light bulb goes out. And then back on. Hans jumps up. He is ghostly white. HANS I can't stand any more of this! CILLY The worst is over. Hans runs to the shelter's safety door and pulls the bolts back. HANS I can't breathe! Cilly runs to Hans and tries to hold him back but he is much too strong for her. CILLY Leave the door alone! Maria tries to help Cilly but the two of them together are still not able to prevent Hans from opening the door. Just at this moment, the air raid stops. The sirens howl the all clear. Cilly sits next to Hans on the ground and begins crying from relief. Astonished, Hans stares at her for a moment. Then he kisses her. FADE TO: 18 17

11. 19 EXT. A STREETCAR STOP - DAWN 19

A company of Hitler Youth youngsters is marching by. They pass a small newsstand which is plastered from top to bottom with Nazi posters. The NEWSSTAND OWNER, a small man with a Hitler moustache, is unlocking the door to the stand. A dog runs down the sidewalk, stops at the newsstand, sniffs it and then raises his leg to urinate on wall of the stand. The newsstand owner kicks the dog away and rolls up the protective screen and puts out a display of the current issue of the SS newspaper, Der Strmer. A streetcar leaves revealing Karl, Schutz, Barthel, Gunther and Rheinberger. Karl is carrying a forty foot long rope over his shoulder. Barthel puts the rope behind the newsstand. Karl goes to the front of the newsstand and pretends to be interested in a newspaper. While he is doing this, he moves the end on the rope with his foot so that it goes around the stand. Gunther ties a knot in the rope once it is all the way around the stand. NEWSSTAND OWNER What are you doing? Piss off. A streetcar stops. We hear the following BBC newscast over the following scenes. (This broadcast was actually made.) BBC ANNOUNCER (V.O.) This is the BBC London. We have received numerous reports of teenage boys and girls rebelling against the Nazis. The number of these rebels who are to be found all over Germany is apparently large enough to give the Nazis some difficulty. Sometimes this youthful opposition can be recognized by a symbol. The most widely used symbol is the Edelweiss. For young Germans this flower which grows high in the Alps has become the symbol for a new flowering of freedom in their country... Rheinberger ties the other end of the rope to the back of a streetcar standing at the stop. The streetcar continues on its way dragging the newsstand with it. We hear cries for help and much yelling coming from the stand. The streetcar stops. The HJ youths come running. The newsstand owner struggles to his feet and points at Karl and his friends who are slowly leaving affecting nonchalance. The Hitler Youths start after them. The Edelweiss Pirates (Karl and his friends) run away. The air raid sirens sound. The Hitler Youths drop the chase. The Edelweiss Pirates stop running and continue on their way.

12. GUNTHER Shouldn't we go into the bomb shelter? KARL Are you crazy?! They'll be waiting for us there. The all clear sirens begin. KARL (CONT'D) Only a false alarm. 20 EXT. RAILROAD TRACKS - DAWN Karl and the others are crossing some railroad tracks. RHEINBERGER The other night I was at Jumpes Bar, just standing there chatting with Moll. And this girl comes in...she wasn't half bad, ass too big but O.K...but, get this...she had a sign hanging around her neck believe it or not - which said: "You can screw me for a hundred pounds of potatoes." BARTHEL No! Really! RHEINBERGER I wanted to do business with her. GUNTHER But you only had 50 pounds of spuds! RHEINBERGER Just then they called the Vice Squad. SCHUTZ I thought you were hot for Anneliese? KARL She won't put out for him. Rheinberger gives Gunther a hard shove so that he chokes. RHEINBERGER How about you, kid? You still a virgin? Gunther turns bright red and can't a word out. Karl, who is walking in front of the others, turns around, taking his hands out of his pockets. Unbeknownst to him a letter falls out of his pocket. As quick as lightning, Rheinberger picks up Karls dropped letter Karl. 20

13. KARL What business is it of yours? RHEINBERGER What's this? "Dear Cilly"!? It's a love letter to Cilly. "I won't... Karl blushes a deep red and tries to grab the letter away from Rheinberger, who holds it close to his chest to keep it away from Karl. RHEINBERGER (CONT'D) Cilly, my sweet,...I wanna screw you rigid!! Karl slugs Rheinberger in the face, and grabs the letter. RHEINBERGER (CONT'D) You asshole! (wiping bloodied nose) Don't you know that Cilly has got somebody else now? They screw all day! Rheinberger makes an obscene thrusting motion with his hips. 21 INT. CILLY'S BEDROOM - MORNING Cilly and Hans lie in bed. Cilly caresses Hans' back, his neck, an arm. 22 EXT. IN FRONT OF CILLY'S APARTMENT BUILDING - MORNING A group of children including Flitzi and Anton are standing in a circle and throwing a hand grenade back and forth. CHILDREN A bogeyman is running around our circle. Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum He shakes. He jiggles. He kicks up his legs. A bogeyman is running around our circle. If you turn around or laugh, You'll get a hump on your back. 23 INT. CILLY'S BEDROOM - MORNING Cilly's pulls Hans shirt off. Then she unbuttons his pants. Hans pulls Cilly to him and kisses her passionately. 24 EXT. IN FRONT OF CILLY'S APARTMENT BUILDING - MORNING 24 23 22 21

Karl steals a pot of red geraniums, runs through a railroad underpass, over a field strewn with rubble, past some bombed out buildings and huts and arrives at the spot where Anton, Flitzi and the other children are playing. Anton drops the hand grenade behind Flitzi and starts running around the circle.

14. KARL Is Cilly home? Flitzi throws the hand grenade at Karl. FLITZI Catch! Karl catches the hand grenade and throws it as far away as he can. Anton runs to Karl and jumps on him. ANTON Hi, Karl! KARL Hi there, Anton. 25 INT. CILLY'S BEDROOM - MORNING 25

Cilly and Karl are making love. Hans closes his eyes. Cilly hears a slight noise and turns her head and sees Karl coming into the bedroom with the pot of geraniums. Karl is horrified to see Cilly and Hans making love. Hans is at the point of orgasm and completely unaware that Karl has come into the bedroom. Cilly and Karl look at one another. Karl runs out of the apartment, banging the front door behind him. 26 EXT A BURNING BUILDING - NIGHT Air raid. The sirens are screaming. A building is hit by a bomb. Squads of bombers are flying over Cologne. There is heavy anti-aircraft firing. The bombers turn away. The sirens sound the all clear. 27 EXT. LARGE RUBBLE STREWN PLAZA - NIGHT Karl, his friends and a few other Edelweiss Pirates are sitting together in an open area in front of several bombed out buildings. They have built a small camp fire. They are all casually dressed and the boys all have long hair. Some are wearing Edelweiss pins. Gunther is strumming on his guitar. Karl is trying to open a can of beans without any luck. Then he loses his temper and bangs on the can of beans with a heavy piece of rubble. The can bursts and beans fly in all directions. Rheinberger gives Schutz a shove. RHEINBERGER What did I tell you? Cilly's got someone. SCHUTZ Sh-h-h-h! He'll murder you! 27 26

