Third Quarter

Note:
● Use arrows to represent the light rays.
● Start drawing each light ray from the tip of the object.
● The image formed must be drawn vertically from the principal axis going to the point of
intersection.

Rules for drawing ray diagrams in mirrors:

For Concave Mirrors

1. When the incident ray is parallel to the principal axis, it will pass through the focal point
upon reflection.

2. When the incident ray passes through the focal point, the reflected ray will be parallel to
the principal axis.

3. When the incident ray passes through the center of curvature, it gets reflected along the
same path.

For Convex Mirrors

1. When the incident ray is parallel to the principal axis, the reflected ray should be drawn in a
way that its extension comes from the focal point.

2. When the incident ray is drawn so that its extension passes through the focal point, the
reflected ray will be parallel to the principal axis.

3. When the incident ray passes through the center of curvature, it gets reflected along the
same path.

Rules for drawing ray diagrams in lenses:

For Converging Lens

1. When the incident ray is parallel to the principal axis, it will pass through the focal point
on the opposite side upon refraction.

2. When the incident ray passes through the focal point, the refracted ray will be parallel to
the principal axis.

3. When the incident ray passes through the center of the lens, it will continue to travel along
the same path.

For Diverging Lens

1. When the incident ray is parallel to the principal axis, the refracted ray should be drawn in a
way that its extension comes from the focal point.

2. When the incident ray’s extension passes through the focal point on the opposite side, it
will refract parallel to the principal axis.

3. When the incident ray passes through the center of the lens, it will continue to travel along
the same path.
