Course Description

This course introduces students to topics in modern machine learning, along with applications of machine learning
to problems in engineering. Introductory topics will include an overview of classification, overfitting, cross-
validation, and dimensionality reduction. Supervised classification approaches will be covered including linear
classifiers, generative and discriminative models, non-probabilistic classification approaches, kernel methods, and
neural networks. Topics in unsupervised learning will also be covered if time permits.

Course objectives / learning outcomes

1. To gain in depth conceptual understanding of modern machine learning methods

2. To gain hands on knowledge of writing basic python-based machine learning codes for solving some
representative problems.
3. To obtain key knowledge in machine learning in preparation for graduate level research

Required Background
ECES 521 Probability and Random Variables

Course Materials

There is no single textbook selected for this course. Instead, class materials will be drawn from a variety of sources,
and the instructor will provide guidance on gathering such materials. The following are some of the books the
lectures will be based on:

• Pattern Classification,2nd Ed. Richard O. Duda, Peter E. Hart, David G. Stork, Wiley Interscience
Publication, ISBN 0-471-05669-3
• Deep Learning, Ian Goodfellow, Yoshua Bengio, Aaron Courville, The MIT Press, ISBN 9780262035613.

Additionally, each lecture will be accompanied with lecture slides, which serve as the primary resource for the
course.

Course Website and Online Materials

You will need to check the course website periodically to obtain assignments and lecture materials. We will use the
BBLearn system to deliver all information regarding the course, assignments, projects, links to online materials, and
grades as they are calculated. Your assignments are to be submitted through this system in a manner consistent with
each assignment description. However, emails should not be sent through this system, but rather directly to the
instructor at the email addresses above.

Course Grading Policy

The score will be assigned to a letter grade as indicated in the table to the right. The course letter grade will be
assigned based on the final numerical grade via the following table shown.

95 100 A
90 94 A-
87 89 B+
83 86 B
80 82 B-
77 79 C+
73 76 C
70 72 C-
65 69 D+
60 64 D
0 59 F

At my discretion, I may curve course grades up (but not down). When I do curve, I assign the highest cluster of
grades A, the next highest cluster B, and then C or lower for the remainder. It is impossible for me to answer the
question “what grade will I get” at the week 7 withdraw deadline, so please do not ask me this!

Syllabus is Subject to Substantial Revision

While I will try to follow the outline here, the syllabus is subject to potential revision throughout the quarter. Any
changes will be communicated via an updated syllabus shared online.

Disability Resources: Students requesting accommodations due to a disability at Drexel University need to request
a current Accommodations Verification Letter (AVL) in the ClockWork database before accommodations can be
made. These requests are received by Disability Resources (DR), who then issues the AVL to the appropriate
contacts. For additional information, visit the DR website at http://drexel.edu/oed/disabilityResources/overview/,