15. Rheinberger shrugs and turns to his girlfriend ANNELIESE, a pretty young girl with a broad face. Schutz shines his army flashlight on the front of a bombed out apartment building. The building has been sliced in half by a bomb in such a way that the outer wall has fallen away and the rooms are all exposed, their furniture still in place. It is as if the owners had just stepped away for a few minutes. Schutz sees a large sausage hanging in the kitchen of an apartment at the top of the building. SCHUTZ (CONT'D) A sausage. Up there. Schutz shines the beam from his flashlight on the sausage dangling above a kitchen table. GUNTHER I don't believe it. A sausage! Karl begins a daredevil climb up the ruin. Schutz follows him with the beam from his flashlight - like a spotlight following a circus performer. SCHUTZ Are you crazy? Come down! At one point, Karl slips but catches himself in the nick of time and finally arrives in the kitchen with the sausage. Karl holds the sausage up triumphantly and then takes a big bite out of it. The Edelweiss Pirates all applaud. Just then Karl sees three HITLER YOUTHS at the the plaza. they are headed toward the Pirates. to whistle the melody from a popular song. All begin to whistle the same melody and then they song: far side of Karl begins the Pirates break into

KARL AND THE OTHER PIRATES Who gives the Hitler Youth bloody noses? The Edelweiss Pirates, the Edelweiss Pirates Ta da. Ta dum. Ta da. Ta dum. Karl finds two large ladles and uses them as drumsticks to beat on a kitchen pot. The three Hitler Youths rush away. 28 INT. KARL AND PETER'S APARTMENT - EARLY MORNING Peter and Karl's apartment is a makeshift arrangement, the result of their having been bombed out more than once. The walls are bare. There are no curtains and the windows are covered by pieces of cardboard. Karl, in his pyjamas, goes from the bedroom to the kitchen. PETER, age 15, a youngster who often lives in his dream world, is only dressed in his underwear. As Karl comes into the kitchen, Peter leaves it and goes to the bedroom. A few moments later, Karl, upper torso now bare and with a towel around his neck, goes back to the bedroom from the 28

16. kitchen. At almost the same time Peter comes out of the bedroom. PETER Where's the brush? KARL How would I know? A postcard and a letter come through the mail slit in the front door. 29 INT. KITCHEN IN KARL AND PETER'S APARTMENT - EARLY MORNING Peter and Karl are sitting at the kitchen table. The radio is on: RADIO (V.O.) The southern front is expanding according to reports from the War Department on Sunday. The enemy has committed massive forces to securing a position in southern Italy. They are suffering huge losses. Even General Patton has expressed doubt about ... Karl turns the radio off. PETER Why did you turn it off? KARL Do you believe that crap? PETER Why not? The radio reporters must know! KARL You dumbbell! Karl gives Peter the postcard. KARL (CONT'D) For you. From Dad... Peter reads the postcard which we see blend over Peter's face. FATHER (V.O.) Dear Little One, Thanks for your long letter. Don't worry about me so much. Everything is fine with me. A big kiss! Love, Dad Peter makes a negative sound. 29

17. PETER Why do I always get a stupid postcard and you get a letter? Karl starts to read his letter. FATHER (V.O.) Dear Karl, It's raining, The soles of my shoes have rotted away. It would be great if I could get some new boots. I have the runs and the food is shitty, too... Peter has sat down on the sofa. PETER What does Dad say? KARL He needs boots. PETER Come on, let me see! Karl shakes his head no. Peter tries to grab the letter away from Karl. There is a minor skirmish which Karl wins. Peter puts on his Hitler Youth uniform shirt and goes to the front door. PETER (CONT'D) Mama wanted us to be in the Hitler Youth. KARL Mama is dead. Peter slams the apartment door as he leaves. Karl continues reading. FATHER (V.O.) ...I can't write everything. The war out here is a lot different than you think. So much of it seems pointless. Maybe we can talk about it when I have my next home leave. Just remember, don't pay any attention to what others say. The most important thing is to stay true to yourself. Something else. Take care of Peter. He's still wet behind the ears. If the bombs get to be too much, go to your uncle in Wolferrat. You'll be safer in the countryside. So, that's about it. Keep a stiff upper lip! And, when peace comes, we'll play football together. LOVE, YOUR FATHER

18. 30 EXT. A STREET - DAY A Hitler Youth military band marches over a large pile of rubble. The band passes by THREE WOUNDED VETERANS. One has a bandage over his eyes, another a bandage around his head and the third's lower jaw has been shot away. Peter is one of the members of the band. He plays the glockenspiel and from time to time he plays a harmonica which is held in front of his mouth by a wire device that circles his neck. Peter sees SEVERAL WOMEN digging a badly wounded YOUNG GIRL out of the rubble. A YOUNGSTER with a pimply, childish face is marching at Peter's side. 31 EXT. PARADE GROUND - DAY The marching band arrives at a parade ground. Three squads of older Hitler Youths are already there. The band marches the last meters in quick step. A heavy set 40 year old NAZI PARTY OFFICIAL with just one arm addresses the assembly. He has a bad cold. NAZI PARTY OFFICIAL Today is the day that, for the first time, you are given an opportunity to defend yourself against... (he sneezes) ASSEMBLY OF HITLER YOUTHS Gesundheit! NAZI PARTY OFFICIAL ...the enemy. The enemy is amongst us... Peter, who is standing the last row, is lost in his own world during all this. He watches a leaf as it blows over a wall. The camera follows the leaf. The pimply faced Hitler Youth whispers to Peter interrupting his reverie. PIMPLY HITLER YOUTH (whispering) This old goat spouts on and on. In Essen, they gave the Hitler Youth patrols thirty-eight caliber pistols. Real guns! So they can really get something done. NAZI PARTY OFFICIAL ...in every corner, in every building... (he sneezes again) ASSEMBLY OF HITLER YOUTHS Gesundheit! 31 30

19. 32 EXT. A LARGE RUBBLE FILLED AREA - DAY FIFTEEN EDELWEISS PIRATES have set up camp in a large open area strewn with rubble. Some of the Pirates including GUSTAV BERMEL are playing football. Gustav is very small for his sixteen years. Only rarely does he join the Edelweiss Pirates in their activities. Karl is standing behind a wall and writing on it in big white letters: EDELWEISS PIRATES!!!!!! Barthel appears, wearing a Hitler Youth uniform. Rheinberger lunges forward at him. RHEINBERGER Shit! I nearly slugged you! Why are you wearing those rags? BARTHEL I have to go the Hitler Youth in a while. Otherwise my gram won't give me nothing for my birthday, Gustav takes his leave. GUSTAV See you guys. Rheinberger kisses Anneliese good-bye. The three girls among the Pirates leave as well. Bermel and the girls clamber through a window on the ground floor of a ruined building and are gone. 33 EXT. SIDE STREET - DAY 33 32

The leaders of the four squads of Hitler Youths pass out clubs to the teenagers who are between 15 and 18 years old. The pimply faced Hitler Youth smacks his hand with his club to try it out. 34 EXT. A LARGE RUBBLE FILLED AREA - DAY 34

Twelve Hitler Youths appear on the side of the rubble filled area farthest from the Pirates. Peter is one of the Hitler Youths. Gunther is the first to see them. GUNTHER We've got visitors. Karl runs to join his comrades. Gunther turns around and sees that twelve more Hitler Youths are coming from behind the ruins. GUNTHER (CONT'D) Shit! The Edelweiss Pirates run to a big hole in the wall of a burned out factory.

