FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS

1. Grip - The right grip in holding the racket is really important to achieve control on shots while
avoiding the chances of a wrist injury. A proper grip will allow you to play both backhand and
forehand strokes effortlessly.
 Back Hand - using a forehand grip, rotate the hand slightly so the thumb is along and parallel to
the wide side of the handle.
 Forehand - with the racket head perpendicular to the floor, shake hands with the grip so the “V”
formed by the thumb and forefinger is on the top of the handle

2. Stance - The stance is how you stand while playing badminton, both in between a rally and before the
serve. A stable and correct stance will bring a huge change in the results due to easier movement.
There are 3 types of stance:
 Attacking Stance - It is used to get into position before playing an overhead forehand stroke.
 Defensive Stance - To defend the opponent’s smash, you need to be prepared with the
defensive stance.
 Net Stance - this stance is to be ready for the opponent’s return after playing a net shot.

3. Footwork - Badminton is played on a court with limited space, and the athletes have to take care of the
same while playing. Footwork plays a huge role in helping with an effective and organized movement on
the court.
Tips for proper footwork
 Always remember the base (starting point).
 Move only 2-3 steps backward.
 Shuffle only 1 step side wards.
 Move only 2-3 steps front.

4. Serve - Service is among the most basic skill that you need to master in Badminton.

High Serve - High serve aims at the back-end corner of the opponent’s court.
Low Serve - the low serve aims to the front of the court.

5. Smash - The shot is basically to hit the shuttle powerfully towards the opponent’s body or downward on
the court. A perfectly executed smash has no defense.

 Forehand Smash - the forehand is an overhead smash which is similar to the action of throwing a ball.
 Backhand Smash - to execute this stroke, getting the backhand grip is extremely important.
 Jumping Smash - A forehand smash with a timed jump added to it counts under jumping smash.

6. Drop Shot -are delicate badminton shots that can win you points that aim at scoring points in deception.
Played with both backhand and forehand, these are used to move the opponent to the frontcourt. This
creates space in the midcourt and backcourt for you to exploit

7. Clear/ Lob - The lob shot in Badminton can be imagined as a shot with an inverted ‘U’ trajectory. It is
normally played from the forecourt with an aim to lift or ‘lob’ the shuttle over the opponent. The idea is to
land it as near to the baseline as it is, at an angle that is impossible to clear.

FUNDAMENTAL SAFETY RULES

1. Stretching - players should warm up before competing with some stretching and light cardio activity, like
running in place. Stretching limits, the risk of potential muscle pulls and strains. It also gets the ankles,
knees and other joints prepared for strenuous activity.
2. Court – a court should be situated away from pedestrians and free from any obstructions and potential
hazards such as standing water, loose gravel and random debris. There should also be ample room
around the court’s outside boundary to permit freedom of movement. If played indoors, proper lighting and
ventilation must be provided.
3. Equipment - Only legal badminton rackets and shuttlecocks should be used. Rackets that are too heavy
may generate excessive power, increasing the risk of injury from routine game play and accidental
collisions between teammates. Racket grips should be kept dry to prevent unintentionally throwing the
racket during swings. The badminton net must be properly secured to prevent collapsing, with the net
poles free from sharp edges and any tripping hazards.
4. Game Play - all official badminton rules should be followed to ensure fairness and safety. Teammates
should practice communication to avoid collisions and accidental racket strikes. At no time should the
shuttlecock be played directly at an opponent. Doing so could lead to eye injuries. Also, the number of
players per side should be limited according to the court size to prevent overcrowding.
5. Clothing - Wearing the proper footwear will help prevent ankle and knee injuries. Shoes should have
excellent support and provide adequate shock absorption. Gloves may be worn to prevent hand blisters
from holding the racket.
6. Technique - Knowing the proper way to play shots will limit the chances of suffering wrist, elbow and
shoulder injuries. Holding the racket too tightly while playing may result in elbow inflammation, which is
more commonly known as tennis elbow. Using rackets that are too light or too heavy may also contribute
to elbow inflammation.
