Overview

Product description
This software is used to display SS7 signal units, call data records, transaction
records (called xDRs) in plain language for analysis and to trace causes of
malfunctions.
The decoded data is organized into three separate windows:
• First window shows the call data records in summary form.
• Second window shows the signal units associated with a call data record
(summary of signal units).
• Third window shows a full decoding of a signal unit and the corresponding
hexadecimal trace record.
The xDRs can originate from a local file or from a remote file on a Data Server
or DataWareHouse Oracle server.
Research and analysis are facilitated by filter, sort, search and layout functions
(highlighting protocol errors, displaying data by direction, providing breakdown
by level, displaying in different formats (decimal, hexadecimal, text, etc)).
Export functions are provided for a more customized analysis.
Export in text format: for a customized analysis using a spreadsheet like
Microsoft Excel  or for inclusion in a Word  document.
Export in HTML format for reports when using navigators like Internet Explorer
 or Netscape .

Other formats are provided like CSV and XML.

Thanks for choosing xDRBrowser !

Once you have logged into the portal, you’ll be forwarded to the following page:

You can check if the Network Administration Software properly recognized you
by reading your login-name on the top-right corner, near the “Logout” link.
“Configuration” allows users to configure the network system (adding/deleting a
DataServer, declaring an xDR session) by using “ System Configuration” link,
or to use applications such as “ProTraq” for statistics generation.
Under “Application” you can find user applications such as “ProPerf” and
“xDRBrowser”. To enter xDRBrowser you need to click on the xDRBrowser
logo.
Under “surveillance “ you can find applications to monitored the system like
Log Viewer and System alarms.
A «User preferences» link allows you to modify settings for display options
(here you can choose to change xDR display for Point Code, or specify another
format for Date and Time displays for all fields all over your navigation).

Reading data from Network Administration Platform

You can open a session stored on the server, or open remote sessions that are in
specific Data Servers or Oracle Servers on your network.
In the “Open” menu, the command to open a session is “Open session”.
The following sections describe how to read data from a session (see Open
session). But first, please review the general list presentation explained below
(List presentation).

List presentation
Generally, all lists will contain the same toolbar, buttons, and generic
commands. Although some might not be available in all lists, the aim of this
paragraph is to present all possible choices.

Contents UZ 1339 Ed. 2.0 9 / 39

xDRBrowser NSP

At the top of the list, the navigation bar looks like this:
You will use it to navigate through
the data records that are presented in the displayed list. The various arrows allow
you to go to the next row, next page, or to previous ones. They are brought up-
to-date (grayed or valid) live.

Click the “Add Record” button , to add a new record of the type of
displayed data. This button may not be available in all lists.

Click the “Edit” button to change the properties of the currently selected
record (highlighted and with its thumbtack pushed-in).

Click the “Delete Record” button to delete the currently selected row. The
corresponding record in the Database will also be deleted. Note: all the
information it is related to may also be deleted. Because of this feature, PLEASE
USE THIS COMMAND CAREFULLY!

Click the “Filter” button , to open a pop-up window that allows you to add
or remove selection criteria for the currently displayed list.

Click the “Export” button to open a pop-up window that allows you to
export the presently displayed list view (as HTML or XML file).

Click the “Show child” button to show/hide the detail list that might be
associated with your current view. The “Child view” corresponds to data that is
related to the currently selected record, in the master list. Clicking several times
toggles between the “Master view” (only parent records shown) and the
“Master-Detail view” (parent and child, details records shown).

The same principle applies to the “Show all child” button , which, if
available, will show or hide complete information associated with the master
record, and its details records, etc.

If you want to know the exact number of records resulting from your query,

simply click the “Count on demand” button . This operation is not done
automatically, as it can take quite a bit of time.
To change the number of configurations displayed per page, enter a new value,

at the bottom of the list, and click “Change Records Per Page” button .

To change the privacy of an object, click the “roles” button .

Open session
The “Open session” command is the default command. You will be directly
forwarded to that page after choosing the xDRBrowser application in the
Tekelec Portal.
The following list presents all the sessions available to whatever DataServers
and DataWareHouse servers you can open. The list contains one row per
available session. A session corresponds to an xDR record, signal unit capture,
or Statistics session. Signal unit capture is only available for DataServers.
To know the start date and end date you can click on “calculate period” button

Contents UZ 1339 Ed. 2.0 10 / 39

xDRBrowser NSP

. This button calculates the period for the sessions present in the current
page.
This information can be out of date, if you have a doubt click on button to
actualize them.