20. 35 INT. BURNED OUT FACTORY - DAY The roof and ceilings of the factory have been heavily damaged by fire. But the walls of the various rooms are still standing creating a giant labyrinth. The Pirates run down a long narrow corridor. The Hitler Youths are not far behind. The corridor comes to a juncture with several branches. The Pirates split up going in different directions. Rheinberger, Schutz, Gunther, Barthel and Karl make up one group. KARL Come on...this way! The Hitler Youths also divide into groups so that they can chase all the Pirates. HITLER YOUTH LEADER You! Follow them! The rest. Follow me! Karl's group enters a huge room with two exits. They run to the exit on the far side of the room. But Hitler Youths appear at that exit. RHEINBERGER Go back! The five Pirates run back to door through which they had entered the room but now there are Hitler Youths there, too. Trapped, the Pirates prepare to fight, picking up pieces of rubble and boards. Screaming and yelling, the Hitler Youths run to brutally attack the Pirates who don't hesitate to join the melee with matching brutality. But the Hitler Youths are just too numerous and too big for the five Pirates. KARL Let's get the hell out of here! The five Pirates are able to escape through one of the exits and run down a small brick passageway. At the rear, Karl keeps looking over his shoulder and eventually falls behind the other four. KARL (CONT'D) Hey! Suddenly, some more Hitler Youths are coming from the other direction. Karl runs down another hallway, through a room, into another hallway and turns a corner into yet another hall. But this hall comes to a dead end after a few meters. Karl is trapped! 35

21. A Hitler Youth comes running into Karl's hall. Karl is about ready to fight this Youth but then he stops. It is his little brother Peter. The two stare at one another. Seven Hitler Youths appear at the entrance to the hall that is quite dark. Without taking his eyes away from his brother, Peter calls out: PETER No one here. The Hitler Youths run on. Peter and Karl continue to look at one another. PETER (CONT'D) Get going. Karl backs out of the hall and runs away. 36 EXT. FIELD STREWN WITH RUBBLE - NIGHT Karl limps across a rubble strewn field. He hears a shrill whistle. He sees Gunther standing on a pile of rubble and follows him into a bombed out building where Rheinberger, Schutz and Barthel squat. They are hurt and totally exhausted. RHEINBERGER There you are. BARTHEL Did you see me flatten that Hitler Youth guy? Left, right, left again just like a proSCHUTZ Shut up! You're only just out of Hitler Youth kindergarten yourself. Barthel turns to Schutz threateningly. BARTHEL Say that again! KARL Don't get all worked up. What's the point? So what do we do now? SCHUTZ Let's go to Klapper Alley. I know somebody there. Elsa. She's got booze and ham. RHEINBERGER Maybe she'll put out, too. SCHUTZ And Hitler will become an Edelweiss Pirate!! 36

22. 37 EXT. STREET CORNER - NIGHT Karl, Rheinberger, Schutz, Gunther and Barthel are standing on a street corner. SCHUTZ There's a shortcut this way. The Pirates cross an area of ruins and rubble. Suddenly they hear shrill screams. BARTHEL What's that? Schutz points to a wall. SCHUTZ That's the L.D. House. The headquarters. Gestapo 37

The youngsters fall silent. Again screams shatter the night air. Gunther climbs on top of a large mound of trash and looks over the wall. GUNTHER Hey, come here! The others climb up the mound. They can see the inner courtyard of the Gestapo building and the gallows from which FIVE MEN and ONE WOMAN are hanging. Three GESTAPO MEN begin to take the corpses down. To one side, watching the proceedings by himself, stands another GESTAPO MAN (KTTER) Gunther points at him. GUNTHER (CONT'D) That one with the cauliflower ear is called Thick Ear. He interrogated my uncle and he hasn't been able to walk ever since. Rheinberger is staring at the woman on the gallows who is about to be cut down. RHEINBERGER Look! The woman is still moving! BARTHEL I'm going to be sick to my stomach. The hanging woman does show signs of life. Thick Ear goes to the hanging woman and pulls on her dangling leg until her neck breaks. 38 INT. CILLY'S BEDROOM - MORNING Cilly and Hans are asleep in bed. Suddenly Hans sits up he has had a bad dream. Cilly wakes up and stretches unintentionally touching a long scar on Hans' chest. Hans flinches. 38

23. CILLY Did you get that in the camp? HANS No. It was the Gestapo... When they've got you down in in their prison cellar, you keep hearing the footsteps...and each step scares you because maybe it's them coming to get you again...and it'll start all over again...sometimes they came twice in one day...then maybe a couple of days would go by and nothing. But you're always scared shitless when you hear the footsteps. Hans gets up and goes to open the window. HANS (CONT'D) ...Every night I dream about those bastards. If only I could get my hands on a couple of them... Cilly watches him. HANS (CONT'D) ...Gestapo, SS, S.A., they're all the same. Hans leaves the bedroom. 39 EXT. CILLY'S REAR COURTYARD - MORNING Hans opens the door to the rear courtyard, goes to the water trough and washes his face and upper body. As he stands up, Hans notices Karl, Rheinberger, Gunther and Barthel sitting on the courtyard wall. All the youngsters look badly beaten up. There are scratches, cuts, black eyes and bloodied noses. Wary, Hans steps back and bumps into Cilly. CILLY (whispering) They're O.K. (normal voice) Hello, guys! Cilly points at Karl's eye. CILLY (CONT'D) Hitler Youth I suppose!? KARL They surrounded us. SCHUTZ Two to one. 39

24. Standing in the doorway, Flitzi and Anton peer at the scene with great curiosity. CILLY Flitzi, get the iodine. The Pirates jump down from the wall. CILLY (CONT'D) Oh. This is Hans...my cousin. He's staying here...for a while. The Pirates all grin wickedly, except Karl. 40 INT. CILLY'S KITCHEN AREA - MORNING Cilly's iodine and first aid materials are on the kitchen table and Cilly begins to treat and bandage the Pirates. CILLY That one there is Rheinberger. The one with a big scratch is Barthel. This is Gunther...and thats Schutz. And Blackeye is Karl. HANS Hi, guys. Hans climbs onto the kitchen table to start to repair the ceiling. KARL You a cousin on Cilly's mother's side or her father's? HANS (at the same time as Cilly) Mother's side... CILLY (at the same time as Hans) Father's side. Hans' mother was my father's cousin. KARL Why aren't you on the front? CILLY He fell off a tank and was sent home. Karl looks disbelieving. Cilly dabs some iodine on Karl's cheek. Karl flinches as it burns. Cilly sees that the iodine is all gone. CILLY (CONT'D) Anton, go to Maria's and borrow some iodine. 40

25. Anton leaves. HANS Why are you guys messing around with the Hitler Youth. The pirates look bemused. HANS (CONTD) (CONT'D) Its the Gestapo you should hit. RHEINBERGER You think I'm tired of living? GUNTHER You might as well hang yourself from the nearest tree. KARL How the hell are we supposed to go after the Gestapo? HANS First of all, you've got to believe that you can do something. Don't sit around with your fingers up your arses. KARL Terrific. You sound just like a Hitler Youth leader - always trying to get people to believe in things. And everything they say is nothing but hot air. Cilly glances at Hans for his reaction. But Hans is unperturbed. HANS Stand up, Blackeye. Hans takes Flitzi to one side and whispers something in her ear. Flitzi listens very carefully, nodding from time to time. KARL And now what? HANS Go! Flitzi runs at Karl, butting her head into his stomach. Flitzi kicks Karl in the shin with her wooden leg. Karl falls down and Flitzi pulls his hair and sits triumphantly on his chest. HANS (CONT'D) That's what you call a surprise attack.

