Day 1: Capri
Took the chairlift to the top of
Monte Solaro in Anacapri and
enjoyed the views of the ocean as
well as the historical Via Krupp.

Boats are very important in

Capri, as fish is first caught by
fishermen before they prepare
Emperor Tiberius’s swimming pool - the fish to eat on the island.
now a tourist attraction - The Blue
Grotto The seafood in Capri is super
fresh! Capri has a lot of
excellent seafood pastas and
meals with various fish.

Capri: Food Diary
After enjoying a wonderful
boat tour of Capri with my
classmates (Katherine x 3, Rachel,
and Olivia), we ate at a restaurant
by the port.
I ordered a funghi e
prosciutto pizza, which was really
good, but I wish I would have
ordered fish! Capri is known for
being a luxury island, so our meal
was quite expensive. I also got a
frozen lemon slush, as the fresh
Amalfi Coast lemons are famous
and I was very thirsty.
Meals in the Italian culture
are an experience. We laughed and
talked over a 2-hour lunch.
Although the food is amazing, the
focus is on the company you share
during the meal. 3
Day 2: Amalfi
In Amalfi, we took a
walking tour of the Duomo
Di Amalfi. This Roman
Catholic Church holds the
relics of St. Andrew. It has
an outdoor courtyard,
which was beautiful. It is
located in the main square,
which contains many shops
and restaurants to entice
tourists. After exploring
the square, my friends and
I headed to lunch at a small
restaurant nearby. 4

Body Cast

Day 3: Pompeii
We visited Pompeii, the remains
of the ancient Roman village
preserved by the eruption of Mount
Vesuvius. The body casts were the
most shocking, as the people were
cast in their last positions. I enjoyed
seeing the house of Lovers, a
House of
wealthy person‘s home, as it still had Lovers
frescoes on the walls and a
romantic inscription. Afterwards, I
had mediocre pizza (not pictured) at
a pizzeria right outside the gates of
Pompeii. It was so hot outside, and
the pizza was extremely hot and
greasy, so it didn’t taste so good. 6
Conclusions
༝ Seafood (fresh from the nearby sea), traditional Italian
food (pizza, pasta), gelato, and lemons are staples of
Amalfi Coast gastronomic culture
༝ More important than the meal is the company held
during the meal - friends, conversation, laughter
༝ Piazzetta in Capri, Duomo in Amalfi = main gathering
places for ALL people (tourists, locals)
༝ Years of history preserved in old structures and
cultural traditions
○ history: churches, ruins, frescoes
○ traditions: bread alongside the meal, aperitivo

Ancient influences can still be found in modern food choices
along the Amalfi Coast. Amalfi was the most powerful
maritime republic in ancient times. The importance of
seafood in their cuisine and reliance on fisherman remains
a part of their culture today. Capri is also known for the
seafood. Combined with the Italian culture, the food is a
unique mix of tastes. The climate is also perfect for growing
lemons. As a result, fresh lemons, limoncello, lemon sorbet,
and lemon-flavored products are sold all along the Amalfi
Coast. There is an immense importance on bread to
supplement the meal. Bread was discovered to fuel the
ancient Romans, as we know now carbs give our bodies
energy.

more expensive overall, as

it is a popular tourist spot. 9
Thank you FUA &
Pietro and Salvatore
For teaching us about different Italian
cultures and foods in an interesting
hands-on way… I will never forget this
experience!