NOTE: You might not see all possible sessions as user privilege and rights may
restrict access.
To connect to a session on a DataServer or a DataWareHouse Server (Oracle),
just click on its name.
The next page displays all the available queries for this kind of session.
See section Filtering on data records for more information about this following
window.
If the server you are trying to access is not reachable, you might see the error
message shown in the status bar in the below figure:

If this occurs, do the following:

• Check your network-cable
• Check your network rights (or eventually contact your administrator)
• Make sure that the IP address (or name) you are trying to connect to is
accurate and accessible from the machine on which xDRBrowser is running.

Contents UZ 1339 Ed. 2.0 11 / 39

xDRBrowser NSP

• Make sure that there is a Data Server or an Oracle Server running on the
selected machine.

Filtering on data records

You will use this command to set up a filter on any opened session or MSR.
This command is available after choosing a session to open. The next page
displays all the queries available for the chosen session. You can add a new
query by clicking the add toolbar button, or you can edit an existing query by
selecting one and clicking the edit toolbar button.
The filter can be set up according to period; according to one specific value of
the fields available in the session that is about to be opened; or by selecting the
required fields.

When you open a session, and next when you edit or create a query from the
Queries list page, the above pop up box appears with 3 tabs:

• Period: lets you define a range of dates for the opened data.
• Filter: lets you define the filter criteria to apply to the xDR records.
• Summary: lets you select which fields to display.

When you click the [Apply] button, the pop-up window will disappear and the
main window will be refreshed with a Wait message.
Clicking on the “Cancel” button will cancel your current selection and lead you
back to the previous page, which is generally Session selection.

xDRBrowser NSP

Period
Lets you enter a time frame for extracting the data.

When opened, the first and last datetime values of the session cannot be edited.
Note: The default values (that appear as editable values) may select a period
that does not contain any data..
You may change the begin and/or end datetime by typing new values in the
editable input fields, or by clicking on the calendar button to select another
value. The red star indicates a mandatory field.
xDRBrowser detects and signals the following errors:
• Value out of limits
• Wrong input format (not corresponding to a date according to your
presentation preferences).
• First datetime greater than last datetime.

Filter

This is an optional feature. With “Filter”, you can select an existing filter or
specify new filter criteria to be applied to the data record that will be read from
the designated session.

The content of this window is linked to the session description that is

automatically determined. There can be different descriptions for each family of
protocols.
The contents of the currently applied filter can be queried at any time when
viewing the data.

Description of columns
The first column, which is named “Index”, allows you to select the condition
corresponding to the selected letter. You can insert a new line by clicking on the
[New condition >>] button, or delete any existing one by selecting the
corresponding letter, and by pressing [Delete condition] button.
The second column, "Field", contains record field identifiers, giving the names
of the fields to which a condition is to be applied.
The third column, "Operator", contains a comparison operator, chosen from a
list of all the possible types of operators. An operator must be selected for the
condition to be valid. The operators are:
• < strictly less than

Contents UZ 1339 Ed. 2.0 14 / 39

xDRBrowser NSP

• <= less than or equal to

• = equal to
• >= greater than or equal to
• > strictly greater than
• <> different from
The fourth column contains a value used for comparison. It is entitled "Value"
and may show the possible values according to the choices made in the Field
column. The input format depends on the column type. It may be a text, a date, a
signaling point or a numeric value as appropriate.
The value must be consistent with the type of the corresponding field. For
enumeration fields, you can enter the numeric value instead of the
corresponding label for this field (if Translate Values option has been
checked in Enumeration preference). You may enter this value in
hexadecimal by adding the letter "h" after the digits.

In a "Value" cell, you can enter any value. When the field type allows it
(enumeration, Boolean or small numeric interval), the list under the text box can
be used to enter the data by a simple selection process.

With the "=" and "<>" operators, it is possible to enter a list of values, each one
separated from the next by a semi-colon ";":
• If the selected operator is an =, the filter will act with an OR combination
between each value; if the selected operator is a <>, the filter will act with a
AND combination.
• If the field is of number type, the value can contain generic characters.
Accepted characters are:
Type of replacement Generic
character
One character ?
Zero or more characters *
(only in last position)
Example: B-Number = 330900*; 330190*; 330180335201
This filter will select xDRs where B-Number will start with 330900 and xDRs
where B-Number will start with 330190 and xDRs where B-Number will be
equal to 330180335201 (that is an OR combination for B-Number, e.g. B-
Number equal to (x OR z OR y) ).