26. 41 EXT. AN OPEN AREA STREWN WITH RUBBLE - DAY Anton is walking around an open area strewn with rubble, some in large piles. He spies a plush rocking horse at the bottom of a big pile of rubble. Anton tries to dislodge the rocking horse which is caught between a piece of rubble and a wooden board. He pulls on the long board. He doesn't realize that a two hundred pound bomb is resting on the other end of the board. The bomb begins to roll on the board, knocking Anton over and trapping one of his legs. ANTON Ow!! Mama!!! Maria looks out her window. MARIA What is it? ANTON Ow! I can't get my leg out. MARIA Just wait! Anton keeps trying to get his leg free. The bomb moves a little bit. 42 EXT. OPEN AREA STREWN WITH RUBBLE - DAY Maria, Hans, Cilly, Flitzi and the Pirates all come running on to the field where Anton is trapped. CILLY Anton! ANTON Mama! HANS Just keep as still as you can, Anton. The others keep a distance as Hans carefully crawls up the pile of rubble surrounding Anton. He feels around Anton's leg under the bomb to see if he can figure out how the leg is trapped. Out of the corner of his eye, Hans sees a terrified Cilly walking towards them. HANS (CONT'D) (shouting) Get back! Way back! Cilly hesitates, then she walks back and takes Flitzi's hand. They all retreat 30 metres. HANS (CONT'D) Does it hurt? 42 41

27. Anton nods yes. HANS (CONT'D) Okay, Anton, Ive done this hundreds of times before. So, just lie back and don't move. Anton lies back. Hans carefully examines the bomb's fuse which is directly above Anton's leg. Hans goes to work on the fuse. Sweat pours off his forehead. Finally Hans removes the fuse which he holds up high in triumph. Hans grabs the board over which Anton had stumbled and uses it to lever the bomb off Anton's leg. Hans gives Anton the fuse and then picks him up and carries him down the rubble pile towards the approaching crowd. Cilly takes Anton from Hans' arms and hugs him. ANTON Stinky bomb! I hate bombs! Everybody is applauding Hans. The Pirates all gather around Hans and take turns examining the fuse. SCHUTZ I studied mechanics in a machine shop. Could you teach me how to do that? Karl turns the fuse around in his hand. KARL That's really something! RHEINBERGER Not bad. But I knew somebody once who could do it with his teeth! BARTHEL Where did you learn how to do that? HANS I was a bomb disarmament specialist. BARTHEL Where? Hans thinks for a minute. HANS In Africa. KARL Bull-shit! Bomb disarmament specialist in Africa!?

28. CILLY (grinning) They called him Bomber Hans there. GUNTHER That's a good one. Bomber Hans! 43 INT. CILLY'S CELLAR - DAY Hans, Barthel and Rheinberger hang a large leather bag from the cellar ceiling. The Pirates form a line and, on Hans command, each one takes a turn running to the bag and punching it several times. Hans shows Karl the right way to use his left fist. Hans' attention wanders for a moment and Karl takes advantage of the opportunity to slug Hans in the chin. The Pirates are vastly amused by Karl's trick on Hans. They have tied an old sofa cushion between two pillars and use it to practice kneeing an opponent in the testicles. While facing Hans, Rheinberger gets a throat hold on him. With an adroit turn Hans frees himself. Then he shows the Pirates the trick in slow motion. They have constructed a target range in a long dead end passage that leads away from the main cellar room. The targets are tin cans. Using stones, Karl and Barthel are practicing throwing at the targets. Cilly takes a turn and knocks over five cans on her first throw. 44 EXT. IN FRONT OF CILLY'S APARTMENT BUILDING - DAY 44 43

Hans and the Pirates, some wearing boxing gloves, are posing for a photograph. Karl is in front of them with an old fashioned camera on a tripod. Hans goes to get Cilly and the children to include them in the picture. Karl looks through his camera. Everyone smiles for the photograph. Karl presses the shutter. Flash! Looking through his camera, Karl sees Cilly give Hans a tender smile and then take his hand and put it on her stomach Cilly is clearly pregnant. Karl drops the shutter and walks away. HANS What's he got against me? RHEINBERGER You really don't know? Rheinberger looks at Cilly meaningfully. Hans also looks at Cilly, who blushes; as Maria comes around a corner. MARIA The Yanks have landed in France! They all cheer. An inquisitive neighbor looks out at them through her apartment window. NEIGHBOR What's happening?

29. Cilly picks up a football and puts her arm around Flitzi. CILLY Flitzi just scored a goal. 45 INT. CILLY'S APARTMENT - DAY 45

Cilly and Hans are sitting at the kitchen table. They are doing piece work for a factory that produces clothing for the army. Cilly is cutting out pieces of cloth for soldiers' long underwear. Hans is at a sewing machine sewing the pieces together. The sewing machine needle breaks. HANS This is shitty work! Hans tries to repair the sewing machine but only manages to stick himself in the finger. HANS (CONT'D) What shitty work! Hans has a temper tantrum and throws everything on the floor. Cilly, who is now very large and in her late pregnancy, bends over with difficulty and picks up the things Hans has thrown on the floor. Schutz comes into the kitchen with giant backpack. HANS (CONT'D) What have you got there? Schutz nervously moves from one foot to the other. SCHUTZ They want to send me to the front. I'm supposed to report at the camp tonight. Hans looks at Cilly. HANS You know what, Schutz? Don't report. The war is going to be over soon. So, if you want, you can stay with us in the cellar until then. SCHUTZ You really mean it?! CILLY Sure, we do. Cilly ruffles Schutzs hair. 46 INT. CILLY'S CELLAR - DAY An air raid is underway. Cilly, Hans, Flitzi, Anton, Karl, Rheinberger, Barthel and Gunther are sitting on cots in Cilly's cellar. Suddenly there is hammering on the shelter door. 46

30. SCHUTZ (O.S.) It's me. Schutz. Let me in. Hans opens the door. Schutz and two other men are standing there: HUPPELER, a large, agile man in his early thirties, and MOLL, who is a somewhat older man, clumsy and none too bright. HANS Who are these guys? At this moment, the air raid becomes much more intense. Cilly shuts the shelter door. CILLY Get in here fast! It's O.K., Hans. It's Huppeler and Moll. SCHUTZ Moll has got to find a place to stay for a few nights. So I thought maybe... HANS So, why here? HUPPELER He just escaped from the concentration camp! Cilly turns to Moll. CILLY That's strange. Your wife told me the other day you were in jail. Moll blushes and gives Huppeler a shove. The sirens sound the all clear. Cilly grins. CILLY (CONT'D) I don't mind if you stay. Settle it with Hans. Cilly goes back upstairs with the children. MOLL I've got something for you. He takes a pistol out of his pocket. MOLL (CONT'D) It's an 08. Hans takes the pistol and looks it over very carefully. MOLL (CONTD) (CONT'D) And I can get you plenty of ammo. Decisively, Hans gets a blanket and tosses it to Moll.

31. HANS Here. Find a bed. HUPPELER I heard you're an explosives expert, Bomber Hans? HANS So? HUPPELER I'm planning something soon and I could use someone like you. You'd get a share, of course. Interested? Hans aims the pistol at the tin cans in the target range, and shoots one off. HANS Maybe. 47 INT. ENTRANCE TO PETER AND KARL'S APARTMENT - DAY 47

The doorbell rings. Peter opens the front door. GROUP LEADER SOENTGEN is standing there. He is a man of 47 who is clearly very aware of his own appearance. SOENTGEN Heil Hitler! PETER Heil Hitler! 48 INT. PETER AND KARL'S KITCHEN - DAY Karl sits in a tub of water in the kitchen washing his toes. KARL Who is it? 49 INT. ENTRANCE TO PETER AND KARL'S APARTMENT - DAY PETER Group Leader Soentgen. Soentgen gives Peter a brown envelope. 50 INT. PETER AND KARL'S KITCHEN - DAY Karl makes a gesture of annoyance and angrily throws the soap in the water. Peter comes into the kitchen holding the open letter. He is crying. Soentgen is behind him. PETER Its about...Papa. 50 49 48

