Diffusion Rate Experiment

1. As the cell grows larger, we can see that both the surface area and volume increases.
While both of them increase, the surface area increases at a faster rate than the
volume. However, the surface area to volume ratio decreases as the cell continues to
grow.
2. Looking at the diffusion medium, the cube that was able to diffuse the deepest was the
0.5 cube. This is due to the smaller cube having a greater surface area to volume ratio,
helping the cube diffuse throughout the volume of the cell at a quicker and more
efficient rate.
3. Through the data provided, we can see that as the cube increases the rate of diffusion
decreases because when there is less surface area and more volume, diffusion takes
much longer.
4. Throughout this experiment, I was able to control the amount of HCI used in the
beaker, the material of the cube and the time the cubes spent in the HCI.
5. While the largest cell has the largest surface area, this would affect the efficiency of
the diffusion due to its relying on the size of the surface area to be smaller. In order to
overcome this, cells can become multicellular to allow diffusion to occur more
efficiently.
6. According to the results represented in my investigation, I feel that the smallest cell
has the most beneficial characteristics. This is due to the smaller the surface area of
the cell, the more efficiently diffusion will occur.