Description of Expression
The "Expression" text box is used to define the relation between the line
conditions stipulated in the form.
When you add a new condition, the new letter is added to the expression with
the default AND operator. You can change the operator for an OR operator, and
add NOT conditions.

Expression is checked but not automatically corrected.

Please note that expression is “case-sensitive”, this means that if modifying it,
you will have to respect case of “Index” letters.

Parameterized Filter
It is possible to create and save Filter parameters. To do this, put “#{your
prompt}” in the value field of the condition you want to parameterize.

When you execute the query (click [Apply]), a new tab appears. Now you can

Summary
This tab lets you choose the fields you want to display.

The choice of fields is taken from the description of the fixed fields of the xDR.
Each field has a check box. A box that is checked indicates that the information
will appear as a column in the Summary window. A box that is not checked

means that the information will not be shown. The list can be used to select one
line at a time.
The [Check all] and [Uncheck all] buttons are used to enable or disable
all the fields.
The [Move up] and [Move down] buttons are used to shift the current field
to alter the order of the columns. This entire configuration may be saved in
Database to be easily retrieved later.

The [Set as default] button allows you to save the selected columns and the order
as default for this kind of protocol. The next time you open a session that has
the same protocol, if you click the button [get default], it will retrieve the same
selected columns and the same order.

Wait message
Depending on your server power, this window may display quite frequently as
this is a Web-based application.

This message indicates that data is being read and that you should wait until this
window is refreshed.

Display windows
After choosing a session to open and a filter to execute the data of the session
are displayed in a window that can have different layout. The layout and the
signification of each display are explained below:
Any opened data can appear in several levels of detail named layout, organized
in a maximum number of three parts. The entire part showing all xDR is named
“xDR Browser”.
• Summary: xDR, data records, the view that is always shown (default).
• Details: signal units (or frames) corresponding to a data record.
• Full decoding: a full decoding of a signal unit or decoding by level.

Summary
This window shows the xDR summary. Here, displayed in columns, are some or
all of the fields that compose one xDR. Each row represents one xDR.
It is opened when applying choices under the “Query” window (see Open
session section ).

Column heading remains visible at all times when scrolling through the rows of
information.
By default, records are displayed in chronological order. They are sorted by
ends of call, which is their natural order of creation.
You can sort the data according to a specified column, in ascending or
descending order, by clicking on the “Up” and “Down” arrows that stand
next to the column title.
Lines can be selected in the table, then copied and pasted into a spreadsheet or
word processing program.
When you select a row, you can access the "xDR zoom" function used to show
the summary of the signal units. These details appear only if the “Details” view
has been previously activated (see Details section below).

A tool bar is provided above the XDR details table is used for browsing. It
contains buttons which access the functions to be applied on current selection:
• Navigation arrows: to go to next / previous record / page.
• “Find” button: to search for a particular term in that HTML page.
• “Filter” button: to add some criteria to the current selection.
• “Column selection” button: to select the way data records are represented.
• “Count” button: to know the total number of xDR that were retained by this
extraction.

Details
This window shows the signal units corresponding to a data record. Displayed
data correspond to the presently selected xDR.

The signal units (or frames) of a particular xDR are shown in tabular form. The
details in the SU frame corresponds to the XDR selected in the XDR frame. . All
signal units are arranged in chronological order (natural order of generation of
the xDRs).
The xDR view remains visible. You can navigate around both windows bearing
in mind that any change in selection of xDR will automatically update the entire
Detail window.
To display the signal units, they must be decoded. To navigate quickly
around the data records, it is recommended to temporarily close this
Details view.

The top of the window shows the full hexadecimal content of the signal unit.
As you move the selection from one line to another in the decoded data (bottom
panel), the corresponding hexadecimal representation (top panel) is
automatically selected. This visually matches the raw data to the decoded data.
The content of the signal unit is displayed with levels of detail that can be
programmed via Layers levels in Frames display menu (layer II, layer III, layer
IV and Application layers). The association between field and protocol layer is
applied at SS7 level and not at OSI level.
You can scroll through the content of each of the windows. The full decoding
window is refreshed automatically when you change xDR or signal units in the
Summary window.
You can also modify the color of each line according to its layer at protocol
level by using settings of Layers colors. A particular color (red by default) is

Layers levels
The window shown below can be accessed from the “Display” menu at any
time. It defines the display levels for each layer of the protocol analyzed in the
Protocol decoding view.
Following radio buttons options are available for each layer:

"Hide" - The fields of the layer are not displayed.