32. The camera moves to Karl's face. Karl ducks under the water. FADE TO: Soentgen and Peter are sitting at the kitchen table. The envelope and letter lie on the table. Karl, who is now dressed, stands blankly at a window. SOENTGEN You know its not easy for me either...having to bring these messages. (a beat) You know, I really could do with a drink. PETER Oh...course. Peter gets up, goes to a cabinet and comes back with a half full bottle of schnapps. PETER (CONT'D) This was Dad's. Soentgen pours himself a shot and gulps it down. SOENTGEN Your father was a brave soldier. He gave his life for the fatherland and the Fuhrer. Peter nods. Karl says nothing, but looks fierce. Soentgen pours himself another drink. SOENTGEN (CONT'D) But the job has its bright side. When I bring the bad news to these young widows, well...they need lots of consoling. I happily sacrifice myself. Soentgen makes a thrusting motion with his hips and laughs uproariously. Karl storms towards the front door. KARL Heil fucking Hitler!! Karl opens the door and leaves, slamming the door after him. 51 EXT. A FIELD FILLED WITH RUBBLE - EVENING 51

Sitting on a wall is ROLAND LORENT, a young man of 23, whose facial features are quite soft in marked contrast to his sunken cheeks. He writes feverishly on a piece of paper while furtively drinking from a bottle of schnapps. An elderly COUPLE walks by. Lorent looks up nervously and sees Karl who is just then passing by.

33. LORENT Karl! Hey, Karl! Karl stops - it is obvious that he has been crying. KARL Hi. SILENCE for a moment. LORENT Ain't seen you for awhile. KARL That's right. LORENT So? Lorent takes a drink from his schnapps bottle. KARL So, what? LORENT What do I know? They ain't sent you to the front yet? KARL No. But I'm supposed to go dig trenches in the rear. LORENT I'm never going back? Those assholes are going to have to win their war without me. Karl sits next to Lorent on the wall. Again neither says anything. Suddenly Lorent jumps up and makes a couple of crazy, very aggressive fighting movements as if he were attacking an invisible enemy. Then he sits back down just as suddenly as he got up. LORENT (CONT'D) You want a drink? KARL What a shitty life! Karl takes a swallow from the bottle. Lorent draws a pistol and holds it to Karl's temple. KARL (CONT'D) Hey! What are you doing? LORENT You scared? Why? For your shitty life? (MORE)

34. LORENT (CONT'D) You got no idea what you're saying. It's the Nazis that are shitty. Shitty blowhards. Shitty boot wearing bastards. I'd like to kill every last one. They both take another drink from the bottle, and then see a cyclist coming from the other side of the field. As the cyclist gets closer they recognize him as Group Leader Soentgen. LORENT (CONT'D) Look! It's that son of a bitch Soentgen. KARL You ought to shoot that guy. He brings the news to soldiers' wives when their husbands get killed and then he gets the widows to fuck with him. Soentgen rides by the two, paying them no notice. Lorent grabs his pistol and runs unsteadily after Soentgen and shoots him in the back. Soentgen falls off his bicycle. For a moment, Lorent just stands there somewhat taken aback by what he has done but then when he sees Soentgen still showing signs of life he shoots him again. KARL (CONT'D) Are you crazy? You are crazy!! Karl looks around. LORENT But you said he ought to be killed. 52 INT. KUTTERS' BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING The phone rings. The 62 year-old KUTTER wakes in a panic, sweat standing out on his forehead. Kutter has the expression of a man accustomed to power His features are commanding except for his left cauliflower ear. It is only when he is asleep that his underlying anxiety can be glimpsed. He quickly comes to himself and takes a pillbox from the night table. The phone rings again. Concerned, Kutter glances at his WIFE who is still asleep, a sour expression on her face and curlers in her hair. Kutter lights a cigarette and then takes a pistol out from under his pillow and goes out of the bedroom into the living room. We only hear his whispering voice. KUTTER (O.S.) Ferdinand Kutter. Yes...yes... I'll need someone who knows his way around there... No, Hoegen... yes, I know. Just get him out. 52

35. 53 INT. HOEGEN'S PRISON CELL- DAY JOSEF HOEGEN, a small, stocky man of 44 is sitting in his prison cell. His face is full and flabby. He is wearing a prison uniform. A PRISON GUARD comes into Hoegen's cell. GUARD Hoegen, you're being released. 54 EXT. IN FRONT OF PRISON - DAY Hoegen comes out of the gloomy prison, now dressed in civilian clothes. 55 INT. GESTAPO HEADQUARTERS ENTRANCE - DAY Kutter and Hoegen are walking through the badly damaged entrance hall of the Gestapo headquarters building. The windows are all smashed and pieces of the ceiling dangle down. Nevertheless everything is clean and orderly. SECRETARIES and GESTAPO OFFICIALS carrying files go back and forth. TWO GESTAPO OFFICERS with FOUR PRISONERS come toward Hoegen and Kutter. KUTTER Hoffmann and Spiess, you two be in my office in five minutes! And bring Biehn with you! HOFFMANN Welcome back, Hoegen. HOEGEN Screw you, Hoffmann. 56 INT. KUTTER'S OFFICE - DAY Hoegen and Kutter enter Kutter's office. KUTTER Group Leader Soentgen has been murdered. Hoegen looks at Kutter expectantly. KUTTER (CONT'D) He was shot in the back on waste ground. It was a cold-blooded assassination. HOEGEN Some soldier probably came back from the front too soon. KUTTER It was an organized band of terrorists. You know exactly who is involved. Communists, Edelweiss (MORE) 56 55 54 53

36. KUTTER (CONT'D) Pirates, fugitive slave laborers, deserters. They all stick together. And this won't be the only murder, Hoegen. They're going to wage war against us. HOEGEN You got anything to eat? Kutter takes a sandwich out of his briefcase and gives it to Hoegen. KUTTER It's ham. Overjoyed and smacking his lips, Hoegen bites into the sandwich. Kutter watches him irritably for a minute. The Gestapo officials, Hoffmann, Spiess and BIEHN, enter. Kutter uses a crayon to make a point on a map of Cologne. KUTTER (CONT'D) Here's where Soentgen was assassinated. He draws a circle around the point. KUTTER (CONT'D) The terrorists are active in this area...which means we must strengthen the army patrols, monitor all bars, search all slave labor camps with workers from the East, check civilians' papers...I'll get these terrorists if it's the last thing I ever do. HOEGEN Listen. I ain't got no stomach to mess around with them fucking lowlifes no more. I'd rather go back to jail and finish my sentence. And, after the war, I'm going to start a new career. I have... ambitions, yknow. KUTTER There's not going to be any "after the war". What's supposed to happen "after the war"? Hoegen looks at him without any expression. KUTTER (CONT'D) Why is it that you're in jail, Hoegen? Hoegen looks at the other Gestapo men who are grinning maliciously.

37. HOEGEN Black marketing. KUTTER How long was your sentence, Hoegen? HOEGEN Two years. KUTTER According to paragraph one of the law on offenses against the public welfare, you can get the death penalty for that. This can also be given retroactively... HOEGEN I get the message. 57 EXT. VEGETABLE GARDEN PLOT - EVENING At one end of a large area of ruins are a group of small allotments devoted to vegetable gardens. The gardens are surrounded by high board fences topped with barbed wire. With considerable difficulty, Hans climbs over one of the fences. While he is doing this, Cilly, who is very late in her pregnancy, slips through a little door in the fence which is so overgrown with vegetation that it is nearly invisible. Grinning, she greets Hans as he completes his climb over the fence. HANS If you didn't have such a big belly... Cilly puts her arm around Hans. CILLY This vegetable garden belongs to old man Pief. When I was a kid he caught me once when I was trying to steal some of his cherries and gave me a spanking... It would be great for us to have a vegetable garden like this. Maybe after the war...or maybe even a little cottage with a garden. HANS I don't think that far ahead. There's no point. They go past a number of garden plots to a wooden shack. Hans breaks a window. 58 INT. WOODEN SHACK IN VEGETABLE GARDEN - EVENING Cilly searches through a drawer. Hans brings in three withered radishes, 58 57

38. HANS Hey, look! Radishes! CILLY We need to find some substantial food - for the children. Cilly sits down. HANS I will take care of you, Cilly. Hans tries to stick a radish in Cilly's mouth but she shakes her head no. CILLY Ohh! I...dont feel good. Air raid sirens began to scream. Cilly stands up; she looks down...at a big puddle of reddish water on the ground between her feet. Hans looks at her, his eyes filled with panic. HANS What's going on? CILLY The baby's coming. 59 EXT. STREET IN FRONT OF AN BOMB SHELTER - NIGHT Air raid. A WOMAN with a SMALL CHILD holding her hand runs across the street to the bomb shelter and bangs on the door but it remains shut tight. The woman takes the child in her arms and runs in the opposite direction. An incendiary bomb explodes just behind her. The woman and child are engulfed in a fire storm. Bombs are falling everywhere. Buildings catch on fire and the fires spread to other buildings. Walls collapse. Shells explode. 60 INT. WOODEN SHACK IN VEGETABLE GARDEN - NIGHT The whole shack shakes from the air attack. Even in this isolated place, the bombs can be heard and the fires seen. Hans is sitting on the floor of the shack biting his fingernails. Cilly, who is completely exhausted, lies on a cot. CILLY Hans? Hans slides over to Cilly and takes her hand. CILLY (CONT'D) I'll be O.K... HANS But what if something goes wrong? 60 59

39. CILLY Stay with us... Cilly has another labor pain. She doubles over, moans and screams. Her cries are drowned out by the noises of the air raid. Hans is totally confused and has no idea what to do. 61 EXT. STREET IN FRONT OF BOMB SHELTER - NIGHT 61

The sirens are sounding the all clear. The burning buildings illuminate the street. The charred bodies of the woman and her child lie on the pavement. 62 INT. WOODEN SHACK IN VEGETABLE GARDEN - NIGHT 62

The all clear is sounding. We see Cilly's badly strained, screaming face. Now we see the BABY'S head as it emerges from Cilly. Now there is total quiet. The baby's body slides out. We see hands grasping the baby. Hans lifts the baby up and puts it in Cilly's arms. FADE TO: Cilly is asleep. Hans touches the baby hands. The baby grasps Hans' thumb. Hans is fascinated and ecstatic. HANS Hello, little Hans! 63 EXT. IN FRONT OF CILLY'S APARTMENT BUILDING - NIGHT Karl and Gunther are sitting on the doorstep of Cilly's apartment building. Karl's hand rests on the ground with his fingers spread wide. He holds a knife in his other hand and stabs the spaces between his fingers as fast as he can. GUNTHER My father was in Amsterdam. They say he fell off a roof. Karl gives a side glance at Gunther. GUNTHER (CONT'D) He was a socialist and a Jew. You don't just fall off a roof. Gunther gets up and leaves. Peter comes walking down the street and stops in front of Karl. PETER I was looking for you. Karl doesn't say anything and just continues his dangerous game. PETER (CONT'D) You're going to lose a finger pretty soon. 63

40. KARL What do you know? PETER I read Dad's letters. Hans comes out of the building with the baby in his arms. Huppeler, Moll, Schutz and Rheinberger come out right after him. Then Flitzi comes running after them. HANS (to Karl) We're going to find some food for Cilly... Then Hans notices Peter. HANS (CONT'D) (to Karl) Who's that? KARL Peter. My brother. HANS Okay. Look, we need someone for a lookout. Karl doesn't say anything, so Hans turns to Peter. HANS (CONT'D) What about you, Karls brother? Would you like to see how to pull off a big deal? KARL No! Hans gives the baby to Karl to hold. HANS Take care of the baby until I get back. Hans leaves. Peter looks at Karl for a moment and then makes his decision. PETER Hey...wait a second. But Hans doesn't hear him. Peter runs after Hans and the others. The baby starts to cry. KARL Oh-h-h. The baby cries louder and louder. KARL (CONT'D) What do I do now?

41. FLITZI Rock it? Very timidly, Karl begins to rock the baby. FLITZI (CONT'D) You got to rock it harder. 64 EXT. A STREET - NIGHT Peter bangs on the window of a small truck. A MAN clambers out from a cellar entrance and disappears in the darkness. There is a soft sound of an explosion and the warehouse door is open. 68 INT. BUTTER WAREHOUSE - NIGHT Huppeler, Moll, Hans, Rheinberger and Schutz carrying flashlights enter a large room inside the warehouse. They see 23 large containers of butter in the center of the room. Hans whistles softly between his teeth. HUPPELER (softly) Holy shit! There must be more than 2000 pounds. 69 EXT. STREET IN FRONT OF WAREHOUSE - NIGHT Two Gestapo sedans and a troop transport truck come racing up the street and stop on the street in front of the warehouse. Peter runs away from his post. 69 68 67 66 65 64

42. 70 EXT. WAREHOUSE LOADING DOCK - NIGHT Peter comes running to the warehouse loading dock where Hans, Huppeler, Moll, Schutz and Rheinberger are putting the containers of butter in their truck. BUTTER WAREHOUSE - NIGHT Hans and the others gather at a window that looks out on the street. They see police jumping out of the troop transport truck and Gestapo officers getting out of the sedans. The Gestapo and police all take positions and start shooting. But to their great surprise, the shots are aimed at the building on the other side of the street and not at them. The Gestapo and police storm the building. There is return fire from the building. The Gestapo men throw hand grenades through the entrance to the cellar. A few moments later ten emaciated MEN and WOMEN come creeping out of the cellar. The Gestapo men beat their prisoners with iron bars as they emerge. HUPPELER Slave workers. One of the men tries to run away and Hoegen shoots him in the back. Another starts screaming and screaming. It is Vladimar, Hans former comrade in the bomb demobilization squad. HANS Vladimir! That's Vladimir! HOEGEN (O.S.) What are you screaming about? Hoegen shoots him in the head. Hans takes the safety off his pistol and runs toward the door. Huppeler jumps on Hans and tries to disarm him. Moll comes to help him. Huppeler knocks the pistol out of Hans' hand. Moll holds Hans down. HANS You yellow-livered bastards! Huppeler claps his hand over Hans' mouth. They drag Hans to the rear of the warehouse. 71 70