"Summary" - The longest fields are shown in columns with mnemonic titles.
For example:
H0H1=IAM
"Details" - Each field belonging to the layer is shown on one line, in four parts:
Bit mask (or eight hyphens if the field is longer than one byte), Long field name,
Numeric value of field in decimal format, Translation of the value into text, if
available. For example:
00000001 H0H1 Header code 1 IAM Initial address

Layer II: for SS7, this concerns the FSN, FIB, BSN, BIB and LI fields. The
default state for layer II is "Hide".
Layer III: this concerns the network addressing field SIO, OPC and DPC. The
default state for layer III is "Summary".
Layer IV: this concerns the fields of all TUP, ISUP, and SCCP protocol signal
units located after the header code. In summary mode, only characteristic fields
such as calling line number, called line number and NSS are displayed. The
default state is "Detail".
Application layers: concerns the content of the data fields conveyed, which can
be decoded by the highest-level protocols (TC, INAP, ISDN). In detailed mode,
all the available elements are displayed. The default state is "Summary".

Obviously this is one of the most useful tabs!

Directory
This tablets you choose which directory is used to do some types of actions. This
choice is saved for each user, and is taken into account as soon as you click
[Apply].

For example, if you choose "/tmp/export" as default directory for exporting a

file, each time you will ask for an HTML and XML Export in xDRBrowser
application, the generated files will be placed on this directory. Please note that
these settings are server settings rather than user settings. This can be changed if
desired.

Enumeration

When this option is activated (box checked), the values for some fields (called
enumeration fields) in the Summary and Details views are translated into text
according to session type.
When the option is disabled (box un-checked), only the numeric values are
displayed in the decoding windows.
The numeric mode is more compact when you want to export data to a
spreadsheet or database for subsequent reprocessing.

Point code
This tab or option determines the type of display for the signaling point code.

The display base is selected from a set of radio buttons. Default selection is
“Hexadecimal display”.
You might choose to display all Point Code fields in a plain or split format. This
setting has to be made by checking or un-checking the “Split format” box.
If you choose the split format, you might possibly also have to specify the bit
groups that will be used to separate your point code. Just keep in mind that the
sum of all bit groups must be 14 or 24.

CIC
This tab determines the display format for all CIC type fields. It is based on the
same principle as Point Code type fields, except that there is no constraint on the
sum for bit groups.

Schedule

Period

The start period field represent the begin period for the xDR, and it is relative to the launched time. For
example if you put one day for the start period that means your real begin period is :
Launche time – 24 hour.

This is the same principle for end period.

Glossary

Glossary of Terms

CIC
Circuit Information Code. This is a particular type of record field (see xDR
definition).

DPC
Destination Point Code. This is a particular type of record field (see xDR
definition).

DataServer
A DataServer is a component of the prOceSS7® system, used for storing data
(concerning traffic supervision or quality of service and originating from one or
more SS7 monitor units), and supplying the data to customer workstations or
server applications for analysis.

DataWareHouse
A DataWareHouse is an Oracle server, part of the prOceSS7® system, also used
for storing data similar to DataServers. The main difference is that the storage is
not done in real-time and that DataWareHouse servers do not store signaling
units. The main advantage of DataWareHouse servers is their large capacity,
keeping months and months of data instead of approximately a week on
medium sized DataServers.

OPC
Originating Point Code. This is a particular type of record field (see xDR
definition).

Session
This term applies to xDR sessions and signal unit capture sessions.
A session is a generic term to describe a group of xDR that have the same
characteristics (same number of fields, same type of fields, same size occupied
on disk for one xDR). The session acquires its characteristics based upon the

xDR it is composed of: a begin date-time (hour of the first xDR contained), an
end date-time (hour of the last received xDR), a certain number of xDR, a
certain type… There are as many types of sessions as there are types of xDR
existing in a prOceSS7® system.
Every session is always stored in a DataServer or in a DataWareHouse.
A session may be accessed by xDRBrowser.

SIO
Service Information Octet, comprising:
• Network indicator
• Spare
• Service indicator
This is a particular type of record field (see xDR definition).

SS7 monitor unit

Component of a prOceSS7® system probe for acquiring and initially processing
signal units from a specified number of signaling links in the network (up to
128). It takes the form of a 19" rack accommodating a controlling CPU board
and up to eight basic modules.

xDR
Any kind of Detail Records: the generic term given to the call record produced
for a telephone call, an SCCP connection or a TCAP transaction and all the SS7
or ISDN signal units concerning the call/connection/transaction. All xDR are
gathered together in a session, if they are of the same type (same number and
same type of fields composing one record). That way, several types of sessions
could exist together, and stored in a DataServer or DataWareHouse.