43. 72 EXT. STREET IN FRONT OF BUTTER WAREHOUSE - NIGHT HOEGEN On your knees! I said, on your knees! The men and women plead for mercy but the Gestapo men just shove them to the ground Hoegen goes to each prisoner, shootimg both men and women. 73 INT. ANOTHER WAREHOUSE - NIGHT We have a bird's eye view of this scene. There is a table under a naked light bulb hanging from the ceiling at the far end of a large warehouse room. Three black marketers sit at the table and play cards. One of the black marketers gets up and goes to open the door. Moll, Hans, Huppeler, Schutz, Rheinberger and Peter drive their truck into the warehouse and quickly unload the containers of butter. One of the black marketers fills a large cloth bag with money and gives it to Huppeler. 74 EXT. IN FRONT OF THE WAREHOUSE - NIGHT Huppeler gives Hans his share of the money. FRAU KRAMER Could I please speak with Mr. Willy Schmitz? HANS Sorry, he's not at home. FRAU KRAMER It's very important. When will he be back? Hans shrugs. He is about to shut the door in their faces when Ruth starts to cry. RUTH I can't take anymore. Frau Kramer tries to pull her daughter away. Ruth shakes her off; but Ruths headscarf falls off revealing her shaved head. Bald head or not, she remains a very pretty girl. RUTH (CONT'D) No, Mama, it doesn't matter. They all stop shooting. Hans takes something wrapped in paper out of his pocket and gives it to Peter. HANS Here. For your birthday. Peter unwraps his gift and we see that it is a harmonica. They make comic movements; sometimes they dance close and sometimes far apart. Cilly whispers something into Karl's ear and they both laugh. Hans is watching this performance with mounting anger. Ruth who is sitting nearby looks at Hans enraptured. Hans takes Ruth's hand and takes her to the area where the others are dancing. They dance very close to one another. Cilly begins to dance with Karl even more wildly than before. This results in their bumping into Hans and Ruth accidentally on purpose several times. HANS Let's go. No room here. Hans and Ruth leave. 98 INT. CILLY'S KITCHEN - NIGHT Hans goes to a window and lights a cigarette. RUTH Don't you want to dance? Hans turns around and takes Ruth in his arms. They start to dance. Ruth snuggles even closer to Hans. But Hans tenderly pushes her away. RUTH (CONT'D) Because of Cilly? Hans nods yes. 99 INT. CILLY'S CELLAR - NIGHT 99 98

Cilly is back dancing with Karl. She presses very close to him. Gunther, who is now dancing with Schutz, gives Karl a little poke and whistles softly between his teeth. Karl smiles from ear to ear. Hans and Ruth appear in the doorway. Cilly starts to tongue-kiss with Karl. Hans goes quickly to Karl and Cilly, grabs Karl by the collar and smacks him in the face. Before Karl can respond, Hans shoves him to the floor and begins to hit him like a madman. Cilly tries to pull Hans off Karl but Hans just shakes her away. The other Pirates try to help Karl.

60. PETER Stop it, Hans! RHEINBERGER That's enough! GUNTHER It's not Karl's fault. SCHUTZ Cut it out! You want to kill him?! Finally they are able to pull Hans away from Karl. The keep a tight hold on Hans so that Karl can get up. HANS Get lost, all of you! The youngsters just stand still. HANS (CONT'D) Out! Get out! The party's over. KARL Let's take off. (to Cilly) Are you coming with us? Hans wants to go after Karl again but Cilly steps between them. CILLY No. You better go on. I've got to straighten things out here. Then, unseen by Hans, Cilly takes the pistol Maria gave her out of her bag and hides it behind a loose brick. Hans puts the baby down and comes up behind Cilly and tenderly caresses her neck. But she draws away. HANS Come on, Cilly, let's make up. Cilly ignores him and starts to wash the dishes again. Hans puts on his jacket and leaves the apartment. Cilly smashes a dish on the floor. Then she sits down on a chair and begins to cry.

A light goes on in a window of a neighboring apartment building. The nosy woman neighbor looks out. 102 INT. MAIN ROOM OF A WAREHOUSE - NIGHT Hans opens the large iron door to a warehouse. HANS Krausen? There is no response. Hans goes into the dark room. Suddenly a pistol is put to Hans' temple. A match is struck to reveal...Lorent. LORENT What do you want here? HANS Booze! Lorent lights a candle that sits on a table next to a bottle of schnapps. Then sits down on a chair next to the table. He motions with the pistol for Hans to sit down at a second chair next to the table. LORENT Same as me. Sit down. Lorent pours a drink for Hans. 103 INT. CILLY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT 103 102

Cilly is doing the dishes. She thinks she hears something and stops to listen. The front door is bashed in. Four Gestapo men storm into the room. Cilly drops a dish and raises her arms. The baby starts to scream. Cilly wants to go to him but one of the Gestapo men points his pistol at her stomach. Two other Gestapo men pull the children out of their beds and drag them into the kitchen. Two additional Gestapo men run into the back courtyard. One of the Gestapo men puts the crying baby in Cilly's arms. Hoegen and Kutter come into the kitchen followed by the two policemen bringing Huppeler. Kutter looks at Cilly and the children and turns to Hoegen. KUTTER This...is your terrorist band!? Hoegen goes to Huppeler. HUPPELER In the cellar...under that rug there.

62. Hoegen pulls back the rug revealing the trapdoor to the cellar. Hoegen and seven Gestapo men with drawn pistols rush down the steps to the cellar. We hear a loud racket and the barking of a dog coming from the cellar. Cilly looks at Huppeler who can't meet her gaze and turns away. Hoegen brings Frau Kramer and Ruth up from the cellar. The Gestapo men follow bringing, with considerable difficulty, the snarling, unmanageable poodle. HOEGEN They've stockpiled a whole lot of weapons down there. And these two pieces of shit are Jews. Hoegen shows Kutter the tattooed numbers on the underside of Ruth's and Frau Kramer's arms. Kutter turns to Cilly. KUTTER Where's Steinbruck? CILLY Don't know. Kutter slaps Cilly's face hard. Flitzi screams. CILLY (CONT'D) We had a fight and he took off. Trying to avoid Cillys gaze, Huppeler mumbles. HUPPELER He'll come back. KUTTER What did you say? HOEGEN He said Steinbruck will come back. KUTTER What do you mean by that? HUPPELER Because of Cilly. The poodle licks Kutter's hand and Kutter starts to pet the dog. HOEGEN What if it looked like we'd left? And he heard we'd come and gone. See what I mean. But actually we'd be waiting. KUTTER Hoffmann, you take off with your men and take all the cars. Hoegen (MORE)

He watches as Cilly pulls down a blackout shade at a window of her apartment. 105 INT. WAREHOUSE MAIN ROOM - NIGHT The candle on the table has burnt down by a third. The candle is half burnt and the bottle almost empty. LORENT The third time I had home leave back from the front...back to my Liese and my little Anna...that's when we had that really big air raid...you know, beginning of March. I was in this bar and...when I got home after the raid there weren't nothing there but a smoking ruin...I dug like crazy, andthere was Anna's shoe - a tiny red patent leather shoe...and her little leg was still in the shoe...that's all I ever found of them, just that leg and shoe. Lorent falls silent, staring in front of himself. Hans offers him a cigarette. 106 INT. CILLY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT 106 105 104

Cilly, Flitzi and Anton are sitting huddled closely together on a sofa. Cilly cradles the baby in her arms. Kutter nervously paces back and forth with the poodle following him. He throws his cigarette on the floor and stamps it out. He goes to his overcoat and gets a pack of cigarettes from the pocket. Hoegen takes a sandwich out of his briefcase and begins to eat.

64. KUTTER Hoegen, you eat like a pig! Totally surprised, Hoegen looks at Kutter and stuffs rest of the sandwich into his mouth, and crosses his He admires his own reflection in his highly polished leather shoes, but then spots a piece of dirt on one his shoes. the legs. patent of

There is knock at the front door. KUTTER (CONT'D) Who's that? Cilly shrugs her shoulder. Kutter signals his men to station themselves either side of the door. KUTTER (CONT'D) Answer the door. Cilly goes to the front door and opens it. Maria is standing there. CILLY Hi, Maria. MARIA I know it's late but I just finished doing some baking and suddenly I remembered...didn't I borrow some flour from you? Maria gives Cilly a large flat dish covered with flour. A large swastika and question have been drawn in the flour. CILLY Ohh yes...you're right. MARIA And didn't I borrow some eggs, too? How many was it? CILLY Six. But wait until tomorrow to bring them. MARIA O.K. Sleep well. See you tomorrow. Cilly closes the front door and goes back into the kitchen carrying the dish. The two Gestapo MEN who had been positioned at the front door follow her. Cilly slams the dish of flour down so hard on the kitchen counter that the flour bounces obliterating what was written on it.

65. KUTTER Who was that? CILLY A neighbor. Suspicious, Kutter runs his hand through the flour but finds nothing. 107 INT. WAREHOUSE MAIN ROOM - NIGHT The candle has almost burned out. HANS Normally, you'd say you can't remember nothing before you're six or seven. But I can remember when I was just four and I was with my dad at a fair and he put me on a wooden horse and held me tight. Then the merry go road started up and it went real fast and I weren't scared at all...that's what I want to do with my kid someday. The iron warehouse door is shoved open. Hans and Lorent jump up. Kutter goes to his desk and holds a piece of paper up high. KUTTER (CONT'D) What about this? This communist flyer we found in Maria Dylewska's apartment? Was it just a coincidence that a woman who exactly matched a description of your fiance tried to buy a large quantity of exactly this kind of paper? HANS I don't know nothing about no flyers. I was never political. And Cilly's way too dumb for politics. Kutter goes very close to Hans and bends over him. KUTTER Why are you protecting Cilly? Hans just stares into the distance. Kutter picks up the phone: KUTTER (CONT'D) Bring her in. (to Hans) Don't you realize she gave you up some time ago?

87. A few moments later, Hoegen comes in with Cilly. Cilly, the left side of her face bruised and swollen,.has trouble standing. Cilly and Hans don't look at one another. Hoegen has a notebook which he thumbs through and then begins to read, at first just murmuring. But then his voice grows stronger and clearer. HOEGEN Just a minute... here we go. "I admit that Steinbruck is the father of my illegitimate child... Cilly and Hans look at one another. HOEGEN (CONT'D) I admit that I assumed that Hans Steinbruck was an escapee from the Cologne-Deutz Concentration Camp. What he told me though was that he was a fireman. I did not know that he planned to murder Party members and officials of the Gestapo and that he planned to blow up Gestapo Headquarters in Cologne. I further assert that I knew nothing of a plan to print Communist flyers. I was also unaware that the people staying with us in my apartment were Jews. I did know that he had purchased or stolen weapons and was storing them in the cellar. He told me he needed these weapons for self defense and he threatened many times to shoot me if I ever betrayed him". Kutter turns to Hans. KUTTER Enough! So, is this all true? Cilly looks at Hans. Hans looks at Cilly. KUTTER (CONT'D) I said, is that the truth? Hans looks at Cilly and nods imperceptibly. Then she, too, gives a barely noticeable nod. KUTTER (CONT'D) So...what do you say? CILLY Yes. Hoegen takes Cilly out of Kutter's office.

88. KUTTER And youre sticking with your story? Hans nods yes. Kutter makes a signal to his secretary who picks up her cigarettes and purse and leaves the room. The two Gestapo men advance on Hans. One of them is holding the leg of a chair and the other has a rubber hose filled with lead. They begin to give Hans a beating. KUTTER (CONT'D) I'll ask you once again. Was your fiance in your resistance group? HANS She didn't have a clue. The Gestapo men continue to beat Hans until he falls off his chair. 180 INT. WHITE-TILED PRISON INTERROGATION ROOM - NIGHT A prison guard brings Peter into the room where Hoegen is seated at a table. Hoegen pushes a chair toward Peter. HOEGEN Sit down, kid. Take the handcuffs off. The guard removes Peters handcuffs as Hoegen looks through some papers on his desk. HOEGEN (CONT'D) This report looks really bad for you. But I took the time to examine your Hitler Youth records. Outstanding! If I put in a good word for you... PETER I really don't know where Karl is. HOEGEN Don't give me that bullshit! Hoegen takes a bottle of ink from the table and bashes Peter's head with it. Peter screams. Then Hoegen grabs Peter, pulls him off his chair and bangs his head against a wall. HOEGEN (CONT'D) Where's your brother?! PETER Don't know. FADE TO: The prison guard comes back into the room. Hoegen makes an "X" beside Peter's name on the list. 180

An old MAN is riding his bicycle along a country road. Karl is standing away down the road in front of the small farm house. As the cyclist is about to pass him, Karl asks for a light. All the prisoners are handcuffed. Kutter, Hoegen, Gestapo men and police are waiting in the room. In the middle of the room is a large, long wooden table. A DOCTOR and TWO NURSES are standing next to the table. One of the nurses holds a syringe with a very long needle in a flat glass container of mercury solution. She is drawing the solution into the syringe. HOEGEN What's she got? KUTTER Mercury. A shot of that and there will be peace in the land. Even Hoegen is taken aback as Kutter signals to start with Lorent. KUTTER (CONT'D) Start with him. Five Gestapo men grab Lorent and drag him to the table in the middle of the room. LORENT Let me alone! You bastards! You fuckers! The Gestapo men force Lorent onto the table. Then four of them hold him down while the fifth holds his mouth open. The doctor injects the mercury into Lorent's vocal cords.

183

90. Horrified, the others must watch and see the fate that awaits them. Lorent is forcefully pulled up, taken to the opposite wall from the others and placed there with his face to the wall. Lorent retches and chokes. Then he makes a few sounds before his vocal cords fail him completely. Next they put Hans on the table. He offers no resistance. The doctor injects Hans. While they lead the choking Hans to the wall next to Lorent, other Gestapo men bring the terrified Peter to the table. Peter closes his eyes as the doctor starts to inject him. When the doctor finishes with Peter, they bring him to the wall to stand beside Hans. Then little Gustav is dragged to the table. GUSTAV (screaming) I only wanted to go to the movies! He, too, receives an injection. Hans tries to get Peter's attention but he can't because his vocal cords are paralyzed. Finally he bends over to Peter and kisses him. Cilly stands up and goes to loose brick in the wall - there is the pistol she hid. 196 INT. ORPHANAGE DINING HALL - DAY Cilly opens the double doors to a very large dining hall. On the walls of the dining hall where once there were flags with swastikas and pictures of Hitler, there are only bare spots. There are a HUNDRED CHILDREN sitting at a very long table. They are all dressed the same way - not a uniform, but close - and they all have the same joyless, unchildlike expressions on their faces. WOMEN SUPERVISORS watch the children as they eat. The only noise one hears is the clattering sound of the dishes. Cilly remains standing in the doorway looking around the room, searching. Many of the children turn and look at Cilly. Cill scours the room for Flitzi or Anton amongst the sea of children all dressed alike. Flitzi, however, is concentrating on trying to get the baby Hans to eat a spoonful of soup. ANTON Mama! Flitzi hears Anton and turns to see him jump up and run to the doorway where Cilly is standing. 196 195 194

94. Picking up the baby, Flitzi tries to snake her way toward Cilly through the sea of children. CILLY Anton! Cilly takes Anton in her arms. As Flitzi gets close to Cilly she hesitates for a moment. Her mother looks so different. CILLY (CONT'D) Flitzi?! Flitzi runs to Cilly, gives her the baby and then hugs her. FLITZI Mama! Cilly hugs the children to her. They hear the distinct sound of someone clearing their throat behind them. One of the women supervisors is standing there. CILLY My children...Im taking them... SUPERVISOR It's not that simple. You need a form from the Municipal Juvenile Authority which authorizes you to resume custody of the children. (looking the dirty, disheveled Cilly up and down) In your case...that will take some time. She signals to two other supervisors. They start over to assist their colleague. SUPERVISOR (CONT'D) Until then the children must remain here. Cilly takes her pistol out of her purse and points it at the supervisors. CILLY I don't think so.
